If were talking about what they did in college only and againest top competition, i have to give a nod to Kerry Joseph!

Peems
November 7th, 2006, 04:31 PM
i could agree that meyer and lulay definitely deserve to be in the conversation. meyer because of the sheer numbers he put up and lulay because of his ability to win. the bobcats were never out of game with him at the helm.

PSU was I-AA from 1978-1980, when Lomax played.

I wasn't aware of that. Did they then return to DII? Because they last became 1-AA in 1996.

You can't really say who is the best because it is all speculation and teams ran different offenses that asked different things of the position.

These are the guys I would put in the discussion: Dave Dickinson, Tracy Ham, Willie Totten, Kerry Joseph, Raymond Gross, Steve McNair, Rich Gannon, Neil Lomax, Bruce Eugene.

Those are my 9...

I always thought Brunner was very good, maybe better than Gannon. He was sure great in '79.

GreenDay17
November 7th, 2006, 04:46 PM
I think it is probably McNair although Dave Dickenson is the best I have ever personally seen - like he was born with a solid gold horseshoe.

Others to consider - Culpepper (although he finished 1A) and Jamie Martin at Weber State (one year against Montana State - 92 I think - I swear he didn't throw a single uncatchable ball in something like 45 attempts).

Greg Wyatt in the 80's was being touted by ESPN as a potential Heisman candidate before he was injured.

I believe this is incorrect with regards to 1978-1980 as Division I-AA. I absolutely know for sure in 1980 they were Division II. Speaking of which, Bobby Hebert deserves some votes. A Bobby Hebert led team in 1980 beat a Neal Lomax lead team 40-21. Although I admit Lomax was very, very good.

I always thought Brunner was very good, maybe better than Gannon. He was sure great in '79.

Eh? Sacrilege!!!!! Brunner had a great team in 1979 - Rich Gannon played at UD at a time when talent had drained at UD - the mid 80's were not great for Blue Hen football - but he single handidly made them into a respectable team. I have a DVD of the 1986 season - Gannon was a man among boys - incredibly fast and a rocket for an arm. Gannon gets my pick for best ever (although you can't ignore McNair obviously).

Phil Simms' last season, 1978, Morehead had just moved to DI-AA. Since he graduated as a IAA quarterback, I give him my vote, though largely for his pro performance rather than his college stats. I would vote McNair second and throw in Stan Humphries for 3rd. His last minute drive to defeat Marshall in the '87 championship game was something special. And he did take San Diego to a Super Bowl game too.

If the criteria is how a I-AA QB did against top competition then there is no doubt that the best I-AA QB of all time is Jack Douglas of The Citadel, 1988-92. With a 4-0 record against I-A competition i don't think anyone else is even close.

Gannon was a stud, that's why. We also only made one playoff during that entire tenure so we lost a few games as well.

Was a strange time for Blue Hen football. In 1985 the Hens were 2-0 vs I-A's (both games in Newark) but didn't even make the playoffs. One of those wins was against a Navy squad with Napoleon McCallum who was being hyped for the Heisman... until that game that is. :p

Brunner played at UD when UD was in Division II. He was a very good QB and started in the NFL but he was not really at the level of Gannon. Gannon graduated in my class (man we are getting old) and he was really something to watch. He could evade tacklers with really quick moves. I have seen few QBs at any level make plays like he could make especially running the ball.

McNair, Gannon and Warner have all won the NFL MVP award so they are all solid QBs.... Below is Gannon (on right) with Keeler and Tubby...

I think Citdog only counted the ones we one. Actually, Jack played from 1989-1992 and he was 5-1 against 1A competition.

A QB named Gene Brown qb'd in 1988 and he could play too.
