The joys of playing in a stadium owned by the City

PSU might run into scheduling conflicts with the Portland Timbers who have first dibs on stadium dates and don't want football lines on the field if they were to host a MLS playoff game the last weekend of the PSU regular season.

PSU had hope to move their final game to Friday night to get some additional exposure when the Ducks and Beavers aren't playing.

It was dedicated as a "football-only" facility and no markings other than for football ever were supposed to be put on the field - even temporary markings. It remains a point of contention.

We have a stand-alone soccer stadium and a separate (AstroTurf) field hockey facility, but none for lacrosse. Lacrosse ends up on the FH field when it conflicts with football practice or if snow has to be cleared. The soccer snobs would NEVER allow anything else on their precious Oaks Stadium grass.

Certain circumstances trump all else, of course . . .

Ugh. Turf lined for soccer, lacrosse and football *AND* a track around it.

I guess some schools prefer to be mediocre at a bunch of things rather than do well at specific things?

Hockey has action with a puck flying, people getting checked in the boards and goals scored, where soccer is nothing but a bunch of passing, players diving acting like they are hurt and games ending 0-0 or 1-0. Soccer is extremely boring.

The only difference is scoring, which is just a function of the size and speed of the ball relative to the goal and goalie vs. the puck in hockey. The soccer ball also flies through the air.

And I doubt that full contact body checking in ice hockey has any significant additional impact on the game over slide tackles in soccer. It's just the number of goals. Plenty of hockey games go into the books as ties, as well.

The Timbers have over 10,000 people on the waiting list for season tickets. They sell out the 22,000 seat stadium every time they open the doors, no matter what the game is.

Portland State football averaged 5,148 last year, which would not have been the highest average for an NCAA soccer team (despite NCAA soccer being a fall back option for most players).

So, the Vikings can deal and be happy with what they get.

Was PSU's attendance better when they were one of the better teams in D-II?

I played soccer from 4th grade through high school and find it boring to watch. Hockey isn't my favorite, but at least the back and forth action is faster and there is usually more scoring and few games that end 0-0, 1-0 or 1-1 at the end of regulation.

NDSU plays on a city-owned stadium that's on campus... it's worked out pretty well for everybody.

It's much more convenient for UND and NDSU playing in city owned venues where they're not only the primary tenants but the only tenants with regularly scheduled events. I imagine an MLS or Arena League team moving into the Fargodome or Alerus would throw a pretty significant wrench into that convenience.

Do they have playoffs in arena football? Their web site only lists games until the end of July. We're planning to take in a couple of games now that Portland has a team.

Fargo had a CBA team the first 2 years the Fargodome was open.

As an outsider who lives in Portland. Move the games to Hillsboro stadium. It's a better venue anyway for the size of population that does up to PSU games.

I've checked out many World Cup games and I've gone to UNH games trying to like soccer. Sorry, but the game just doesn't do anything for me. For some odd reason though, I can tolerate women's soccer though. I guess their relative lack of size and speed makes their game more open and have more scoring chances. I also hate how a game can be decided on one penalty kick for a 1-0 victory. I'll take ice hockey any day, more scoring chances, more scoring, faster, the goalie has more impact on the game, penalty kicks are rare and usually don't decide games, power plays are usually balanced for each team, etc. I fully appreciate the great fitness and skill levels of the soccer players but it just doesn't resonate into an entertaining game to me.

I'd prefer UNH play men's lacrosse rather than soccer. They'd have a better chance of national success in men's lacrosse and there would be a Spring sport to generate some interest. IMHO, many football fans would attend and pay admission to watch men's lacrosse while most people don't attend free soccer games.

Soccer is definitely an acquired taste. I think if you grow up with it, you like it (either playing yourself of because your kid plays)...but it is pretty hard, especially in America, to convert people. Soccer is like a chess match so I can see why a lot of people would think it is boring.

I am not a huge fan, but I enjoy watching the national team play (men and women) and I always end up watching World Cup (kinda like the Olympics where there are all kinds of sports I don't really care about, but for 2 weeks every 4 years, I pay attention and cheer on the home team).

I would probably never sit at home and watch by myself, but I have a lot of fun going down to the local pub and watch a national team game on TV with the local American Outlaws fan club...those guys are so into the game, you can't help but get caught up in it...especially after 4 or 5 beers :)

As for city owned stadiums...when UTC built off campus in partnership with the city, it was clearly stated that the Mocs (football and women's soccer) always have priority, because it is first and foremost, the Mocs stadium.

Cripes, I saw more Premiere League matches end in draws (a staggering amount of them were nil-nil) than end with an actual winner and loser. Only drinking made it tolerable. And I can totally see why people would want to punch something, throw chairs through windows, and maybe flip over a car or two (although in Europe that isn't much of a challenge) after being subjected to that kind of abuse.

On the other hand, I do like World Cup soccer. Nationalism adds energy to almost any sport.

Last Sunday, an amateur soccer match in Brazil came to an unbelievably gruesome end when a referee was murdered by outraged fans. His head was then cut off and placed on a spike. The beheading was retaliation; the ref initially stabbed a player to death.
It happened in the Maranhão region of northeastern Brazil. Thirty-year-old Josenir dos Santos Abreu approached the referee, 20-year-old Otávio Jordão da Silva (pictured above) during a match to argue a call. Abreu reportedly threw a punch at da Silva, who then took out a knife he was carrying with him during the match, and stabbed the player. Abreu died of his wounds en route to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the player's friends and family invaded the pitch and attacked da Silva. They reportedly tied up the referee, beat him, stoned him, lynched him, and then quartered him. When they finished, they cut off his head and placed it on a stake in the center of the field.
So far, just one man, 27-year-old Luis Moraes Souza, has been arrested for the crime, and authorities are searching for two more. Valter Costa, the chief of police in Maranhão's town of Santa Ines, spoke in a statement. “Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact," he said. "We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.”
