The Portland State defense has only four full-time returning starters but that doesn't tell the entire tale of that side of the ball for 2014. Eight other returners have made starts, and 15 of the 21 players added on last February's signing day were on defense, including eight defensive linemen and four defensive backs. Five of the signees were transfers who were brought in to compete to start as all transfers are in Head Coach Nigel Burton's recruiting plan. And, all five competed in spring ball allowing them more time to learn the Viking system.
