This is a list that may be laughable in some selections, but here it is. I thought that Russ was the returning Mercer QB for example.

Real question here. How can they say the team is based on film evals and claim they know what they are looking at if they don't list offensive linemen because there are none returning who made All-SoCon?
I don't usually comment on media but this is bad.
If a player wasn't all-league last year or doesn't have stats, meaning they weren't actually watching film, then they don't list them but yet claim to be a media outlet you should take seriously?

I took a stab at it. If a player is academically ineligible or injured I may not have them. I just took out the two Furman players, anyone who was on my list from Elon, App, and GSU and then added in VMI and Mercer players on my list to make this early rough draft.

I might shift a few around, but I can see a good argument for all of these. Good picks!!! Well Thought out, especially for a 5 minute process.
Well, I mostly did picks based on who I remembered being the best coming back. I didn't take a week to research and go in-depth. There will always be some minor changes but still nothing that is factually known as wrong, no excuse for that.
Keep in mind there are so many underclassmen offensive linemen because the 5 preseason first-team based on those who played in the league are now gone. My first-team was going to be Kendall Lamm, Garrett Frye, Manrey Saint-Amour, Austin Sowell, and Trevor McBurnett. I would have also put Will Corbin and maybe Eric Thoni on the second-team list. All 7 of those names are either on schools who left or they were kicked off their team (Thoni being the one dismissal).
One thing to remember about most of these websites is that the folks running them are just fans in their 30s and 40s who have no experience and simply do it because they either believe money can be made or they just want to seem "official".
The others are kids in their 20s and teens who know even less and are really doing it for fun and hoping it helps them get a shot to get paid. Keep in mind none of these people at those websites are making any money at all, unless you see a ton of ads and even then it's not a lot. Always be careful putting any stock in these websites.
Most alumni here on AGS are just as good or better than these websites. Another thing that makes these websites look bad is they simply copy the all-conference teams and look at stats. They don't talk to coaches or SIDs and when they talk to players they simply reach out on social media and never go through the SIDs. They also don't really know what they are watching. I could throw out probably 10 things I look for in a player and they would have no clue how to judge it.
There are a lot of mistakes and very little or zero fact checking with most mom and pop websites. Any website that says they didn't list a certain position because it has no stats and no returning all-conference players is just not one to take seriously. I'm not trying to be hard on them but simply pointing out good journalism and evaluating is not done by simply reading the all-conference teams and looking at stats. You have to watch games, talk to people, and more importantly know what you are watching.

OL Kendall Lamm, App State, Sr.
OL Garrett Frye, Georgia Southern, Sr.
OL Adam Sowell, Elon, Sr.
OL Manrey Saint-Amour, Georgia Southern, Sr.
OL Trevor McBurnett, Georgia Southern, Sr.
2nd team
OL Corey Levin, Chattanooga, Soph.
OL Gunner Bromelow, Samford, Jr.
OL Joe Turner, Furman, Jr.
OL T.J. Chamberlin, Wofford, Jr.

I think Trey Robinson is a good choice. Bruce Fowler felt comfortable enough with Robinson as a freshman that he moved Marcus McMorris (who should be in the running for SoCon DPOY) from safety to more of a nickle back/linebacker.
It's hard to guess Furman's starting lineup as Fowler tends to mix it up depending on the opponent, but between McMorris, Robinson, and Thomas, the Paladins should have potentially three all-SoCon players in their defensive backfield.

I figured they left out the O-line because they are the most difficult to really evaluate. You actually have to do your homework with these guys, there are no numbers to go on. I spent my college career there and if my number was anounced over the PA, something bad happened and it probably meant gassers on Monday! Pre-season All anything is about like Pre-season polls, they really don't mean much until you play the game! Thanks for putting in the time.

The reality as well is that 90% of the media doesn't really know the game that well. Most of them just go by stats. There are a lot of variables to why a player can have good stats.

Another name to look out for is Shawn Boone, DE at Furman. Boone is a four year starter at Furman that missed nearly the entire 2014 season with a knee injury. My math may be wrong, but I believe this is his sixth year in the Paladin program after being granted a medical waiver. I expect a good season from him as a veteran player and one that will benefit from playing opposite Gary Wilkins. Gives Furman two pretty imposing bookends on the DL.
Also, in his freshman year Boone made one of the great plays I've ever seen out of a DE against South Carolina. Check out the 1:45 mark.

There are only a handful (if that many) of print reporters that have a real feel for the Southern Conference (Jeff Hartsell and Todd Shanesy come to mind, and the Chattanooga reporter seems knowledgeable (I can't remember his name)). Other than that, most reporters are simply reading press releases.

You aren't joking. I don't remember the year, but Adam Mims torched you guys one year in Birmingham. One man wrecking ball in that offense. They had trouble with a similar-type player this past year in Andrej Suttles as well.
Cannot say you'll never see it happen again. Furman recruits the heck out of Alabama. Perhaps more so than any other SoCon school besides Samford. Granted, in years past Furman has been better than Samford. That's changing.
