As was first reported by Inside Carolina at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Butch Davis has signed a contract to become the next head coach at North Carolina.
Inside Carolina received reports from several sources that a contract has been signed with Davis, though a formal announcement had not been scheduled and UNC has not given official confirmation.
Sources indicate that a formal announcement could be delayed until after homecoming week, as there are conflicts being worked out regarding the timing of the announcement.
The 54-year-old Davis returned the University of Miami to national prominence during his tenure. Taking over a program under heavy NCAA sanctions, Davis posted a 51-20 record with the Hurricanes from 1995-2000.
After an 11-1 record and a No. 2 national ranking in his sixth season at Miami, he chose to take the head job with the NFL's Cleveland Browns. Davis resigned during his fourth season in Cleveland, after compiling a 24-35 record.
