I realize that Appalachian news has little resonance here anymore, and really shouldn't. Thought folks might find this interesting though. From the Watauga Democrat.

Charlie Cobb, who served as Appalachian State University’s director of athletics since 2005, resigned on Thursday to accept the same position at Georgia State University, according to a news release from ASU.

“It is with mixed emotions that I accept the resignation of athletic director Charlie Cobb who has accepted the position of director of athletics for Georgia State University beginning this fall,” Appalachian State Chancellor Dr. Sheri N. Everts said. “While I wish Charlie the best in his new endeavor, his leadership and collegiality will be missed at Appalachian.”

Georgia State > Appalachian State? xlolx

Has to be about money and/or a preference for city living vs. mountains.

Maybe both. In all honesty though, if I remove my black and gold glasses I think he probably made the right move. I don't think he could be much more marketable than he is now, unless App reaches a Bowl game in the next year or two. The risk of staying is the possibility of a run of mediocrity (or worse) over the next few seasons. I'm not in the camp that thinks the 30,000 seat stadium will stay sold out without success on the field. It won't look good if we revert to 15,000 fans a game like the years before 2005. I hope I'm wrong. But I remember that even in 2008, when it became evident that Richmond was going to knock us out of the playoffs, fans were streaming out of the stadium in the 3rd quarter. I think the buzz of the new conference will make for good attendance for a couple of seasons. Beyond that I think the product better be there.

Georgia State is in an arguably higher profile conference and a major media market. The football team can only get better. He's 45 and probably down to his last 2 or 3 jobs. When Georgia State does improve, he can take credit for the improvement and possibly get a higher profile position.

What I do find ironic is that the AD and Chancellor who orchestrated some fairly controversial changes have both left prior to the changes taking effect.

Maybe he'll be able to guide them to a successful transition to FBS football!

Aren't you guys in the same conference?

Georgia State will be a challenging job. GaSt is at best the 5th or 6th most popular FBS program in Atlanta (behind UGA, GT, Auburn, Alabama, you could possibly add South Carolina and Tennessee - let's face it thousands of college graduates from the southeast stream to Atlanta seeking fame and fortune. A few of them actually find jobs.).

He job will be to somehow make basketball in the Sunbelt meaningful, and even more difficult, to generate interest for a football team playing in front of tens of thousands of empty seats in a NFL stadium - it will be a while before GaSt's proposed football stadium gets built.

My bad. xembarrassedx Somehow I was thinking they were transitioning to Conference USA in the next year or two. I'm using early morning as my excuse. :) That or I'm an idiot, take your pick. Obviously I haven't mentally bought into this change completely yet.

On the bright side, maybe Cobb can guide Georgia State to the FBS sometime soon.

Challenging yes, but when you start at the bottom there's nowhere to go but up. If they even get to being a mediocre football school, and get a stadium built, he may be able to leverage that to a higher profile job.

As far as basketball goes, App never smelled the NCAA Tournament during his tenure. Although I do think his hiring Jim Fox was potentially a great move.

I wish him well, but am not particularly sad to see him go.

Not only that. This isn't FCS Discussion and of all people I'd expect LFN to know this.xlolx

C'mon man, don't make busy work for me, I got enough to do.

A lot going on for GSU, though. As I understand it, they are purchasing the site which now houses Turner Field and expect to expand their athletic facilities.

Pretty impressive plan, in fact.

I'd be curious to know the ranking of what colleges have the most living alumni in the Atlanta metro area. I'd think GA St would be up there near the top, given the size of their student body.

They have a lot of alumni, but not a long athletic tradition. I suspect a lot of their alumni are Dawg fans.

Right, but human nature dictates that if GSU were in the lime light that you'd have "fans" come out of the woodwork. Having a large alumni base in Atlanta helps facilitate that.

But it's silly to say that GSU can't carve out a niche, given the sheer numbers in the ATL metro and the number of GA St alumni.
