GREELEY, Colo. — Dan Hawkins no doubt will have some stories to tell from his first season as coach of the struggling University of Colorado football team. But it's unlikely they'll compare with the tales Scott Downing could spin from his first season coaching the Division I-AA team 60 miles up the road.
A charge of attempted first-degree murder is the latest twist in the case of a former University of Northern Colorado backup punter accused of stabbing the starter in the kicking leg. It also is the latest headline the UNC football team has garnered for something other than its play on the field, which has produced a dismal 1-6 start.
"The first season at UNC will be a giant chapter in my soon-to-come-out book, I can tell you that," Downing said through a stiff-upper-lip smile.
