Despite the 38-30 loss to Central Arkansas this past Thursday in Huntsville, Sam Houston State still remains in first place when viewing the Southland Conference standings with a 2-0 record, having wins over Nicholls St and Northwestern St in their back pocket. The Bearkats will complete their longest stretch of games at home at three games when the McNeese State Cowboys come to town for Parents Weekend.

Sam Houston State, who gave up four turnovers against UCA will look to protect the ball against the Cowboys, who a year ago used four Kats turnovers to get the win. The two bright spots for the Kats heading into this game are the running game of the Kats and the returns units for the Kats. DD Terry will be the focal point of the Kats running game, averaging 104 rushing yards per game, two weeks after putting up 176 yards in the Kats' last SLC outing against Nicholls St. On the return front, the Kats are averaging 19.9 yards per punt return, more than they are on the kick return. This past week, Derrick Harris returned a punt for a touchdown and other Kats returns set the Kats up with great field position. Harris not only broke the record for longest punt return (a record set in 1974), he set the Kats' mark for most punt return yards in a single game, a record that stood 19 years.

Last year, the Kats fell to the Pokes, 31-26 in Lake Charles when the Cowboys made their triumphant return to Cowboy Stadium last year following the devastation that Hurricane Rita provided to the Lake Charles community. The Cowboys took advantage of three Bearkat fumbles and intercepted a Bearkat pass, leading to four McNeese scores.

McNeese comes into the game fresh off a 20-17 win over SFA in Nacogdoches. The Cowboys are now 1-1 in conference play after falling to Texas St-San Marcos in Lake Charles the week before. This past week, SFA used a crisp passing game completeing 18 of 24 passes while not commiting any of the turnovers that cost them the previous week against the Bobcats. The Kats must look to stop Steven Whitehead if they are going to be successful. Whitehead seems to gravitate to the ball and will pose quite the threat to the Bearkats defense.

I like that choice. Hicks is not impressive. However, I will admit that most of this comment
is coming from watching the UCA game last week on TV.

This has apparently upset a lot of the players and I know many of the Kat supporters do not like it.

Obviously you have not seen any other games he has played. He is not going to set the world on fire with stats, but he manages a game very well and does not get rattled. he is a gamer.

IMO, this is a POOR decision by the coaching staff at this point in the season. Pate has been nursing a bad shoulder and was supposed to have surgery earlier in the year and now he is going to start?xidiotx

Pate back under center for Kats

Quarterback healthy enough to take over starting job Saturday
Cody Stark
Assistant Sports Editor

After missing the last six games with a severe shoulder separation, Sam Houston State quarterback Wade Pate is finally healthy enough to move back into the starting lineup.

Pate, who led the Bearkats to an 41-3 victory over Arkansas-Monticello in the season opener thanks to a 259-yard and three-touchdown performance, will get the nod behind center when SHSU clashes with McNeese State in a pivotal Southland Conference matchup Saturday night at Bowers Stadium.

“Wade has been ready the last three games, and we had intended to get him in prior to this but haven’t had the opportunity,” SHSU head coach Todd Whitten said. “Going into the season, Wade was our starter and had an excellent first game, fall camp and spring. When a starter is injured and is healthy enough to play, they should get an opportunity. It just wasn’t the right time until now.”

Brett Hicks took over for Pate and has started the last five games, leading the Bearkats to a 3-2 record, including a pair of league wins over Northwestern State and Nicholls State. He has thrown for 1,155 yards with five touchdowns and eight interceptions.

cNeese prepares for explosive Sam Houston offense (10/25) PDF Print E-mail

By GARY LANEY
AMERICAN PRESS

In the spring, D.D. Terry was a linebacker and Brett Hicks was Sam Houston State's fourth, and often forgotten, quarterback.

The pair lead the Southland Conference's hottest offense as the Bearkats (4-3, 2-0) prepare to host McNeese State (3-4, 1-1) as the league's sole unbeaten team in conference games.

"They have as good of a run-pass balance as there is in the league," McNeese interim head coach Matt Viator said. "They give you a lot of problems. Their running back is a track champion and their quarterback, Hicks, does a good job throwing the ball."

And, Hicks has won. Since taking over as starting quarterback, the Bearkats have a 3-2 record with one of the losses coming at Texas and the other last week against Central Arkansas. More importantly, Sam Houston won its first two SLC games after Hicks took over as the starter.

McNeese offensive line gains stability (10/26) PDF Print E-mail

By GARY LANEY
AMERICAN PRESS

When Matt Viator became interim head coach at McNeese State, one area where the Cowboys seemed to be in real trouble was the offensive line.

By the end of the season's fourth week, the Cowboys were without starting center Lance Fremin for the season and guard James Jordan was also out, leaving offensive line coach Ben Norton with two starters.

But instead of things getting worse, they've gotten better.

In three games since Viator was named head coach, the patchwork line is averaging 195.3 yards per game rushing after averaging 145.3 in the first four games.

Quarterback Derrick Fourroux has enjoyed enough time to complete 59 percent of his passes (43 of 73), up from 45 percent in the first four games (27 of 60) and the Cowboys are scoring 22.3 points per game, about five points less than the first four games (27.5), which included a 76-0 win over overmatched West Virginia Tech.

An article from McNeese Athletics...

Cowboys travel to Huntsville to play Sam Houston State in conference game

Bearkats are only remaining undefeated team in SLC play

Oct. 26, 2006

Two of the top kick returners in the country will be on display Saturday when McNeese State and Sam Houston State meet up in a Southland Conference football game in Huntsville, TX.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Bowers Stadium with the Cowboys' Steven Whitehead and the Bearkats Derrick Harris to be the featured performers.

Whitehead, a junior from Slidell, LA, currently leads the nation in punt returns and he's also tops in the SLC in both punt returns and kickoff returns. He's averaging 21.3 yards a punt return and 23.7 a kickoff return.

Harris, a senior from Waco, Tx is averaging 28.6 yards per punt return and 21.5 per kickoff return. He isn't ranked nationally in punt returns because he has not met the minimum requirement of 1.5 returns per game.

Both have run punts back for touchdowns this season, Whitehead having a 60 yard sprint and Harris a long of 90 yards.

Thanks to a Bobcats loss in the last hour, the Kats are in a wonderful position and can really strengthen their chances at winning the SLC.

Currently, SHSU has two one loss teams behind them, McNeese and SFA. If the Kats were to defeat McN and SFA loses, they would be two games ahead of the competition. Even with an SHSU win coupled with an SFA win, we'd have a big battle next week in which SHSU could really put a stamp on the SLC race...

All the scenarios aside, we have SHSU vs McN tonight. This is the toughest game year in and year out on SHSU schedule. It'll be a challenge as always...

Pregame show is about 10 minutes away...

Pregame Show with Todd Whitten has begun...

TW commends UCA for coming out and making plays SHSU was not able to make, talks about the penalties and mistakes last week...

TW says UCA would be right in the mix this year if they were in the SLC though they do have a lot of seniors this year. Says UCA has some nice facilities. TW said he did not have SHSU ready to play.

TW says Malone sprained his ankle and will be able to play next week hopefully. Skinner hurt his knee and will have to have surgery. Cobey will be back from his injury this week.

TW said he has not been happy about the XP play (as it relates to the misses). Pearcy will be in there now and he says it's something that does have to be fixed.

TW says Harris has kept SHSU in the game, especially last week on the punt returns. Doing a good job on when to and when not to return. Says he's one of the more dangerous guys in the league.

TexasTerror
October 28th, 2006, 06:51 PM
Pre-game continued...

TW talks about the QB situation and recaps the Pate injury, saying we're very fortunate to have Hicks. Pate is healthy and that he deserves a chance to go out and be the starting QB. TW says the Kats would probably not do that if the Kats were winning. The UCA loss gave an opprotunity for Pate to play and they believe that going into the season, Pate was the best chance to win.

TW always will have concerns about Pate's injury and that it still is easy for him to injure it. TW compliments the doctors and say they wouldn't allow the Kats to put him out there if he wasn't ready.

TW commends Terry and says his running game makes it a lot easier. TW says having an 100 yard rusher is helpful especially if Kats can avoid turnovers.

TW says McN has won two games since Tate's dismissal, so they got passed it. Says McN is playing well, playing hard and the coaching staff is doing a great job keeping things together. TW says they are athletic.

TW says the Kats have to look out for Whitehead, the WR and kick returner. TW believes he has great change of direction, vision and speed. He believes there is a certain ability to returning kicks and he has all the pieces to do well. TW says Kats will not kick to Whitehead in a conventional way.

TW says McN has greatest tradition in conference and that they have a bit more belief that comes with tradition. TW says Kats have to eliminate turnovers to have a shot. TW feels McN has not changed things too much from Tate to Viator, saying it is 85% the same.

TW believes the OL is playing great and they are a tight-knit group, which is why they are such a good group on the field. Says he can not be prouder of the group.

TW says this is a big game. Keys are to eliminate turnovers.
