CAA opposes P5 Autonomy

All 10 universities in the Colonial Athletic Association are requesting an override of the N.C.A.A. (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/national_collegiate_athletic_assn/index.html?inline=nyt-org) vote (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/08/sports/ncaafootball/ncaa-votes-to-give-greater-autonomy-to-richest-conferences.html) in August that granted substantial governing autonomy to the so-called Big 5 conferences.
But those universities are just about the only ones to do so. As of Thursday, as few as 14 nationwide had requested an override.

In addition to the C.A.A. colleges and Houston Baptist, Vermont, New Hampshire and Indiana State filed to override. All are in the Football Championship Subdivision, a tier below the Big 5 and the other five Football Bowl Subdivision conferences.


I find this pretty interesting that the only groups requesting the override are FCS schools + a few straggler non-football schools.

8 play FCS football (Del, Towson, W&M, JMU, UNH, Indiana State, Elon, Houston Baptst). 6 don't (CoC, UNC-W, Drexel, Hofstra, N'Eastern, Vermont).

Well, most schools not in P5 oppose it, they're just realistic and know the NCAA is moving forward with it in any case. This override would need like 270 schools or something so most aren't even bothering.

Most Delaware football fans are not fans of our school President - Harker at all. He's been at the helm during the downfall of UD fandom. More than 40% of UD's season ticket holders have given up their tickets in just the last 5 years or so. Fiddle, anyone?

Not quite. All 10 schools in the CAA (full conference not football) have joined the request with 4 other schools. President Harker was on the Board and was 1 of 2 to vote out of 18 against it on the Board level (with Dartmouth President) but the CAA schools as a whole are against it.

President Reveley of W&M was quoted in the article:


“If some universities want to treat their varsity athletes, for all practical purposes, as paid professional players, they ought to do it outside the embrace of the N.C.A.A.,” W. Taylor Reveley III, the president of William & Mary, a member of the C.A.A., said in an email.

He added, “It’s also O.K., every now and then, to speak up even when you realize it may amount to simply baying at the moon.”

This why the power 5 was created. The have nots trying to control what the haves want to do. Voting down everything that came along because they did not have the money to do it. Well, the big boys said to hell with y'all we are going to do it anyways. The have nots can cry and stomp their feet all they want :)
