Have been a lot of message board talk over the last few months, most of it likely from the same UND fan, but this column http://missoulian.com/college/griz/speltz-big-sky-s-commish-eyes-change/article_921c10a0-1ab4-11e4-8876-001a4bcf887a.html?comment_form=true from the Missoulian does add to the discussion.

The CAA has been told no plenty of times. The Big Sky has maybe 3 teams that could make the jump today. If it does happen it would be the Big Sky elite + MVFC elite = new WAC. This will NOT happen.

Fritz Neighbor is TWICE the writer that Speltz is. Sad that the Missoulian removed Neighbor from that position as the Griz Beat Writer.

The Big Sky presidents don't support this idea. Even Fullerton admits that. Probably pie in the sky.

I told him how UND is in a contract with the Alerus (13,500 capacity) for another 5 years, he said they will remodel Memorial Stadium to a 20k stadium (in its playing days that stadium held 10k, it now has seating on one side and is used for UND practice). A lot of stuff would need to happen before this becomes a reality.

That is at best a 10 year project unless someone wants to give you guys a big check like SDSU.

Having the seats is one thing, filling them is another. The biggest thing is how does Fullerton expect to make this happen? He seriously thinks the rest of FBS is going to just allow half the BSC to go FBS and divvy up their money into even smaller pieces of the pie? The guy is delusional.

I didn't see much in that article that would support a split. My question with the Big Sky is when and if Idaho comes back in football.

Sometimes that's a good thing. Mike Tranghese once proposed that the ACC should consider the Big East football schools as football-only members, create a 16 team conference and maintain some stability between the leagues in other sports. ACC unequivocally said no, and a decade ESPN told them to start thinking otherwise.

His posts are certainly well thought out. But there are so many moving parts and agendas involved not to mention some pretty off the wall scenarios I just dont see how he can consider them factual. And he does consider his posts fact.

Are you really going to try to make a case that the WAC wasn't a bad conference?

Are you really going to try to make a case that the WAC wasn't a bad conference?

I am making a case that the SB is the new WAC 2.0, and if App St and GSU thinks going to the SB (WAC 2.0) was a good idea, then maybe it is. Those conferences (WAC, SB) was like the GWFC in the FCS its a conference to get your foot in the door until another conference comes calling.

I don't care if it was good or bad, it won't involve the Big Sky because they aren't going to reclassify a whole conference, just reanimate existing ones.

I think the timeline to resurrect the WAC under that name has passed, SiouxVolley said on SS that the FBS Big Sky would be a division of the SunBelt. Unless it becomes a division of the Mountain West, it doesn't sound appealing at all. Also without an actual FBS (minus p5 conferences) playoff all you will have is a bunch of crappy bowl games to pick from. No thanks I choose FCS where a real NC is crowned.

Why are you misleading with the title of this thread. You made it look like it's a done deal, but remember it's ultimately up to the school presidents. They're clearly uncomfortable with the idea. Please don't mislead like you're doing.

Plus Fullerton has said in the past he is ready to move the Big Sky up "WHEN" the p5 conferences split away and the g5 conferences are on their own, that hasn't happened either. We could be looking at a decade or so from now. No one really knows.

I don't think the Big Sky is going anywhere.

Nope.

If Montana & MSU ain't open to the move up in the current atmosphere (and they aren't) then this is just filler and something to talk about but there is no split anywhere on the horizon no matter who wants to talk about it unless UM & MSU lead the charge...

Not trying to be a dick or anything but that is just a fact and there is zero talk or want that I've seen for moving ESPECIALLY with what we've seen happen lately. Personally, I've never been more against going FBS than right now.

The do away with bowls and enter a 16 team (or whatever team) playoff if and when the p5 split will help ease the negativity of the FBS.

Of course, said that forever. If lower FBS takes on the FCS model then all is good.

I was for an FBS move one summer ago because I saw a split coming and didn't know (still don't) how it would affect where the FCS fell in line.

Moving FBS to fall back to "fcs" if the G5 and FCS merged together was a risk I, as a fan, was willing to take if it meant not falling off of the "second teir" of football. At that time it didn't look like that G5/FCS merge would happen though.

It looks more that way now, so I'm good with sitting for right now.

If there is an FBS split, and another Championship added to NCAA Football, then I think moving up could be more affordable in the future than it is right now for some FCS Teams or Leagues. Here is my projection if there is an FBS split in the future, and how the scholarship levels would be defined. IMO, if there is a split, it also needs to be defined by scholarships too.

D1: DI FBS P5 81 min - 90 Max Approx 80 Teams
D2: DI FBS G5 71 min - 80 Max Approx 80 Teams (Some FCS Teams/Leagues would move here; Would be allowed to play top Level)
D3: DI FCS 0 min - 50 Max Approx 80 Teams (Max Scholarship level would adjust down; Some FCS Teams/Leagues would move here)
D4: DII 0 min - 30 Max
D5: DIII 0

Scholarship Slots would allow for some merging of Groups.

I've never seen the draw for any Big Sky team to move to FBS. Of course, I also don't buy into the "Avis", we're number two and proud of it, mentality either.

If Big Sky teams moved up, they would still essentially play with each other as they do now, with an occasional home-and-home with Idaho or Wyoming. Playing the same opponents they do now would not boost attendance and would likely have little influence in donations. In the end, the programs would change little but operate at a much higher cost structure.
