The 106th season of wrestling at Lehigh begins this week as the "Pride" of Hofstra (I always liked "The Flying Dutchmen") come into the famed "Snake Pit" in Grace Hall. LU will then travel to defending national champion Penn State next Sunday for a 2 p.m. match. Rec Hall at PSU already sold out. Special viewing party on Lehigh's campus through either Big Ten Network or streaming if BTN does not do it live. LU will, again, send out 9 underclassmen but very talented. Unfortunately, start 149 pounder Minotti (returning All-American) will not be ready from shoulder surgery until January, and 285 pounder Wessel out from foot surgery.

Love it. Grace was given the "Snake Pit" tag by Penn State fans back in the 1950's after the movie of the same name. Most intimidating wrestling arena in the country when full and the fans stomping on the bleachers.

I'm well aware of the Snake Pit's reputation, haha. I dunno about most intimidating though; the "Thunderdome" at VMI was rocking, although with significantly fewer people. Jenison at Michigan State was pretty f---ing crazy. Bull Halsey for Navy had decent crowds, but they're too far away from the mats to intimidate much. For my money, Iowa is the most intimidating. You just walk in with all that history and Gable on the other side knowing **** is going to end badly, haha.

Lehigh opened season tonight with a 27-9 victory over Hofstra. Mountain Hawks won 8 of 10 bouts, though most were fairly competitive. The Pride's Ruggiello scored a nice fall over freshman Drew Longo, but Nate Brown for Lehigh was masterful in scoring a Tech Fall in just 3:30, 17-2 with four near falls. Bolich at 197, who is usually one of those 'close to vest' types, opened it up with a 12-0 decision.
Lehigh now travels to a sold out Rec Hall at #5 Penn State at 2 p.m. Will be available on internet at BTN2GO. Mountain Hawks entered the season preseason ranked #15, but will be without starters Minotti (A/A last year) and Wessel at 285, an NCAA qualifier. With both in the lineup, I would pick the Hawks to possibly split the ten bouts, but now that would be a stretch.
