I know that Mr. C. and Ralph have a vote in the awards. What do you two think right now?

He was one of many guys I thought about. If he keeps up what he did Saturday he should get on the final list.

I don't think any RB has passed his performance against the Univ of Texas to date...xsmileyclapx

The fact the team has taken a few losses is a big reason for keeping him off. He was also not racking up numbers like this early on. I do think he is stepping it up at the right time and I am sure Matt is looking hard at him.

I think Ball is a top 5 player but he is not putting up numbers like he has before. I dropped him but I still think he gets drafted high and should be 1st team All-Atlantic 10 at the very least!

I've been a little surprised that Goloboski from Richmond isn't on the Buchanan list. I'm too lazy to look up his stats (I think he's 2nd or 3rd in the A10 in tackles) but on the field he's seemingly everywhere and seems to get respect from all the opposing coaches & fans. Does the list get revised again this year or is the current version the final one?

smallcollegefbfan
October 30th, 2006, 10:53 PM
The list will be revised Wednesday officially and then one more time. I think he should get on in place of Ihedigbo but I don't see him coming off. UMASS has been on a tear so unless he plays bad he won't come off.

I think your DL will get on the preseason list next year. Logan is a stud too.

It is tough to pick just 16. I think if you were picking the top 20 he would have to be on the list.

Mason is the favorite right now as far as I'm concerned. His numbers are absolutely eye-popping, and he's doing that in the Gateway. He's been over 200 yards rushing at least a couple times this year, hasn't he?

I took him off to put Jordan of JMU on. I think his team success might take him off the list. It was very tough to project that he comes off.

I am just projecting what I think it will be tomorrow for discussion. He is still a heck of a player regardless if he stays on or not.

Not being a homer buy I agree with you UMass.
Almost 300 yds once also. Did not play against Penn St (sore hammy)
"IF" Mason's numbers keep up like they've been so far and he gets a good playoff run he'll get some votes :) Just think he's been pulled from the games early on several occations so our other SR TB can get rep's.

It would be shocking to see anyone other than Ricky Santos win the Payton Award. Mason isn't anywhere close to a favorite, even though he does have strong numbers. So do a lot of other backs. The Buchanan, meanwhile, is wide-open. I've seen Zac DeOssie of Brown a couple of times this year and he is having a monster season. Murrell, Siskowic, Shotwell are all good picks from great defenses.

Is Santos hurt? Last game numbers seem to indicate that. One thing I don't like about these awards is: The best Numbers and impressive stats don't always get it done. Friggen popularity contest :nonono2:

He wasnt putting up numbers early on because he was not playing due to an early injury. Has started every game since UT.

I thought this award was for an individual not a team?

Last week in torrential rain and winds, Santos was not in a position to throw. Look at the URI/Maine and UMass/Northeastern games in the same wonderful weather (it is called a Nor'easter up there isn't it?). This weekend UNH will go back to the passing game. UMass DB's will need some serious push and contain from the guys up front to avoid trouble. The key will be what the UMass will do with a smash-mouth O approach with Baylark to keep Santos off the field. If UMass can get a couple of turnovers by the D they have a chance if the offense is grinding away. On D will UMass mix zone and man when they blitz? Should be a great game!!!

Wow, no Jason Perry from YSU?

He wasnt putting up numbers early on because he was not playing due to an early injury. Has started every game since UT.

I thought this award was for an individual not a team?

Well believe or not many players get on due to team success as well. Many voters are going to look and see if you got 100 tackles for a horrible defense and would be willing to put a player higher who has 85 tackles on a top 10 defense.

It is not a team award but your team success has some effect on it.

Wow, no Jason Perry from YSU?

I wanted to put him but who do you take off? The list is pretty impressive right now. There are not really any players who anyone will say is overrated. I actually believe John Mohring of GSU will stay on instead of Jones of SEMO going on the list.

Yes Mr C you are so right on Santos, and unfortunately it is not purely for talent. It would be shocking to see anyone from the Gateway or Central region win. There has never been a GFC winner of the Payton, and I think Tony Romo (the only NCAA central region winner) must have a mistake a few years back. I guess the midwest does not play football? :)

Think about it. That is the I-AA equivelant of saying that noone from the Big-10, half of the Big-12, and half of the SEC is capable. This is despite the fact that the GFC has 4 title game appearances, and 9 semi-final appearances in the last 10-years. I realize that the GFC is adefense-oriented conference, and I am not saying that Mason or Rembert is the one...I am saying that there are no more excuses: it is "time to take a look guys".

Actually Codera Jackson would be on the just missed list. Perry plays special teams and has scored 2 TD's on defense. He's made key plays in my games. I would switch Perry and Jackson around.

You're probably right--though I wonder if UNH's having come back down to earth opens up the Payton race, even if just a little bit . . .

Most people think that those awards are affected by the playoffs. They are voted on before any playoffs games are played. The awards are just not announced until the week of the title game. The only thing known about the playoffs when votes are cast are who is in the playoffs. That might affect the awards some but the play on the field during the playoffs is not factored in at all.

I also will be completely suprised if Richmond's Adam Goloboski is not on the list. He has averaged 10 tackles per game over 4 years and several opposing coaches have annointed him as the best defensive player in the A10 this season.

All this talk is not going to matter anyway. Ball from New Hampshire will win the Payton because he broke Rice's record. East Coast voters will want it that way.

Funny, Terry has a better yd per carry avg than every RB on the list except one. The kid at C. Conn. St has incredible stats.

Voters would be believers if they saw him in action.

The trouble with I-AA is that most voters do not see all the players because not all the games are on TV. In I-A every voter sees either the whole game or the highlights of the game each week. In I-AA voters are lucky to see more than 3 games of a school the whole year and in many cases do not see the school at all unless they live in that region.

Mason of YSU has an identical ypc average (which for some reason is not listed), plus nearly 400 more yards rushing and seven more touchdowns.

Funny, Terry has a better yd per carry avg than every RB on the list except one. The kid at C. Conn. St has incredible stats.

Voters would be believers if they saw him in action.

The stats tell the story:
1 Justise Hairston, Central Conn. St. 9 Games 218 Carries 1462 yards 15 Touchdown's 6.71ypc 162.44ypg.

2 Marcus Mason, Youngstown St. 8 Games 199 Carries 1247 yards 17 Touchdown's 6.27ypc 155.88ypg.

Mason was back about 60-70 yards in this race about 2 weeks ago..... now he is just 7 yards per game away from overtaking this guy... Mason is on a playoff team as well....... In 2 weeks; Mason will overtake Hairston.. Those 64 yards for Hairston on Saturday did not help his cause......

GO MASON!

No arguement from me on Hairston. However, Terry has only played 7 games...

RB D.D. Terry, Sam Houston State, Sr.- 140 carries, 877 yards, 10 TDs, 6.3ave, 125.3 yards per game, 14 catches, 122 yards in 7 games.

(37 carries, 253 yds, 2 tds, 6.8 ypc last week vs McNeese St)

I think Payton is much more up in the air after we proved Santos is human...Though admittedly his WR's did drop a lot of passes...we gave him his first INT and just generally proved he's not the perfect QB everyone thought he was at the start of the season. As for Buchanan...Akeem is at the top of the list in my view...he's been amazing this year along with the rest of the JMU D.

I can firmly say that if I voted I would have Jordan in my top 3.

Does anyone here besides Mr. C get a vote in the Buchanan and Payton races?

I think SmallCollegeFootballFan added them on his thread as well, but again, great to see him on there! He's had an awesome season so far:

Akeem Jordan, James Madison, Sr.

5.5 sacks
1 INT
3 PBU
1 QBH
1 FR
1 FF

in 8 games. Leading tackler in the A-10, ranked 5th in the nation, also 5th in TFL.

Hmm...the Towson Tigers are 6-2...

Sean Schaefer: 183-263 for 2213 yards,69.6% completion ratio, 14 TD's, 4 INTs, QB rating of 154.78

And this is all with missing a game due to illness.

Wow, no Jason Perry from YSU?

Of course Justin Rascati has dropped off the Payton watch list, still he has only 6 INT thru 8 games, not 8 as posted.
