Disagree....MAJOR rebuild year. Not just Braun....dont forget Bjorkland....don't have the bigs to do much this year....nomad team with no home during BSA renovation. Pretty low expectations right now.

Before NDSU announced they are playing basketball there I didn't think they could play there (never heard of basketball in Scheels just hockey). I supposed the other choices would be the dome, although logistics could be tough with Bison football, or the Civic Center downtown.

I'm sure the Scheels will work just fine....the dome is too cavernous and big for bball...and I think the Civic Center would be the opposite.

I still expect NDSU to be able to win enough games to finish in the top 4 of the summit.
P.s. "and co" means and company. Which meant Taylor Braun and other departing seniors.

Blue Ribbon pre-season CAA rankings have the Tribe at the top. Not sure if I believe them, but if we put two on the 1st team it's certainly more likely.

Right now I'm planning on attending that Temple/La Salle game at the Palestra on Saturday 12/6; doing so would allow me to see both teams once this season (something I try to do with both the Owls and Explorers).
Somewhat amazingly (and very annoyingly), the Temple/La Salle game will partially overlap the St. Joe's/Villanova Holy War game being played the same afternoon. (The Owls/Explorers contest starts at 12 PM, while the Hawks and Wildcats tip off at 1 PM.) On the flip side, because SJU/VU is being played at Villanova and will be nationally televised (I forget the channel; I believe it is either NBCSN or CBSSN), I think there is a strong possibility that a potential Villanova football Round of 16 playoff game would be played at Villanova Stadium at 3:30 PM that afternoon, assuming Villanova is a top 5 seed or bids to host a Round of 16 game. Starting the game at that time could potentially encourage some VU fans to stick around after the basketball game and attend the football playoff game being played almost literally next door. (A Villanova football home playoff game on 12/6 at 3:30 PM would also make it convenient for me to attend if I'm already in Philadelphia for the Temple/La Salle basketball game; I'm crossing my fingers.)

Temple starts the season a week from tonight against a pretty good La Tech team. This is a huge year for us after coming off of the program's first 20 loss season. We've been getting good pub all offseason and most pick us to be Top 5 in the AAC. That's good enough to be back in the tourney talk....

http://www.gojacks.com/SportSelect.dbml?ATCLID=209596064&DB_LANG=C&&DB_OEM_ID=15000&SPID=7143&SPSID=88455
This year will be an interesting season for SDSU basketball, and the Summit League in general. 3 1000 pt Sr starters gone to graduation, so 10 of the 16 players have not played BB for the Jacks yet. But have an All-Summit pick in 2nd year transfer from Florida, Cody Larson (6-9, 235) back as down low threat, and two transfer guards, G. Marshall (U of Wis) and D. Parks (Iowa Lakes CC) that have Jacks fans excited for a solid run at the the Summit League crown. With ORU back in the Summit, along with Denver, it appears to be a wide-open, several loss (12-4?) race for the one auto-bid winner to come out of Sioux Falls with the Summit crown. Lots of early season jelling needed by the Rabbits, but Marshall isn't even able to play until end of 1st semester (transferred mid-year last year).

No home games for Delaware until December. ESPN did a conference preview and commented it was odd to see the defending CAA champ playing so many road games, especially so many road games against conferences perceived to be lower than the CAA. I don't see UD being very good this year, so their status as defending champs doesn't factor in very much to me, but I still think it's odd that they couldn't get a few more home games. At least one in November to get the fans warmed up.

Games of particular interest to me (no specific order):
*Fairleigh Dickinson 58 St. Joseph's 57 - Ugh. Double Ugh! It could be a long season on Hawk Hill.
*Colorado 68 Drexel 45 - are the Dragons the most snakebit college basketball team in America, AGAIN losing a starter for the year ultra-early in the season?
*Temple 40 American 37 - see Lehigh TU Owl's comment above.
*Villanova 77 Lehigh 66 - this "home" game for the Wildcats played about 5-6 miles from Lehigh's campus (the first-ever college basketball game at the new PPL Center) was close until the last few minutes.
*Lafayette 77 Robert Morris 50 - WOW, great win for the Leopards on the road against one of the preseason favorites in the NEC (still would like Andy Toole coaching at Penn though).
Games today (11/15)
*Colgate at La Salle, 3 PM - hopefully the Explorers can get off on the right foot after a disappointing 2013-2014 season.
*Delaware State at Penn, 4:30 PM - I'll be able to warm up for a couple hours between the Harvard/Penn and Albany/Villanova football games, though I'll make sure I hit the restroom at Franklin Field before heading next door to the Palestra.

Wichita State has to love the Panthers start to the season. Wichita State had very little help last year in the MVC en-route to their undefeated season. Based on the number of returning starters UNI has back and their history, I think the Panthers return to the tournament this year.
Who else is expected to be near the top of the league? Indiana State? The Sycamores were pretty good last year. Any chance the MVC could be a 3 bid league?

I couldn't believe the Crookston score. That same team was slaughtered 90-38 by Seattle Pacific and the NDSU game was an exhibition game for them. Plus, Crookston usually struggles to be top 15 in the 16 team Northern Sun conference. Amazing start for UNI. If they do become ranked, will Wichita State petition to take UNI off their schedule? Methinks they have a rule against playing ranked teams before the tournament starts. It's rare you see a big time mid-major team with such a junky non-conference schedule year after year.

Probably not since they play #25 Utah this week. I wouldn't say they play a junky schedule either. Out of those 9 non-con teams I think I counted 9 NCAA appearances from the last 2 tournaments (Memphis, SLU, NMSU all have 2, Tulsa, Detroit and Bama have 1). Last season their non-con schedule also teams with 9 tournament appearances from that same time span. Hardly what I would call junky.

This year's projected SOS for WSU (according to realtimeRPI) is 13
Last year was 98
Year before 91
Year before 52
That's top 1/3 for hardest schedules every year lately. For programs like WSU, UNI, Gonzaga, St Mary's, etc... it's tough to get good OOC games outside of MTEs. Teams don't want to come to Cedar Falls and chance losing to UNI, or go to Wichita and lose to the Shockers....or lose to them at home.
That's a problem that low-major conferences don't understand when it comes to scheduling. They can't get anyone to play them at home because it would lose them tens/hundreds of thousands of dollars. They aren't much of a threat to beat them though so they make night OOC home games.

Their next two games, @ VCU and Iowa, will tell test UNI. VCU has struggled a bit to start the year so this will be a really important game for them. Iowa has played well since stumbling out of the gate. If UNI wins those two they could be looking at a really, REALLY special year. Even 1-1 would fine....

Nothing to figure out. Although the "Engineer" moniker was due to the founder of Lehigh being the founder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad in the late 1800's that was the largest coal hauling RR in the country into the early 20th Century, the administration did 'studies" that showed too many people associated Lehigh only with its engineering curriculum and that using "Engineers" reinforced the perception. So they hired a "Madison Ave." outfit to come up with some candidates. An election was held among the student body in the mid-1990's and "Mountain Hawk" was selected. Due to Lehigh's main campus being on South Mountain, and many hawks in the area (World Famous Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is about 30 minutes west) the new mascot seemed "apropos". From a marketing standpoint, it has become an interest point for many kids (my grandkids fall into that realm) with the usual trinkets to be sold. Hard to have a 'warm and fuzzy' plush doll of an Engineer. The Mountain Hawk is named "Clutch", which carries several definitions which fit a positive image. As a player from the early 1970's, I still consider myself an "Engineer", but cheer for the Mountain Hawks. Several schools have multiple mascots and nicknames, so not a big deal.

Yes, just before the 'plebesite' on the mascot there was a time the U was pushing the "Brown & White" as an official nickname (I think a Peter Likins thing since he was a Stanford alum and they are "The Cardinal") but it never got much traction.

Idk who would think the summit is on par with the MVC. In the summit's best years and the MVC's worst the leagues are still not even.
This will also be an exceptionally bad year for the Summit, the league is way way down.
In most years NDSU SDSU UNO DU and ORU will pull the Summit to around the 12-15th best DI bball league. Never more than that, but this year we are way down.

Well..
Loyola - 10-2 RPI of 76 with an RPI forecast ~85
Creighton - 9-4 RPI of 125 with an RPI forecast ~127...and losses to powerhouses like North Texas, Tulsa, and Ole Miss...and needing double OT to beat giant slayer South Dakota by 2

Lamar Univ.; teams start clicking at different times. it's just the preseason overall so...but they should of had two more wins(Auburn & Norfolk); not sure, haven't really been following like that.

So many things here.
1. Michigan State has been great for years...what does that have to do with this season? Michigan has been in title game and elite eight the last two years. Where are they this year? Michigan State is 77th in the RPI. 6 of their 9 wins are against teams with RPI's of 200 or over. MSU shot 39% in the game and TSU shot 55%...both are extremes from their season average. The definition of lightning in a bottle
2. Kansas State had an RPI outside of the top 125 coming into today with 6 of their 7 wins coming to teams with RPI's over 200. They would not be considered a "good RPI win" for any team at this point for NCAA resume purposes. It was also a buzzer beater, so it's not like TSU dominated the game. The definition of lightning in a bottle
3. Auburn has an RPI, coming into today, of 160. 4 of their 7 wins came to RPI 250+ wins. TSU comes out on the short end of a last minute W...the definition of not catching lightning in the bottle - or "Wrong side of the bottle" as you would say.
Is it cool to beat big name teams? Sure. Kansas State and Auburn aren't good teams right now though. Michigan State isn't either, actually. By the end of the year, who knows, but it's likely MSU is the only one that will be a top 100 RPI team.
Maybe it's because you don't follow college basketball you don't get what I'm saying.
TSU likely does well in the SWAC...where the combined OOC record of all teams is 21-92 (18%) with an average score of 59-74.

1. just respond to your statement, "Michigan State and KSU were vastly overrated." since this didn't reference a timeline, it was taken in general. this season, they're just good right now.
2. yep. but it helps with a win over MSU and a point under Auburn.
3. TSU could of done something that night, but not sure how that crowd would of responded if TSU got that win...xnonox
no hate on our "don't follows". we just caught each other at different angles.
SWACbb collectively is different and TSU is a outlier with winning bigger games. no point for that go around. however, the tournaments is a third season that gives any one hopexbangx

How long until Bruce Weber is run out of Manhattan? Bill Self is the one who built the '04-'05 finalist with Brown, Head and Williams. Weber did have some respectable years following that run but recruiting really dropped off. He seems like a like a good coach to play for, maybe a little too nice. He's basically the polar opposite of Frank Martin. Gottfried at NC State comes across like Weber; good coaches that will run a clean ship, have some great moments but will leave the big dreaming fan bases wanting more...

RPI is based strongly on who you've played.
The forecasted RPI for Texas Southern isn't good because the SWAC is going to drag it down.
The reality is, RPI isn't going to matter for TSU. There is less than 0 % chance they are even remotely close to the bubble.
By the end of the season Michigan State isn't going to care about Texas Southerns RPI...nor will KSU.

This was my first trip to the XL Center and really enjoyed it. Outside of the 45/50/55/65 mph sections of Route 84 and the potholes the size of RI it was a great trip! Only two Ivies are still without an L in the Ivy standings after this weekend: Yale and Princeton.

If both of you could keep winning...that'd be awesome. Especially since Virginia Tech managed to blow a lead against #2 UVA and Northwestern has blown leads to both Ohio St and Maryland this week.
Best of luck Jacks...and Jacks.

Temple had a rough 3 game losing streak after our point guard injured his ankle when a Tulsa player was called for an intentional foul. We were up 11 in the second half on Tulsa when that happened but ultimately lost the game. After the Tulsa game, the Owls lost a heartbreaker to SMU and then proceeded to get curb stomped at Cincinnati. Thankfully, we bounced back by crushing USF last Thursday We're on our mid-season "break" right now which came at the perfect time. The week off is expected to get our PG back to 100%. Temple is 13-7 Overall, 4-3 in the AAC.....

That is stat that I never would have guessed! The MVC had a good run in the mid 2000's where they got 3 bids a few times iirc. It's amazing there wasn't a single Top 25 match-up during that time.....
Will ESPN pick this game up for a national broadcast? As a college hoops junky this is a game I'd love to attend.

So what FCS hoops teams are capable of winning at least a game in the tournament this year? Villanova, Georgetown, UNI and Dayton are the obvious answers right now.....
Ironically, two schools with dreadful football teams are having really good years. Both Davidson and Valpo could be very dangerous teams come March. The Crusaders lost a heart breaker to Green Bay so they might have to win the auto-bid. Davidson is now in the A10 so they have a great shot at an at large bid. Butler is having a good year too but the Big East is tough. I think they'll make it but their margin for error is pretty small imo at 15-6, 5-3....
All the teams above I believe can advance to the second weekend of the tournament....
SFA is in the mix too again. Their seeding will be interesting...
Rhode Island is sneaking around in the A10.....
EWU, NC Central and Murray State could be the type of 14/15 seed that steals a win.
I know the PL sucks this year. The champ is destined to be a 16 seed....

The Ivy race is a big question mark right now because Harvard has fallen on hard times since their 49-point beatdown at Virginia, and only Yale and Princeton have no losses in the Ivy race so far. Yale I think will win it all and will go to the Dance for the first time in 54 years.

That's only UNI's 4th win in the last 18 games in Carbondale (I think those are the numbers). Last season UNI was up by 17 with 1:38 left in the first half...it was 11 at half. 10 with less than 6 minutes minutes left and lost...that was the only lead change of the game. UNI lead for 39 minutes of that game.

UNI definitely made a statement at home. With Louisville and UNC getting close my attention the last 30 minutes was definitely on that game.
UNI is built to win in March. When you have experience, play defense and posses a difference maker in the post a serious run is possible.
Wichita State is not nearly as good without Early. I've seen them play a few times this year, against Utah, Alabama, GWU and UNI, and it's clear they're at a different level relative to last season.
UNI should move into the Top 15 this week. I'd have them around 11-12. Right now they're probably on the 4 line seed wise. At Indiana State on Tuesday won't be a picnic...

Can W&M finally reach the NCAA tournament? The Tribe, Northwestern and Army are the most notable teams never to go dancing.
I don't understand why the CAA is so bad. They lost some good programs obviously but there's still schools with resources. C of C should be much, much better than they are. Likewise with Delaware. Even Towson has a nice, new arena and great talent in their backyard.
I'm not sure how much longer Bruiser gets at Drexel. He had them on the cusp 5-6 years ago but the Dragons have really fallen off....

Eliminating conference tournaments is one answer to ending some of these schools' futility. March Madness should only belong in the NCAA Tournament, NOT in conference tournaments. Northwestern is a different story altogether, akin to the Cubs' postseason struggles.
Disclaimer: Two of my teams (Harvard and Chicago) are in conferences which do not play postseason conference tournaments in basketball, and are also the only basketball conferences that do not have conference tournaments for the sport in the entire NCAA. (The Ivy League and the UAA have similar structures, though the UAA is multi-regional and its football champion was eligible for the Road to Salem, provided its SOS and record were both high for at-large consideration.)

See Green Bay 2013, UC Irvine (several years), Boston U 2014. They lost in their conference tournaments, and then all were plastered in the NIT. I do not like the most deserving of regular season conference champions losing focus in the conference tournaments. I prefer confining the conference tournaments to the major conferences only. xtwocentsx

You're league champion worked their ass off and proved their worthiness over 14-18 conference games.
Last season NDSU won the regular season title by 2 full games, and from what I can tell probably did so with at least 1 full week of games left...maybe 2. Let's say IPFW found a way to pull that title game off ....remember it took NDSU winning the second half by 8 points and they were losing at the last media TO...hell with 1:21 to go in the game they were still losing...
Would you still be okay with the excitement that is championship week? Remember that NDSU would not have gotten into the NCAA tournament....and not a single one of you better actually believe they would have....That means no NCAA games, just NIT. That means no OT upset of Oklahoma.
You'd be okay with giving that up because "championship week"

Yeah, I would.
It would no doubt suck for my team if they dominated the regular season but then lost in the conference tournament final and were subsequently left out of the big dance but, like I said, championship week is about more than my team's conference. I enjoy watching the small conference finals from all around the country. Even if it's only the championship game on ESPN or ESPN2 that's exposure those conferences will never get in a regular season game. It's fun to see teams have to play one game with everything on the line, that's also what's great about the NCAA tournament. Championship week is just an extension of March Madness. To be honest on a Tuesday night I'd rather watch the MAAC final between Iona and Rider than watch an ACC opening round game between Florida St and Wake Forest even though I know those mediocre ACC teams are probably much better than the teams in the MAAC final.

I'm on both sides of the fence, I've seen 8 seeds win a conference tourney that had no business being in the tournament. But without a conference tourney, I wouldn't have been able to see Southern win a tourney game waaaayyyyy back in '93 (won SWAC as a 3 seed).

I hate conference tournaments for the reasons specified in the UAA/Ivy post and in the "NIT undeserving" post as well. Notice that the UAA and the NESCAC (and some other conferences I am not quite familiar with) send as many teams in the D-III Big Dance as the major conferences do in D-I. Out of the eight UAA teams, 2 or even 3 teams go dancing. (Unfortunately, Chicago isn't one of the two or three most years.)
As for "championship week" in basketball, I am not a fan of such conferences having that kind in their selection for their Big Dance bid. In most cases, it's usually not the top 2 seeds or teams playing for the Dance bid in the conference, and I'm not happy with it at all.
The Ivy Presidents have tried putting up the idea of a postseason conference tournament in basketball but that was defeated some years back.
