While I'm all for defensive backs getting more recognition, I think this is the type of guy who could just not pan out at the next level. Frankly, if he didn't have 8 picks last year very few people outside of the A10 would know about him. Unfortunately being a d-back, teams will certainly not throw to his area as much in the future and even though he may be better this year than last, he could easily see the INT number go down and, as the Buchanan type awards are all stat based, he doesn't have very much of a chance of winning that award. UMass's poor run defense doesn't bode well for more chances at picks as well as some teams are just going to run as often as possible.

For the pro level, while he's a very good IAA player, where's he going to play in the NFL? You have him listed here at 5'10" 196 lbs - on the other thread you have him at 5'9" 206 pounds - either way, he's really short and not particularly big. Right now he's playing safety for UMass, which gives him a lot of freedom not to play straight cover as a cornerback - while he's fast, can he cover man-to-man on top receivers even at this level, let alone the NFL? If he can't cover in the NFL (which size-wise he's fine) is there anyway he could play safety at the next level? Just taking a look at the Eagles for instance, Brian Dawkins is 6'0" 210 and Michael Lewis is 6'1" 222 - seeing how college measurements always end up a bit smaller than NFL measurements, James is already too small to play safety in the NFL. Does anybody really know how well this guy can cover man-to-man?

this bio was from Umass, the other size is his actual size... he will move to CB... he is just like Nick Collins... some said the same thing about him this past year... he went 2nd round...james is this year's version of collins.

Isn't Collins a little bigger? He's listed as 5'11" and 206 lbs - besides, wasn't this one of the more suspect picks in the draft? A lot of services had Collins going second day at the earliest, not second round. Plus there were a lot of questions on how well he can make the transition from safety to a true corner. Sure, James could be a reach at a similar spot, but I'm not sure Collins is the best model to follow here.

Collins is one of those who will be like James. Both are gonna be 2-4 year projects but expect them both to play in the NFL.

I do think the transition will be a little hard but James is a much better player than Collins so I could see him 2nd round or 3rd round. I think Collins was a reach. I had him 4th-5th round on my final board.
