Payton, Buchanan, Rice Updates- Oct 12

Here is my updated outlook for the big three awards. I hated to do it but moved Adams down to #2 since he is hurt. Also made some moves on the Buchanan list. I will go ahead and say that the best TE in FCS is Delaware's Nick Boyle but is not on the list because his production is not quite as good. He's the most physically gifted and dominant of the TEs in FCS but Pruitt is the one getting the most catches so I have gone with him.

Montana State QB Prukop to me is a top 5 guy. I would argue he is a top 5 QB in FCS already.

Buchanan race is tough. Sage Harold is the most underrated defensive player in FCS right now. Based on the tape and the buzz among CAA coaches he is likely going to be the CAA DEF POY if he keeps this up.

Woodrum and Cohen both added to Payton list after they each turned in another big performance.

TSU CB Saunders added to my Buchanan list after a big game. He is my #1 rated CB in FCS right now. Expect him to be at the NFL Scouting Combine.

JMU CB Jimmy Moreland had yet another unbelievable game yesterday. blocked his THIRD kick of the year, plus had a pick 6. he's a very instinctive player. i seriously doubt a CB will win the JR Award, but this guy is an absolutely phenomenal athlete.

If he isn't in the top 3 on ballots right now something is seriously wrong. He's a big time talent. He almost beat Syracuse himself. Syracuse folks gush over him. They admitted to me that if they had Robertson they would only have 2 losses right now, maybe just 1 to FSU.

He's gonna have to get some picks to do that. Fair or not that is just how it is with DBs. Voters are looking for sacks and TFLs with DL, TFLs and tackles and turnovers with LBs, and picks and PBUs with DBs. If he could get 5-7 INTs then he certainly would find himself in the top 5.

He's been impressive. If he has a couple more games like this past Saturday he will certainly be in the top 5 for the Rice Award. He looks like he will be a good player. Starting to become that dominant guy that you want with someone of his size.

I'm surprised you don't have Backus in your top 5 for BB. His stats are right up there with only playing 3.5-4 games (sat out 3 second halves in blowouts and was not dressed this week). He's expected to return and be just fine when he does. He's been ridiculous and has picked up ahead of were he was last year. He's been back to back defensive player of the year in the conference the last two years and with 2 out of 6 of the weekly awards he's on track to get it again this year. I'm not challenging you and maybe it's the homer in me, but I just think he should be in your top 5. He's a game changer with the skill, size , stats and speed to make it at the next level.

I notice you have PJ Hall at #4 in your top 5 after 6 games, what do you see?

From what I see, this kid has really stepped up his game and has become a force on that D-Line. Led the defense Saturday with 11 tackles, 3 TFL and 2 pass break ups. Best part about this is he is just a redshirt freshman.

Admittedly I haven't seen the other Buchanan candidates (except for the JMU kid who was ok, not great), but having seen Don Cherry in person, he is worthy of being on the ballot right now in my opinion. He is having a great year.

Yeah, I didn't see anyone on the JMU defense stand out for me as a Buchanan-type player, but it was only one game against a good Villanova offense.

Vad Lee definitely deserves mention now. He is coming on and that no-huddle offense gets him a lot of stats. I don't think I have seen an offense that quick in person. JMU ran 90-something plays against Villanova's 70-something. Those 20 extra plays can really add to Lee's stat line. I am glad Villanova played JMU when they did. I think JMU will get even better as the season moves on.

Great List. I think Jacob Hagan will continue to move up this list if he keeps playing like he is. Was HUGE vs App. Josh Woodrum and Darrin Peterson are having breakout seasons as well.

He probably won't get the kind of mind-boggling stats that would necessitate a serious consideration for a WR to win it...too many other weapons on EWU's offense. That said, he is certainly amongst the top players in the FCS, IMO.

Also not sure about dropping Adams just because of an injury. If it's purely about stats, he could miss 4 games this season and still end up at the top statistically.

Looking at the five Big South teams going forward, Hagen probably has a good shot against CCU, Monmouth, GWU and PC to get at least 1 INT. CSU is a bit of an anomaly because Brown is a dual threat guy so he may not get as many chances in that one.

Peterson certainly has a chance being at the top of the WR stats (or near the top as I don't know what they look like after last weekend) I would reckon at least.
