Sam Houston State heads to Hammond, LA this week for a game against the Southeastern Lions. SHSU is coming off an emotional rivalry win against Stephen F Austin in Nacogdoches where the Kats needed a 4th and short stop late in the game to seal the deal. Unlike their previous game against Northwestern St, the running game was not the rock the offense relied on. Instead, it was the arm of Brett Hicks leading the way while the Jacks stopped the run. In order for the Kats to be successful, they'll look to re-establish their running game against the Lions.

This is a critical game for the Kats who will look to keep even, if not move ahead of McNeese in the league standings pending the Pokes results in Nacthitoches against the Demons of Northwestern St. Todd Whitten and company will look to shutdown Southeastern's pass-happy offense that was passed from Hal Mumme to Dennis Roland, who still continues to be hospitalized and is replaced while on medical leave by by Mike Lucas, a former Kats coordinator.

The Lions are coming off a tough loss to McNeese where the Lions went up 13-3 at the half only to have the Pokes blitz the Lions as Southeastern coughed up the ball while their offense struggled. The Lions rely heavily on their tailback Jay Lucas when not going through the air. Lucas has been spotty for the Lions this season and will need to put a complete 60 minutes together in order for the Lions to be successful.

Since the Lions brought back football in 2003, the Kats and Lions have battled twice. In 2004, the Kats topped the Lions in non-conference action by a count of 45-17 before the two teams played before a national audience on CSTV in 2005's game in Huntsville, where SHSU won 35-18.

The fire is back in the eyes of the Sam Houston State football team after Saturday night’s 21-17 victory over archrival Stephen F. Austin State.

The Bearkats looked like a championship caliber team by not giving up in the face of adversity when it appeared they might be on their way to a third straight loss after falling behind by two touchdowns.

A loss would have all but ended any chance SHSU had at winning a Southland Conference championship or making the playoffs.

But the guys showed a lot of heart and character and head coach Todd Whitten and his staff arguably turned in their best coaching performance in two seasons at SHSU to keep the Bearkats tied for first place with McNeese State at 3-1.

Sam Houston State’s kicking game has gotten more attention this season than any in recent memory.

The problem is, the news is all bad.

The Bearkats have missed an extra point in six of the past seven games, including four in a row on SHSU’s first score, dating back to a 37-7 victory over Nicholls State on Oct. 14.

But the Bearkats might have found the right guy for the job heading into Saturday’s big Southland Conference showdown with Southeastern Louisiana. In last week’s 21-17 victory over Stephen F. Austin, punter Curtis Parks, a place kicker in high school, was successful on his only point-after attempt of the season in the fourth quarter.

The kick was important because it forced the Lumberjacks to go for a first down on fourth and one inside the SHSU 10 with less than three minutes to go in the game. Had the Kats missed another extra point, the Lumberjacks could have tied the game with a chip-shot field goal.

Nice drive to and from Hammond to New Orleans. About 55 minutes from my place in Uptown to Hammond. A boring drive as there's absolutely nothing, but easy drive.

Talked to BW before the game. He informed me SHSU will return to Hammond in 2007 and that SHSU would host Nicholls St as part of the scheduling changes next year.

SELA had some major scoreboard/audio issues. After a few first downs, they flashed 'TOUCHDOWN' on the screen. The audio was awful and they appeared to not get it started on time. At the end of the game, you could hear Microsoft Windows shutting down over the speakers.

SHSU had a nice crowd there supporters. I sat with my fiancee across the row from exbearkat and his wife. It was pretty cold at the stadium and I was wearing shorts. Not the best move.

Tickets were ridiculous. $18 for what amounted general admission on the visitor side? Food was priced well. SELA tailgate experience is awful. There weren't many out there. Cold or not, our tailgate experience is far and beyond theirs. No SLC score updates during game. Ex and I had a nearby Kat fan that was getting NWST/McN score from his cell phone.

DD Terry looked great. Ex was telling me he thought DD had over 175 yards and I couldn't believe it. Didn't think it was that many, regardless of the fact he kept getting seven and eight yards. Amazed to find out he had 278 yards.

#36, Jeff Sparks got into the game on special teams and may have seen some defensive action. Didn't know who he was! Braylon Linnear was laying down some big time hits.

Lastly, quite a few fans wearing their outfits from the start of deer hunting season.

HAMMOND, La. (AP) -- D.D. Terry ran for three touchdowns and 278 yards on 31 carries as Sam Houston State defeated Southeastern Louisiana 28-23 on Saturday.

Sam Houston (6-4, 4-1 Southland Conference) had 286 rushing yards while Brett Hicks completed 10-of-25 passes for 113 yards and two interceptions. Brandon Perry added 40 yards on three catches.

Terry's 278 yards was the second-highest rushing yardage total in the Bearkats' history. He averaged nine yards per carry and rushed for 186 yards in the second half.

Seth Babin completed 34-of-63 passes for a career-high 325 yards and two touchdowns for Southeastern (2-9, 1-5). Crawford Kilpatrick caught 11 passes for a career-high 128 yards and a touchdown.

The oldest I-AA rivalry in the state of Texas gets underway this coming Saturday in Huntsville, TX. This rivalry has increased off the field, especially between fans of the schools, where the two schools have the most active message boards in the state of Texas. On the field, the rivalry has increased as well, especially because for the third year in a row, the SLC title is on the line, this time the Bearkats are the ones who are fighting for a share of the title, though with a McNeese loss coupled with a Bearkat win, could be looking at not only an SLC title, but the conference's auto-bid.

Last year, the Bobcats were forced to overtime against the Kats in San Marcos. A loss would've knocked the 'Cats out of the playoffs and cost them a share of the SLC title. The 'Cats prevailed in OT and overcame turnovers to not only win a share of the SLC title, but take a trip to the I-AA semifinals following a similar path as their cross-state rival from Huntsville. The Cats would lose in the I-AA semifinals to eventual runner-up UNI.

In 2004, the Kats behind QB Dustin Long took the game from the 'Cats, who were still a longshot, but still in the mix for the SLC title. The Kats would get a share of the SLC title and go to the playoffs where they'd fall in the I-AA semifinals to Montana.

Many new faces as the rivalry continues. For the Kats, DD Terry has emerged and is coming off the second-highest rushing performance in school history against Southeastern Louisiana. Terry, a Payton Award nominee has emerged as the top RB in the conference this year and brings a dynamic to a university that has lived and died by the pass in years' past.

On the Bobcat side of things, 29 seniors have left from last year's I-AA semifinalists, but there's new blood all around who are itching for their chance in the spotlight. Will Bradley George play against SHSU or Chase Wasson? George suffered an injury in practice last week and did not play against Texas Southern, but Wasson could be the player that could change the tide for the Cats. He's coming off a school record performance where he scored 24 points. Three rushing touchdowns and one recieving score for the QB, who is fast on his legs and great with his hands (as a wide reciever that is!).

A fierce rivalry on the field! A fun one off! The SLC title on the line once more, this time for SHSU!
