Phillies Make Push for Soriano

Apparently, the Phillies are very interested in trying to sign Alfonso Soriano as a big bat to put behind Howard in the order. I think this would be a great acquisition of the Phils. Any thoughts?

I'd take Soriano in a heart beat - not only would it give you a big bat to put in the lineup around Howard, but it would also coincide with the official end of Pat Burrell's Phillies career - I couldn't make this acquisition fast enough if I were Gillick. In the Phillies tiny ballpark Soriano could hit behind Howard in the order and hit 50 HR's himself. The question is whether you would park him behind Howard (bat Howard 3rd and Soriano 4th) or put him ahead of Howard. With Soriano able to steal some bases, I put him behind Howard.

Do the Phils have the money for Soriano though? I'm pretty the Nat's don't...I'm sure they're hoping that he'll lower his asking price so they can sign him. Sigh...it was fun to have him around for a year. Now the only player remotely exciting to watch on the Nat's roster will be Ryan Zimmerman.

They moved a lot of money out of the way by getting rid of Abreu and getting rid of Burrell will save them some money even though they'll probably need to pay a portion of his salary next year even if he plays somewhere else. They also should get savings from Wolf's and Leiberthal's contracts which are up - they could still be Phillies but it'll be at a reduced price. They should have the money.

As long as he doesn't go to the Yankees or Red Sox (since I'm also an O's fan), then he has my full support to go to Philly! The Nat's aren't going to be contenders for a while...so they might as well spend that kind of money on developing players over the next few years. :twocents:

Burrell has a no trade clause so I'm hoping Gulick has gotten indications Burrell will waive or that some team Burrell is interested in has stepped forward. Phils are trying to sign Wolf as the #5 starter. Definitely needs a pay cut--with incentives.

My thoughts exactly...I'd definitely bat him behind Howard...it was obvious this year that someone capable needs to bat behind him...
