View Full Version : North Dakota State versus the Sun Belt

Thought you guys might get some chuckles out of this thread on the Sun Belt Board.
http://csnbbs.com/thread-671566-post-10305739.html#pid10305739
What makes this particularly funny IMO is that Kansas State beat the brakes off of the best Sun Belt team in a game that was 34-3 before KSU let off the gas. Understand that I'm not knocking my team's new conference (for you folks that bash the Sun Belt, the league is ranked as the top non-AQ league in FBS xthumbsupx), I've just always been annoyed at the lack of respect that a lot of G5 fans show to the level of competition in the FCS.
They basically think Georgia Southern and App. State will be doormats for at least a few years because well Western Kentucky and Louisiana-whatever were totally FCS superpowers just like GSU and App and they struggled early in the Sun Belt. They don't think any FCS teams could possibly have the talent to match up with their top teams. It's funny how a lot of folks on the Sun Belt board change their tune about recruiting rankings because, well, there's just no way that App State and Georgia Southern could have the best recruiting classes in the conference as 24-7 sports says they do in their composite rankings. xlolx
In a way, I do sort of feel like we (GSU and App) are representing the FCS (at least for a season or two) in that we are basically taking rosters full of guys who signed on to play for FCS teams against established FBS teams. Maybe if GSU and App can finish in the middle of the pack coming off of disappointing seasons in the SoCon they will learn something.
Ok, well that was longer and more of a rant than I wanted it to be but there it is.

Good Lord! Sunbelt fans are delusional...always have been....to put that discussion in context..McNeese has NEVER lost to a member of the Slumbelch Conference....I think we're something like 6-0 against them...
Wins over ULM, ULL, FAU, FIU, and one of those Tennessee schools...Upper Tennessee, Lower Tennessee...something like that...Wait, it was MIDDLE Tennessee...Beat 'em like the stole something two years ago...
Our wins against them haven't been particularly close...38-17 over ULL..similar win over Middle Tennessee, FAU, etc....the closest they came to beating us was when we beat ULM 21-18....

Wow what a bunch of rubes. NDSU would have been at the top or nipping on the heels of one maybe two teams in that conference last year. What a joke.

Bull****, you guys would have RUN THE TABLE in that conference and it wouldn't have been close.

Make sure you skull bang them from here on out App State and GSU. Also, please don't turn into the arrogant assholes that they are in the FBS...

Do sunbelt teams ever even play top FCS teams? I can't recall any examples off the top of my head, but then I haven't paid that much attention to the sunbelt.
their fans might have delusions of grandeur, but it would seem that the coaches/ADs/whoever-schedules knows that more often or not, the sunbelt teams would be put into their place by the top FCS teams, so they avoid such games (plus the top FCS teams have tended to go for guarantee games at BCS schools, since the payday is better)

2012 McNeese State beat Middle Tennessee State. MTSU was either the co-champs or second-place team, can't remember.
In 2011 Indiana State ran Western Kentucky off the field. They were also one of the top teams (I think second place).
Again, I'm not knocking the SBC. It's not like there aren't some top MAC and CUSA teams that haven't foolishly scheduled good FCS teams and either got beat or more than they could handle.

The Sunbelt is judicious in how they handle FCS scheduling. They'll play them, but only if they think the FCS team is down. If you're on a roll? They won't schedule you, so there's absolutely NO chance that NDSU would get an invitation to come down to the belt, except from App or GSU (the real one...In Statesboro)....

One thing to keep in mind here folks: teams at the start of the season are not the same teams at the end of the season.
You really think the Western Kentucky team that lost to Indiana St would've done that well in the Sun Belt if they would've played like that the rest of the year? Don't lie to yourself. No, of course they wouldn't have. I doubt that Indiana St would've been able to beat Western if they would've played at the end of the year, especially with ISU being beaten up at that point by MVFC teams.

Every lower-level FBS league is like that. I'm sure Northern Illinois would not have agreed to play Eastern Illinois if they had known how good they were going to be this year.
Pretty sure Central Michigan didn't expect the slop beat out of them by some FCS transitional team called North Dakota State, either.

Let's spend some time counting the number of Sun Belt teams in the top 25 at the end of the year. ;)
We also got more than the one obligatory #25 AP vote the FCS champ gets.
17 points in the AP this year.

We either got a #8 vote, or several votes.

Sagarin rankings are garbage. You telling me NDSU is better than Wisconsin or Arizona State? NDSU's schedule was #130, Wisconsin #49, ASU #2. NDSU was the best in the FCS, but putting them ahead of Big 10 and Pac 12 teams with killer schedules and 4 losses that's pushing it. Their rating is 0.19 behind Ohio State...OHIO STATE!! True that NDSU is better than most (probably all) of the SB teams but to brag about Sagarin is going a little overboard.

ASU- 5 ranked FBS teams, NDSU ZERO ranked FBS teams. And yet ASU is ranked lower than NDSU? I know this will start a ***** fire and I have been warned to leave this alone, I will give you 344Johnson the common courtesy to answer your question. NDSU was the best in the FCS and could take down most of the teams in the lower FBS conferences, but I am just saying there is not enough information (the lack of playing FBS teams besides K-State) to rank them with the elite of the Big 10 and PAC 12.

Sagarin does a statistical analysis, not just the "eye test" as Darrel is doing. They look at all the matchups between all the teams and then spits out a predictor. It's not just how NDSU did against K State, its how NDSU did against UNI who beat ISU and how NDSU did against Towson who beat Fordham who had a FBS win.
It's complicated math Darrel. Not just 5>0

by itself, no. as part of a larger algorithm, yes.
Question for you or anyone else...what is the most accurate (if its possible) ranking system there is? Massey, Sagarin etc. With so many out there I don't know which ones are credible and which isn't. Kinda like ESPN's bracketology (for March Madness) who uses the first place teams in the mid-lower major conferences in their brackets instead of actually using RPI's and other stats.

None.
Algorithms, at best, can make arguments about past performances. They can NOT be used to predict future or hypothetical match-ups with any higher accuracy than flipping a coin.

Of course the fallacy of your argument here is that MSU "only" beat South Florida by ... whatever. The score doesn't matter the slightest to anything outside of that game, that week.
Every week, every game is a completely independent universe in (college) football. The exact opposite assumption is made by all "football statisticians", which is the reason that their work is complete bunk and rightly for entertainment purposes only.

This. To be blunt...B1G schools really don't scare me nearly as much as they should matchup wise. The SEC on the other hand.....
Load of pig manure.
OOOoooh...a bunch of basketball players that run 40 yards in a straight line with no equipment on slightly faster than the average DI college football player ..... booga booga!
At least B1G football student-athletes attend actual institutions of higher learning (Vanderbilt and Florida notwithstanding).

Didn't answer the question. You showed a schedule. That was it. Keep worshipping at the altar bro.

Good post. Agree, this year they would have competed well with anyone in the 15-25 range on a one game basis.

Sac St also lost to Cal Poly 42-7, while Texas Tech gave up 26 points to Kansas St and 23 to ASU. NDSU gave up 21 to K-State. If you prefer Transitive property over computer rankings that fine.
