CONGRATS TO UMASS!

The Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the index ranking for I-AA and top indicator of at-large playoff selection has Massachusetts in the top spot again this week. The Great West Football Conference remains the top ranked conference. I-AA's largest league, the Atlantic 10 Conference has five teams in the top 25; the Great West and the Gateway Football Conference placed four teams; the Big Sky Conference, the Ivy League and the Southern Conference placed three each; the Pioneer Football League, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference placed one each. (Games through 11/5/06)

Gonna be tough... just have to win this weekend and leave it in the hands of the committee... 10-0 would be a great number! USD slipped 3 spots in the GPI from last week.

Ralph... what is the playoff indicated field as per GPI?

I was wondering that as well.... Cal Poly didn't fall too much for losing. How do you move up and down this GPI? I honestly thought Montana might make a run for #1. I think Montana gets a 1 or 2 seed if they win out regardless of what the GPI says.

Looks like the following is indicated for a playoff field:

Autos:
UMass (A10) -1
Appy St. (SoCon) -2
Montana (BSC) -3T
YSU (GFC) -6
UT-Martin (OVC) -12
Hampton (MEAC) -25
Lehigh (PL) -39
SHSU (SLC) -41

At-Large:
JMU -3T
IlSU -6
Cal-Poly -8
UNH -9
UNI -10
PSU -11
San Diego -13
Maine -14

San Diego is right on the bubble and could be woofed, but several others ahead of them are one loss from being out (Cal-Poly, UNI, UNH, PSU). As it is, this field is relatively balanced geographically as well. The one facing a woof would really be Maine, if its hard to find a non-conference match you might see Furman take their spot. I still don't see San Diego in, but the field is wide open and anything could happen.

I just don't see the Big Sky getting 2 bids unless MSU wins @ Montana. Which conference will benefit from that?

CCU97
November 7th, 2006, 07:06 PM
I have issues with the thought process of the GPI as a way to choose the at- large bids....for one reason...Wofford is currently ranked higher than a Coastal team that beat them and has not lost since. It also has several teams that have 4 loses ahead of teams that have much better records and if truly this is used to select a playoff field...why not remove the Ivy teams and teams that aren't able to play. Just my thoughts but it seems flawed that teams from weak conferences that schedule a heck of an OOC schedule are penalized. Basically what the GPI is saying is that unless everyone in your conference is great or your conference is an AQ conference you can't get in with out going undefeated.

No way a 10-1 Montana doesn't get a top 2 seed. 23,500 fans, 4 top 25 victories, how many top 25 victories has UMass got 2 if they go 10-1. It's money man and we make big time bookoo bucks for the NCAA. Sorry UMass.

That just makes the argument that the bottom teams in the A10 are better than the bottom teams elsewere, even stronger... They only fall from where they are by loosing in conference.
