Wonder when our AD (Larsen) will announce our last game?

It will be interesting to see if our cupcake game (Eastern Washington) will be moved to the FCS opener.

The good thing is that if the NDSU EWU game goes to the FCS kickoff then NDSU has to find a game for either September 3rd or September 10th. Hopefully it is just some cupcake so after NDSU is up big the backups can get some quality playing time.

Likely 0 D1 wins going into conference play and no Montana to boost SOS (I know school doesn't control that).

Really can't afford anything less than 7-1 in conference play, which could be doable with how soft the conference portion is.

Who do we talk to about getting that updated? It doesn't have 1/3 of our schedule.

Starting 9/3, we should be: at Eastern Illinois, vs Northern Arizona, Bye Week, at Northern Illinois (FBS), at South Dakota State, vs Indiana State, at Missouri State, then the rest of the posted schedule is correct.

WCU will be going for three in a row over Furman. Would be the 1st time since Steve Hodgin's CATS won from 92-94. If we are, by Nov 12, a six win team, you will see the entire visitors side at Paladin Stadium PACKED to the gills with Catamount faithful. Hope it's a good one as I fully expect Furman to bounce back in 2016 from mediocrity. GO CATS!

CCSU is going to play D2 Bowie State two years in a row, even though Bowie is located nowhere nearby? I would think if CCSU wanted a home game against a D2 school, it could find a way to schedule a game against a NE-10 Conference team (though it is possible NE-10 teams only have openings during the first week of the season).

(I paid some attention to Bowie State last season because they had a surprisingly good season and are based in the DC area/closest D2 football school to where I live.)

(I paid some attention to Bowie State last season because they had a surprisingly good season and are based in the DC area/closest D2 football school to where I live.)

First, it is only tentative - it hasn't been announced by the school. Second, as you probably know, NE-10 school have just 1 non-conference game available and it is very likely no opponents had the date CCSU was looking for. CIAA schools have more availability (3 non-conference games) and Bowie, MD to New Britain, CT is a relatively moderate bus ride (325 miles; 5 hours). Personally, I would have preferred a home game vs. historical rival Southern Connecticut State (NE-10), but I am guessing we couldn't get a mutual date worked out, so we set up a 2-year deal with Bowie.

Yes, Bowie was a pretty good D2 last season. They won the CIAA Championship and lost to Assumption (NE-10) in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs. Not sure what they return for 2016.

----

Also, Bryant University announced their 2016 schedule. The Bulldogs open up their season by hosting a NE-10 team (Merrimack). It will mark the second time in 3 years the two teams have met and the fourth time they have played since Bryant moved to Division I.

Non-Conference Games
Sep. 3 vs. Merrimack (D-II)
Sep. 10 at Montana State (Big Sky)
Sep. 17 vs. Brown (Ivy)
Oct. 1 at Maine (CAA)
Nov. 12 at Coastal Carolina (FCS Ind.)

I was just making sure I wasn't alone in thinking that was a preposterous statement.

UNI has 2 OOC games, alone, that are bigger (EWU and Montana). Couple that with conference match ups vs NDSU, a potential top 10-15 SDSU and ISUr team...and...

That game is already 4-5 games down the pecking order, and we've looked at only 1 other team.

This is entirely a guess, but I imagine it had something to do with a return game.

As it is, we now have 6 home games. That is nice...

It stinks that TUNA is D2. They really should be in the FCS, but they can't find a home. They are one of the top programs in D2, and would be competitive on day 1. We are probably the only OVC team that would beat them 10 times out of 10 right now... and that would likely change in a few years as they added depth and increased their talent level to FCS across the board. They would win more than they lost in the OVC as it stands, and they would trounce a lot of FCS teams. Not many want to play them for that reason.

As it is, they are D2 and it doesn't look good... it doesn't do anything for our schedule other than add a fun game against an old in-state conference rival from our D2 days. That said, with games against LSU, Liberty, and Coastal, our out of conference schedule is respectable.

To the Georgetown folks on here, do you know who the Hoya's play 9/17? I was originally told SFU would be travelling to Columbia that week, but Columbia plays Fordham that week, so I must have gotten some bad info. I assume SFU owes a return trip after last season so I was wondering if it could be that weekend.

Nope they play 7 OVC games a year so they can play a classic. So they don't have to play us this year.

I'm having fun playing with MVFC OOC historical schedules vs FCS teams...

Here's a fun UNI state

UNI last lost a road regular season OOC game on the road in 1997 - McNeese State

Since then UNI is:
12-0 on the road vs FCS teams
22-2 at home vs FCS teams (only losses were both to SFA - 04 24-21 and 2010 21-20)

UDLAP has won 5 Mexican national championships and play in a stadium known as "The Temple of Pain" which may be the coolest stadium nickname ever. However, I have no idea on what a win over a Mexican team is worth in the eyes of the playoff committee. ;)

So if they lose I assume it will be deemed a "quality loss" by Mark Wilson. They now have a real shot of getting in. Just make sure you don't win, Toreros, or it won't count for anything.

“BE IT RESOLVED: That the Board of Trustees authorizes the administration toenter into a contract with Global Synthetics Environmental, LLC.”

All spending above $250,000 must be board approved and they are having a meeting Friday afternoon. Wouldn't it be nice to see a green field again!

That is undeniably true. It costs money to run a Div. I football program, and FCS schools don't get the TV money that FBS (particularly P5) programs get. So getting these paychecks is a way to help the budget.

They're actually some of my least favorite games since 90+% of them are typically a thorough butt whooping. It's pretty boring to watch for both fan bases.
Depends on matchup. The FBS team will likely be a favorite, sure. And lower level FCS teams will probably get throttled. But with upper level FCS teams, their games against FBS foes are often quite competitive. At least for the first half to 2/3s. Then sometimes the increased depth of the FBS team factors in and they are able to pull away a bit. But still, I personally find such games entertaining enough, especially recognizing the financial aspects.

I'm actually going to agree with Jay, for once. Maybe it's because UNI is part of a group that is "a step above" the "rest of the FCS", but I've never gone into a UNI vs *insert FBS team here* game and thought "Welp, we're boned".

Going back to 03 vs Iowa State UNI is just 2-6, HOWEVER, only 2 of those losses were by more than 1 score, in 3 of the losses UNI actually out gained Iowa State by over 100 yards. The average score, even including the two "blowouts" is 15-22. Taking those two, what appear to be, exceptions out and the average score is 20-21

UNI hasn't beaten Iowa since 1895 but the last three match ups were a 16-17 loss where Iowa blocked 2 field goals in the final 12 seconds, a 16-27 loss that was a one score game until about the mid point of the 4th quater, and a 23-31 loss that was a 1 point game with under 7 minutes to go.

Wisconsin, with a freshman QB making his first start, was a 5 point loss in 2012.

Hawaii, with a 11:30 PM Central Kick off time was a 3 point loss and the worst game UNI had played in a while.

That's all with a 22 scholarship disadvantage, Wisconsin, Iowa and Iowa State spending more on football than UNI does on all athletics and always playing on the road.

I guess it's a matter of perception given the program you follow

Right now? No.

If I had to guess it will likely hover around 8.5

Iowa returns a lot, and found out yesterday Drew Ott gets a medical for last year. NDSU doesn't have a Christian McCaffery or David Johnson to expose whatever weakeness Iowa has with that type of running back.

Samford? Probably because we may have asked them to play us this year and they are still paralyzed with fear.

UTC? Because it takes time to prepare a schedule for the 'best team ever'.

Mercer? Because beating the 'best team ever' takes a lot of luck. So they aren't releasing a schedule this year, they are just getting on a bus each week and picking a random school to play and hoping for the best. :D

Is it though, based on where Vegas is going to get the money line at?

Iowa returns:
4 o-line starters
TE George Kittle - lead team in TD receptions
WR Matt VandeBerg - last season he had the third most catches in a single season in Iowa history
RB LeShun Daniels - power back that averaged just under 5 YPC last year on 145 carries with 8 TD
RB Akrum Wadley - Averaged 6.0 yards per carry with 7 TDs last season
QB CJ Bethard who completed 62% of his passes for over 2,800 yards, 17 TD to 5 INT for an efficiency of 139.5. He also ran for over 400 yards with sacks taken out of consideration

Defense:
S Desmond King - who would have been a top half first round draft pick comes back into the secondary for his senior year. 8 picks, 72 tackles, 13 PBU and 21 PD
LB Josey Jewell - teams leading tackler with 126, 7.5 tfl, 3 sacks, 4 picks
I think there are 6 or 7 other starters back as well.

Pretty much every early prediction has Iowa as a top 10-15 team.

Is 8.5 really that unbelievable of a line for a top 10-15 FBS team playing an FCS team?

Also, I despise Iowa. The fact that even I'm going "Yeah, they'll probably be pretty damn good again" should say something.

Yes there was sarcasm.

I have not missed an Iowa game in the last 3-4 years and I know how they roll. (I always watch it through ESPN3 or through one my cousins logins on their local cable provider) One great season for every 3-5 decent/mediocre seasons. With the offense coming back and probably not missing a beat, sans Wentz (but the people here knew how I felt about Stick and the championship dilemma), that defense is going to be on its feet more than they want to. Also, the CBs for NDSU will be new but they will have a little time to gel and a get a feel of the game. This will be the "final" test to see if NDSU can truly beat a top10 team (I see Iowa finishing 20 in the nation), but, the odds are against Iowa have a stellar season so I could see this game coming down to another NDSU drive to win it all.

8.5 points or over a TD is alot....I know Vegas is probably going to put it there, but how many times does NDSU need to cover those spreads (or, heaven forbid, continue to win) before they learn. xlolx

Strength versus strength Clenzy...I like the Bison in a matchup with a team like Iowa more so than an equivalent ranked team out of the SEC or the like. Power football.

Must have missed the "equivalent ranked" part.... xlolx The Bison would have probably put Auburn on their ass too. xthumbsupx :D

The FBS teams that scare me, as far as a game getting out of hand, is a team that has the *gasp* "southern speed" :D or would beat the Bison with athleticism up and down the lineup (Bama for example).

Iowa won "ugly" last year....yes, they won, but I think the Bison are going to hang around and make a game of it.

I didn't miss it. I'm just saying the only SEC teams that Iowa would have lost to would have been Ole Miss and Bama. They are the SEC equivalent of LSU. I think Iowa still doesn't get enough credit for their season. They should have beat Michigan State. They were a legitimate team last year.

And yeah, I would hope Iowa would be able to down Auburn.

"Last year"...like I said man, I like the matchup for NDSU. Shortened game possession wise...take the Bison to cover and the under...pending a stupid line and O/U from Vegas.

Kansas St finished the 2012 season 11-2 and a loss to Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl....before losing to NDSU in 2013. They lost Klein, but there was still plenty of talent on that team (Finished 8-5 with a win over Michigan in the BWW Bowl).

Yeah I'm hopeful but not optimistic about the Iowa game. I'll be going and cheering but I like NDSU better against big 12 teams that aren't as used to such physical play. Iowa will be comfortable from the get go with our style. I still think our D keeps it close because they will be GOOOD next year.

I wouldn't assume that, it's just how it worked out this year. There may not be any in the near future, but I'm sure an Ivy game, or Marist or some Big South team in NC or VA, or even a second Patriot could be on the table for the third game.

Best way to get 'em - early in the year while they are still working on timing - C, QB, FB (B-Back) & Pitch relationships with the HB's (A-Backs) with any new players in that 'battery'....also could spend all Spring and all Summer/Pre-Season working on it, defensively, if they wanted to. Making no predictions of course, but IMO that certainly could work in the Bears favor.

Looks like SUU has their 2016 schedule:

-Sept. 3 @ University of Utah
-Sept. 10 vs. Southeast Louisiana
-Sept. 17 BYE WEEK
-Sept. 24 vs. Portland State*
-Oct. 1st @ Montana*
-Oct. 8 vs. UC Davis*
-Oct. 15 @ North Dakota*
-Oct. 22 vs. Weber State*
-Oct. 29 @ Idaho State*
-Nov. 5 vs. Montana State*
-Nov. 12 @ BYU
-Nov. 19 @ NAU*

I really like this schedule despite how strong it is, all D1 teams with a good mix of home and away contests. However this will be rough and puts us repeating as the Big Sky Champs as pretty doubtful, especially with recent personnel losses especially on defense.

Two things:

First, Charleston Southern has their home opener scheduled for Sept 3rd vs John L Smith's D2 Kentucky State team. Obviously, a D2 game could be bought out with the right incentive but CSU has zero fundraising and operates on half a shoestring budget so that buyout money would have to come from somewhere else.

CSU looked small against JSU in their playoff game but were athletic. Valley teams are blue collar and tough on the LOS. Look at the Portland State/UNI playoff game. UNI totally manhandled them at the LOS. Both Bailey and Smith ran for 200+.

I bet the UNI coaches were licking their chops when they saw they had PSU. UNI and NDSU in opposite brackets would have been in the NC game.

Preseason, IMO, NDSU and UNI should be 1-2. Head/head, I give UNI the edge this year with having the NDSU game at home.

CSU's DL averages 250.1875 lbs. There is only two over 260 pounds and they appears to have redshirted last year. Over half of their DL appear to the be the size of LBs at NDSU/UNI/SDSU/ISUr - 220-240

75% of their LB core is under 220. They average 214.0909 pounds

FWIW their OL averages 273 and there are only 4 over 280 on the entire roster.

Unless CSU is extremely skilled at getting off blocks and/or extremely strong I don't see how they hold up against NDSU's size/strength.

I'd have liked to see that game in decent weather. The rain really helped UNI as it meant the trick plays PSU runs were next to impossible to run because of the wet ball.

UNI did dominate that LOS that game though. There were a number of long runs which helped the totals but they happened because of the semi-truck sized holes on the LOS and the fact that Bailey and Smith were bigger than their LBs.

That box score isn't exactly flattering for UNI's defense, either, considering EWU was completely one-dimensional. Did Kupp even play in the 2nd half? We all know EWU's shortcoming's on defense but to completely ignore the other team's is a bit odd, IMO.

Also, UNI's other box scores are making EWU's defense look OK.

That box score isn't exactly flattering for UNI's defense, either, considering EWU was completely one-dimensional. Did Kupp even play in the 2nd half? We all know EWU's shortcoming's on defense but to completely ignore the other team's is a bit odd, IMO.

Kudos to the EWU passing game in that game but UNI at the beginning of the year was nothing like the one at the end. Different QB and team.

Bailey didn't take over until the 2nd half of the NDSU game. UNI at the end of the year would have crushed EWU.

NDSU played UNI 3 weeks later, at home, and gave up more rushing yards on less attempts than EWU did. Both were tight games to the end.

See what I am getting at? The whole 'EWU defense sucks thing' isn't supported by the UNI game.

EWU defense does suck.

UNI has twice the run game, size and strength up front to block than EWU does.

UNI early in the year last year was horrific on offense. I mean, near historic bad the first few weeks yet dominated EWU defense.

EWU's defense does suck: here are some stats for you f'hawk fan:

EWU defensive stats in '15:

Total defense: 117/123 in the FCS -- 476.6 yards/game
Scoring defense: 116/123 in the FCS --- 39.5 points/game
Rushing defense: 120/123 in the FCS --- 258 yards/game

It is supported by the whole season. Pretty hard for you to figure out isn't it.

As I said, your reading comprehension is not there, Bailey didn't play in the EWU, iirc and came into the Bison game the 2nd half....apples/oranges comparison.

Typical.

He didn't? And you are completely ignoring the stats as laid out by me.

The UNI game is not an example that they suck (maybe other games). If it is, then the UNI/NDSU game is an example that NDSU's defense sucks. And again, if it is, then it's certainly an example that UNI's defense sucks since they gave up 100 more yards than EWU did in that game.

Once again, I was talking about the UNI/EWU game.

Hahahahahahahaha! That's awesome! Classic elephant and the blind men approach to football analysis!

NDSU being the national champion isn't supported by the South Dakota game. Moreover, if you just looked at NDSU's playoff games, the only reason that NDSU won was that the four teams they played had four of the five worst offenses in the FCS. It's all clear to me now. Wow, how lucky can one team get?

Once again, I was talking about the UNI/EWU game.
UNI's games before and after the EWU game

Week before
- 15 first downs
- played 3 QBs
- threw for 176 total yards with 1 TD and 1 INT
- Ran for 126 yards on 41 carries (3.1 ypc)
- No 100 yard rusher
- 7 different players recorded at least one carry with 5 getting multiple
- 302 total yards of offense @ 4.0 yards per play.
- Scored 7 points
- 12 punts

EWU game one week later
- 25 first downs
- Played 2 QBs
- 195 yards passing with 3 TDs and 0 picks at a significantly higher completion %
- ran for 266 yards on 48 carries (5.5 ypc)
- 5 players recorded a carry
- 2 100 yard rushers
- 460 yards of offense at 6.2 yards per play
- Scored 38 points
- 6 punts

The next week they played another Big Sky defense and did the same

THEN WE GET TO MVFC PLAY

ISUR:
- 16 first downs
- 2 QBs played
- 146 yards passing at 4.7 yards per attempt (12-31) with 3 picks and 1 TD
- 104 yards rushing @ 2.7 yards per rush
- 250 yards of offense at 3.6 YPP

NDSU:
- 14 first downs
- 158 yards passing
- 277 rushing thanks to Aaron Bailey breaking multiple 50+ yarders including an 83 yarder. Non AB runners were 120 yards on 25 carries...not great...

WIU:
- 2 QBs played
- 15 first downs
- 170 passing yards at 4.7 yards per attempt with 2 picks no TDs
- 91 yards rushing at 2.83 ypc
- 261 yards total offense at 3.8 ypc

SDSU:
- finally down to 1 QB
- 16 first downs
- 113 yards passing with no TD and no INT
- 223 yards rushing BUT once again it was all Aaron Bailey with 169 of those 223. Non AB runners? 54 yards on 18 carries - 3.0 ypc
- 259 yards total offense at 4.2 YPP

Noticing a trend yet that makes your "UNI put yards on NDSU argument" invalid yet?

Clenz,

So 5.5 ypc and 266 yards vs. EWU is "running all over them".

But, Bailey breaks multiple long runs, the rest of your RB's get 5 ypc and all combined they get 277 yards vs. NDSU and that is "not great". Huh?

The original statement was that UNI really didn't do anything to EWU that they didn't do to NDSU 3 weeks later. Now it's turned into an entire season of comparison's. If you want to say EWU's defense sucks, fine. But the UNI game is not an example that it does.

That's bad news - couldn't get even 1 non-conference FCS game at home. Does any other team in FCS have such a hard time getting home non-conference games?

On the bright side ... Montana, Towson, Columbia, and Albany are very nice opponents for Saint Francis.

Have you ever gone to a CCSU game at SFPA? I drove into Loretto on my way home after the UNH at Pittsburgh game in 2010. Talk about being in the middle of nowhere! And a very, very, very small town! I thought I had driven into a monastery or something like that when I saw all the statues on the way into town/campus!! Mapquest says only 79 miles from Pittsburgh. It just seemed like hours away going out US 22 then off on state/county roads. :D

Agree though, a very good OOC schedule with Montana, Towson, Columbia and Albany.

SFU actually has more people within 20 miles than 8 of the 10 MVFC schools (only Missouri State and Youngstown State have more), but having a small student population and being an hour down the road from Penn State can't help.

It would be hard to get teams from beyond a bus trip to get there, due to airport availability. The nearest airport that I know of is 1 hour away in State College, but the nearest airport to hope to get a direct flight is Pittsburgh, over 2 hours away.

RedFlash

In addition to the difficulties in location, I have to think it's also very difficult to attract teams to Loretto given the facilities at the school. There is no visitor's locker room at the stadium and no permanent restrooms either. The school sets up port-a-john's in one corner of the stadium - with portable hand washing stations near by. I've been told for a few years that improvements are coming, but I'll believe it when I see it.

With that said, I've been told by a pretty good source that Towson may actually visit in 2017. They're probably only a 3 hour bus ride away, so maybe it's a possibility, but then again, I have been told that SFU likes to have 2 guarantee games each year to help fund the program, so it may be wishful thinking.

Sorry, I should have used the NCAA's term of "non-countable" which means non-countable for everything including wins, statistics, rankings, records, etc., Basically, any game scheduled against a non-countable opponent is a glorified scrimmage and the NCAA disavows any knowledge that the competition took place.

The full list of non-countable's for 2015-16 is available here --> http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/ForSIDs/CountOppDefinition.pdf

One of Wagner's OOC games is home against DII Saint Anselm on Thursday, Sep. 1.

(Saint Anselm is also not long for DII; they've begun the process of dropping to DIII along with Brevard College, a North Carolina school that has also played games against FCS schools in recent years)

You sure St. Francis isn't taking cues from Georgetown?

If this is accurate, that Sept 10 date is at a just-barely-D2 which happens to be an 8-hour bus ride from Davidson's campus. I get that Pioneer teams go on the road against sub-D1's fairly often but this seems just cruel to all involved.

I had forgotten that Davidson played KY Wesleyan in 2015, winning 14-7 and accounting for Paul Nichols' second career win (he's now 3-31 in three years with two of those wins coming against the aforementioned KWC and the non-NCAA -- and disallowed -- University of Faith). Clearly, this game in Owensboro is the back end of a home-and-home arrangement....with a virtually non-scholarship D2 program. I genuinely like that some Pioneer programs want to be taken seriously and that several of those programs should be -- I'm looking at you, Dayton and San Diego -- but it's this kind of rec league scheduling that makes it hard to take the PFL seriously as a whole.

BTW, the schedule is official now, meaning that all FCS 2016 schedules are known at this point.

Two of the five TV contests are Friday night league games. On Oct. 21, the first true night game at Yale Bowl takes place with Penn in town for an NBC Sports Network broadcast. The Blue hosted Harvard last November in a 2:30 game that featured darkness in the second half and a spectacularly lit Bowl.

Hey, anybody who lives or has lived in an area where Sheetz convenience stores are located NEVER makes fun of Sheetz. They put most similar kinds of stores like 7-Eleven to shame.

What is a lot more likely is that people will get into arguments about whether Sheetz or Wawa is better.
