Dartmouth apologizes for football brawl
By DAVID TIRRELL-WYSOCKI
Associated Press Writer
The Dartmouth athletic department and football team apologized
for the fight that broke out at the end of its game with Holy Cross
last weekend as the college and police continued to investigate the
incident.
After winning in overtime, Holy Cross players celebrated atop
the Dartmouth "D" painted on the field, and fights broke out when
the teams lined up for post-game handshakes. Some players were
thrown to the ground and kicked. Coaches, campus security and
Hanover police broke it up. No one was hurt.
"It is obvious that many players and some staff of both teams
were involved in this incident," athletic director Jo Ann Harper
said Thursday. But she said she was not able to identify specific
participants.
"Coach (Buddy) Teevens, his staff and his players have
acknowledged that the actions displayed Saturday were not in
keeping with acceptable standards of behavior at Dartmouth, nor
with the great traditions of Dartmouth football and Dartmouth
athletics in general," Harper said.
The game wasn't televised and the fight so unexpected and short
that the cameraman filming the game for Dartmouth caught only the
end.
Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone has said the video hasn't been
very useful. He said punches were thrown, but he's relying more on
memory than video.
"For me to say what an individual person was doing ... there
was too much going on," he said.
Harper said she has concluded her investigation and turned
information over to Dartmouth's dean for review.
Acting Dean Daniel Nelson says if his review finds sanctions are
warranted against individuals or the team under Dartmouth's
standards of conduct, the matter will be handled through the normal
disciplinary process.
Holy Cross sports information officer Charlie Bare in Worcester,
Mass., didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.

Now see, that's what I would expect a fine institution should do. No matter how tawdry the display of unsportsmanship by the other team, it's never acceptable to allow it to devolve into a full on fracas with punches being thrown. Good for Dartmouth to step up and apologize.

did Dartmouth suspend anyone for this week?

No, I'm pretty sure Dartmouth did not suspend anyone, at least yet.

Did Holy Cross?

Since Yale didn't suspend its starting qb and running back after they were arrested for a fight (in a bar I think) a couple weeks ago, it would seem a a bit odd and unfair that players would be suspended for throwing a punch or two, or pushing and shoving, in a situation in which no one seems to know or have said exactly what happened, and is not on tape. Of course, who knows what may happen.

Charges against five Yale student-athletes, stemming from an Oct. 1 incident outside a downtown market, have been dismissed.

Football players Mike McLeod and Matt Polhemus and hockey players Ben Mills, Matt Nelson and Alec Richards were all in Superior Court in New Haven Friday to face charges stemming from an altercation in front of Gourmet Heaven on Broadway on Oct. 1.

Not sure WHAT "Gourmet Heaven" is.

Gourmet Heaven is not a bar. My bad. See blurb:

Gourmet Heaven expands to Whitney. But will the business follow?

Gourmet Heaven, the popular convenience store located on Broadway, will open a second location at 44 Whitney Ave., directly across from Audubon Street, Andrea Pizziconi, PC '01, development associate for University Properties, told the Herald yesterday.

The new location, expected to open for business this fall, will offer the same grocery, convenience, and deli items that have been mainstays of the original store. But after "gaining some experience" at his Broadway location, Chung Cho, the owner of Gourmet Heaven, said that the new location would be "a bit more upscale and a bit more modern."

It looks like suspensions at Dartmouth are unlikely. See excerpt and link for full article.

"In the statement, Harper wrote that she has "told the Dartmouth players and staff that this type of behavior is unacceptable." Harper mentioned that she has not been able to identify participants in the post-game fight on an individual level and made no note of any suspensions or sanctions that will follow in the wake of the incident."
