"The NCAA is probably the most reprehensible organization God ever created," the Hall of Fame running back said at a roundtable discussion on the NFL with Barry Sanders (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/6571/barry-sanders) and Harry Carson on his right and host Larry King on his left. "Total exploitation. The kind of money they make, the kind of life they live, it's embarrassing."
Brown said the NCAA is pretentious when it says it is "doing things for the young people."
"I'm totally for change and total change," Brown said. "And I think that body needs to be torn apart and put back together with everybody's best interests in mind."
Brown said what he said with a definite purpose.
"I wanted to say it as harsh as I could, because I want them to come at me in any way they want to," Brown said. "Because it's a shame the way that it happens."
Do you agree with his sentiments?

Yes................. Probably the only thing I agree with him on. But I think his reasons are different than mine.

Agree to a point.
How much more do student athletes need? They are already getting a free education. Sh**, I had to work 30-35/hours per week to pay for school while going to school.
They get to go to school for free...xeyebrowx

Free? Hardly. I wish we only had to put in 30-35 hours a week. The full cost of attendance is more as in incidentals that run about 2 grand a year.. Plus you have NCAA rules on what you can make in the offseason. Not to mention that when you stay on campus for summer work outs its on their dime.
Plus the schools are now pulling schollies on players who dont work out but they tell the recruits the schollie is renewed every year and it just a formality. Kid comes in and gets injured they pull his schollie. Some things need to change.

If you want to talk about exploitation, let's start with the bowl games where the executive earns an average of $438,000 to put on one game during the year. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2012/12/11/bowl-bosses-pay-college-football/1762487/

Bull**it!
Don't give me that crap. A full-ride scholarship is just that....tuition, room/board and books. Cry me a river about 'incidentals'...every kid has them. Ya, it is free for them. No tuition, room/board and books.

How is it free? You say you had to work to put yourself through school. Athletes are doing the same thing but actually putting in more time than you did working 30-35 a week..

Is he blaming Jehovah for this?
Personally, I don't rank the NCAA in the same league with the Ku Klux Klan, Nazi Party or MTV.
The NCAA sponsors a lot of championships, most of which lose money. It's only source of real revenue is March Madness.
That said, I think things would be better off if the Big Time programs took their football teams out of the NCAA.
Jim Brown is just another talking head who doesn't realize that Alabama does not represent the norm in college athletics.

Brown looks at the NCAA as an organization that runs a slave auction and the schools as plantations.

So not having to pay tuition, room/board and books is not considered going to college for free? So practice, weightlifting and position meetings takes up an enormous amount of time for the student athlete?
When a kid does not have to pay for that tuition, room/board and books then yes, it is for free.
It's great that a kid can achieve a full-ride scholarship to attend college but they have classes just like the kid that doesn't play sports. But you're never going to convince me that a full-ride is not for free for that kid. Sure he has practice, games, meetings and whatever else but most kids need to work during school to pay for that education.
I would have loved to play a game, positions meetings, weight-training and practice for my education but I wasn't 'college athletic' material.

Trust me when I say--its not as glamorous as you think. After time it really does become a job. The only difference is who is writing the check.
