The Bison moved into the championship game on Sunday when they defeated Lehigh on penalty kicks. The game was called a tie 1-1, but rather than play overtime, they proceeded with penalty kicks, with BU having a 4-1 advantage. Lafayette beat Colgate in the afternoon game, as expected. Almost 1,000 people in the stands at Ulrich last night.
Anyone know why they would use penalty kicks and not play an overtime period? I could see it if they played OT and no one scored, but especially in the championship playoffs, one would think at least some kind of OT would be a better way to determine the winner than leaving it up to individuals. Hockey has an OT before they go to the shootout.
A number of people think the Mountain Hawks still have a decent shot at an at-large bid based on their 15-1-2 record and being among the national leaders in a number of categories.
One thing about soccer--with such low scoring, there is little room for error without impacting the final outcome.

Lehigh was the #8 team in the country coming in. On bigsoccer.com's message board, they are calling Lehigh a lock for the playoffs.

Of course, we all know how smart people on message boards are ;)

There wasn't OT before the kicks? Strange. I figured they did it like international soccer, 30 minutes of OT than the PKs...here's to a Lafayette win tomorrow, and a meeting with the Mountain Hawks in the Final Four...we can dream, right?

There was 20 minutes of OT (two 10-minute segments, just as they play in the regular season) and nobody scored. I don't know where this notion of "no overtime" came from . .

Lafayette knocked out Lehigh in penalty kicks in the semifinals after a scoreless regulation and overtime last season. A tough way to go.

Just going on what I saw in the paper. I didn't see an overtime period in the line score, and the article didn't say anything about a scoreless overtime. Maybe since nothing happened the reporter figured there was nothing to mention. I hope Lafayette wins tomorrow. Would be a shame to have a .500 team getting the autobid.

yeah they botch that kind of stuff all the time, you wouldn't think it was that hard

the Morning Call story on the Lafayette game had the end of the Lehigh game in it, at least online . . :bang:

Bison and Leopards finished regulation and OT in a 0-0 tie. BU won on the fourth penalty kick, 4-3. BU gets first autobid ever to NCAA despite 8-7-2 record. Lehigh finds out this afternoon as to whether get an at-large bid. Second year in a row Lafayette loses in final on penalty kicks.
I know the game has to end, but deciding a game in this fashion leaves me cold...
