Yup. Now, there may be some sort of rules that some conferences have passed regarding this, but so far the Big Sky at least hasn't passed anything. It's really not a big deal. Teams with green uniforms play on green fields all the time.

Yeah, this all came from nobody being able to beat Boise State at home, so they all blamed it on the field color. When that was laughed at, they blamed it on the uni/field combination. From that, the conference banned Boise State from wearing all blue at home. Honestly, I wonder how much of this is driven by ESPN. I remember watching them host a big game at the beginning of the season one year on ESPN. After a couple of series of having lines of scrimmage and lines to gain marked through the entire team, ESPN gave up on their stupid artificial lines marking every stat in the book routine. I loved it, but the announcers didn't know how to call a game without a yellow line telling them where the first down was, or when a team was in field goal range.

That's true. UCA's deep dark purple almost looks light purple to pink on TV. In reality its pretty dark in color. Don't know why it doesn't translate though. But you can see it in some photos.

True. There is not much worse than watching an EWU game on TV. I respect em' doing what they did and all and it seems to have been working well enough as far as publicity but I just can't watch most broadcasts of EWU at home because some crews have real trouble bringing a decent picture.
But as far as CCU goes...it's just beyond hack now so congrats on that I guess.

This.
I get it might not look as hideous in person as it does on TV, but I can not watch a game at EWU on TV. I've tried every game I can find on ESPN3, ESPN2, ESPNU and I just can't do it. The only game I've been able to watch on it was the NDSU game in 2010 because the snow covered it.
I tried watching a UCA game last season but I couldn't do it.
Boise State's blue isn't as bad as those. Darker blue, by nature, isn't as harsh on the eyes as 2 tone stripe and bright red.
Verdict to be determined on EMU's grey.
I can't decide what I think of teal yet, as it's closeish to a green...still will probably suck.

The worst thing about EWU is the camera angles down on a red on red thing. When they have field level sots it's way better. I've talked to kalm before about this and told him that this works completely the opposite of what you'd want it to. It does nothing to hide or deceive the players on the field but it really makes an audience member want to say "screw it!".

Um...ok. But remember the fans had no say in what the field would ultimately look like. I'd prefer dark green traditional but I didn't put enough funds in it to override all those voting for it. Its what we have so we'll make the best of it until it wears down and needs replacing.

Teal could work...could...
Like UNIFanSince1983 said it could easily turn out just like the old school astroturf. While not the best color in the world, it's certainly better than red, grey, blue, grey and purple, etc...
Now, if it turns out to be the color that they likely want it to be then...well....still better than the others I guess.

I'm not a big fan of alternate field colors either, but I think the teal will come out lighter than the pic (at least I hope so), and if so, then it won't be that far off from a 'normal' green. I'm actually pretty surprised Moglia agreed to this, if he even had a say in the matter.

It might have been one thing, waaaaay back when Boise's blue turf was novel. At that time, you might've had a decent intellectual property argument .... to protect against other schools using BLUE turfs.
But controlling all colors of non-green artificial turfs? It takes some nerve to make such a patently absurd claim in the first place, and then to actually propagate such a myth through fake licenses? Jerks.
I really hope a school tells them off soon.

I would like to. We had a little debate on our board and some are in favor of waiting until we sell out every game for a few years until expanding. But I think we should have the capacity to be prepared for the hopeful increased demand. A few thousand seats at a time, even if just to fill in the horseshoe on the first level before tackling the second level. There was also some talk of suites on the west side (we are looking at the east side in the picture you quoted) so we'll just have to see. I imagine it has to be something being discussed.

When I saw the picture above, my first thought was that it looked like Tenn Tech's field (color wise) the last time we went up there in 2006 (which, at the time, as still on rock hard original astro turf...it was horrible). I assume the color you guys will be going with is more like the color in the band uniforms...either way, that is such a light shade from green that it really won't be as distracting as EWU, or Boise, or UCA.

December 14th, 2014, 04:14 PM
Here is a scientific explanation.. See how green is in the middle. Purple and red are the worst. That's why the UCA and EWU fields are a terrible idea. Teal even though ugly will be mostly fine.
A range of wavelengths of light stimulates each of these receptor types to varying degrees. Yellowish-green light, for example, stimulates both L and M cones equally strongly, but only stimulates S-cones weakly. Red light, on the other hand, stimulates L cones much more than M cones, and S cones hardly at all; blue-green light stimulates M cones more than L cones, and S cones a bit more strongly, and is also the peak stimulant for rod cells; andblue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue) light stimulates S cones more strongly than red or green light, but L and M cones more weakly. The brain combines the information from each type of receptor to give rise to different perceptions of different wavelengths of light.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_vision#Theories_of_color_vision
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c0/Eyesensitivity.svg/669px-Eyesensitivity.svg.png
Also the human eye can see more than 1 million colors..A huge portion of that is green.

Boise St not only owns the color but all of the rights to colored turf. Believe it or not you've got to get permission from them before ordering and installing any non-natural color turf. They don't charge anything for the right to use colored turf and there are only a few instances of them turning down a request when the colors were too close to their own school colors.

Boise St not only owns the color but all of the rights to colored turf. Believe it or not you've got to get permission from them before ordering and installing any non-natural color turf. They don't charge anything for the right to use colored turf and there are only a few instances of them turning down a request when the colors were too close to their own school colors.
From what I've read, Boise only refuses D-I football programs using the color blue. Other colors are OK and D2 programs can use blue.
I suspect that prosecuting a school for using any color other that blue would be difficult (and risk invalidation of their trademark)

Guys, I'm no lawyer, but I suspect Boise may not have the trademark they believe they have regarding the color blue.
I currently work at a D-3 school, and Field Turf is aggressively selling us blue turf as an option. We are down to selecting between an alternating light/dark green pattern and blue, and no mention of Boise State has even been brought up in the discussion.

Boise State has been very aggressive in defending this trademark. I'm not sure where Boise's claim to a trademark for all non-green artificial turf came from, and it would seem to be hard to defend in court, but there is a trademark issued by the government for an all-blue playing surface for football and basketball.
Since this is a trademark, and not a patent, failure by Boise to aggressively assert their rights to this trademark could result in loss of the trademark. FieldTurf has no obligation to inform your employer of Boise's claim, and would probably be happy to sell you a blue turf ... and then turn around and sell you another color when Boise intervenes.

The turf fabric doesn't come that way from the manufacturer. The field and lateral lines are in 10-yard sections that get sewn together and then they cut out the space for numbers and hashes and sew in that material. It's more efficient for the manufacturer and prevents one fabrication mistake from having to replace an entire field.

The only bad part is when the rubber surfaces, it will look like a dark stain in the middle of the field. Darker colors don't really show this but brighter ones will. Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Teal is an ugly color in its own right.
Personal tastes aside, teal is a color that is in such a middle ground for TV cameras that -- whether or not anyone ever agrees with me that it looks bad -- it won't look consistent. Certain shades of green give many TV cameras fits and depending on the light and the quality of the camera/control equipment/engineer from one week to the next, this field won't look the same on camera two weeks in a row. If you've ever looked at Coastal's teal uniforms on a weekly basis, you know what I'm talking about. The field could look like a swimming pool one week and Clenz's pictures of the old Vet the next.
