Is upon us!

Tough one to judge, with both teams being Wild Cards and rolling through their respective league series.

My heart says the Royals, my brain says the Giants.

Who you got?

I want the Royals to win. Not looking good for Game 1, but hopeful that they'll bounce back.

Bumgardner is a horse out there. Royals are going to have to find a way to beat him to win the series.

They said the same thing about the Yankees needing to find a way to beat Cliff Lee in 2009. Lee went 2-0, but the Yankees went 4-0 against the rest of the team. xbawlingx

I'm afraid that the Giants starting pitching is just a little better than the Royals, even beyond Bumgardner. Both bullpens are strong. Hopefully the Royals bounce back tonight.

The Giants' bullpen melted down in the 6th inning... the Royals took advantage of it and won...

That sixth inning was a beautiful thing to behold. Side note: I hate watching Jake Peavy pitch, and that has nothing to do with wanting the Royals to win. I don't care who he is pitching for or against, he's too damn slow. There's been a lot of talk about going to a "game clock" of sorts where a pitcher will get somewhere between 12-20 seconds where they have to throw the next pitch before the clock hits zero. He is definitely one that needs it. He can make a game almost unwatchable due to his pace.

Giants relief pitcher Strickland turned full a-hole after that home run.

Yeah, one of the odder moments from postseason baseball in the last few years. Strickland made a half-hearted apology after the game claiming it was a miscommunication, but watching it, I was wondering why the hell he was yelling at Perez considering he wasn't even the guy who hit the homerun off his *****ty pitch. I mean, on the list of guys you should be mad at, the guy standing on second base when you toss a lollipop across the plate that gets deposited in the cheap seats isn't anywhere near the top. He was just waiting there to congratulate Infante on his first post-season homerun and give him a high five and a little slap ass. Same thing the Giants would have done in that situation, Perez wasn't showing anyone up. Emotions are good in sports at times, but not when they cause you to lose focus.

As a Red Sox fan, watching Peavy pitch for nearly a year, I never thought he was slow between pitches. Then again, I have gotten use to Clay Buchholz and his horrendous 30+ second wait in between pitches. So in comparison Peavy just appears faster.

Buchholz & No-mah on the same team would have been 4 hour games.

I've determined that my dream is to have as much money as the Marlins fan. Those tickets have to be expensive especially since he probably doesn't get them at face value.

I want the Royals and I believe if they play good defense and limit mistakes they will win this series in 6 games against anyone the Giants roll out there to pitch against them. Giants are solid and have been there before but there is something special about the Royals this year.

May soon be at an end. They are testing a pitch clock in the Arizona Fall League not terribly unlike the play clock in football. You get something like 20 seconds to deliver the next pitch.

Surprised I was not more familiar with Hunter Strickland, who is from just up the road. Kind of odd to see the battery for SF in the 6th inning (representing their hippy west coast fan base) be two guys from rural Georgia. Going to happen against tomorrow as another Georgian, Tim Hudson, takes the hill.

PF... You're killing me Smalls. Nothing but love for ya, but I just said that on the last page talking about how unwatchable Jake Peavy is. That's what precipitated the Bucholz comment, haha.

I got that. I just assumed you were discussing that they were unwatchable given how long they take between pitches. My only comment is that some of these guys may have to speed up their game with new rules they are currently testing. Peavy and Bucholtz may then become less unwatchable.

Royals go up 2-1!

In other baseball news, Joe Maddon opts out of his contract with Tampa Bay. He and Ron Gardenhire make two good options for teams looking for a new Manager next year. I expect on-line Tigers fans to be frothing at the bit over this one.

Dodgers, Cubs, Rangers?

He's a pretty smart guy, if he's interested in a front office job, I'd gladly take him over Ruben Amaro. I wouldn't want Maddon as the manager though simply because if Amaro is in there, I don't have confidence in them doing anything to help the guy win.

One of the front office people for the Rays recently a job with the Dodgers from what I understand. That may be in the works.

I'm hoping Hudson goes six shutout and the Royals win it late.

One of the great questions tonight is when does Bochy go to Bumgardner. Final game of the year, you know they will have him ready to go when needed.

I think the only way he comes in is if it is a tie game later in the game. No reason to risk him if you are losing the game.

KC's catcher got drilled in the leg by a pitch early in the game, and was having obvious difficulty on the basepath afterward.
I wonder if baseball has ever contemplated a type of medical re-entry clause, where if a batter is hit by a pitch or a fielder is run into by a baserunner, that player could be subbed out for an inning while being given medical attention (in this case, icing down the leg that got hit), and then could re-enter the lineup afterward.

Obviously some teams might try to take advantage of such a rule to sub in a speedier baserunner after minor HBPs, but since everyone would have the same opportunity, I don't see how it would be that big of a deal. Or make it at the umpire's discretion.

Well, there is no doubt in my mind who the MVP for the Series will be. Heck of a performance- and I wanted the Royals to win.

Agreed, surprised he didn't go for it. No one else was hitting Bum, might as well give it a shot.

Yeah. They likely would have thrown him out, but at least put the pressure on the defense to make the play. Hindsight is 20-20 though.

Great run by KC and congratulations to the Giants. Particularly Madison Bumgarner, a native of Lenoir, NC and graduate of South Caldwell High School!

Dynasty over Destiny, could have went either way. Bumgarner reminded me of Mickey Lolich, except Lolich had Game 5 & 7 complete game wins back in the day before pitch counts and relievers.

If he'd have started hard out of the box, he would have had the few steps needed to make it easy. Crawford or whoever took the relay from Perez was off balance enough that he couldn't make a dead on strong throw. He definitely should have tried it with Perez who hadn't done crap since he hot hit, especially against Bumgarner.
