I would love to do this but I have to be honest and say I would stink at it. As a matter of fact I think the only ones I would know are the "Fightin' Blue Hens" and a couple of other A-10 schools. :eek:

By mascots, I meant what is the nickname that the team is commonly refered to as - Not the name of the character that prowls the sidelines on Saturdays or the type of animal they might have to represent some otherwise intangible mascot (ex: Miami Hurricanes, not an Ibis).

Other examples:
Notre Dame Fighting Irish (not a leprechaun)
Penn State Nittany Lions
Alabama Crimson Tide (not an elephant)
Stanford Cardinal

Maybe I should have taken the Ralph-route. I actually was able to rattle off nicknames for all of them. Some I'm not sure about, and a few I know have more than one mascot, or are recent changes. So, if they're mostly right, Scout's honor I didn't look any of them up.

I've scored entries and sent PMs to all 19 entrants over the weekend.
1.0 points were awarded for each correct answer. I did award partial credit in some cases. No one has yet submitted a perfect 120. So far the scores have ranged from mid 30's to upper 110's. The average entrant scored 79.3

Just put mine in - I only went with the ones I was certain of and by my count I'm looking at 85 - just got killed on most of the IAAA (those without a real good b-ball team over the past 15 years) and the bad teams in the MEAC, SWAC, and Ohio Valley (the ones that never make the playoffs). Didn't see that partial credit was possible, I would've taken a few stabs at other ones I though I might be close on.

Sorry to echo this... but I-AAA are division one teams without football.

My bad, but I'm sure my view of these teams will only offend you as I really see them as definitely a peg lower than the scholarship IAA teams - it really is a different level of football, just not acknowledged as the NCAA has this silly rule about schools with DI basketball teams.

No need to, I've already seen LaSalle play, and will get Albany firsthand next year (although Albany has dreams of being a scholly program so they may eventually be a bit different than the current crop of non-schollies). LaSalle struggles to beat the bad DIII teams (Ursinus) on their schedule, and has lost to a few. In reality, the games I've seen Widner and Rowan play (good DIII) and are a better product. The only reason the vast majority of non-scholarship teams are listed as IAA is that to have a football program and still be DI in basketball (the bread and butter program of most if not all of these teams) they have to be at least IAA. Otherwise, most of these programs would be where they were prior to that NCAA rule change - they'd be in DIII. It's not meant as a knock to you personally, but that's what I see on the field.

Understood, but the product in the Pioneer and NEC is a little different than the product that La Salle and the MAAC is putting on the field.

Jim Harbaugh and his former NFL player staff have really breathed new life into a league that I feel is fun to watch, and on par with the mid-level teams of a couple of the scholarship conferences.

Drake plays two Gateway teams this year, after leading one Gateway team on the road for 3 quarters last year. I guess my proof will be if we can pull an upset :) Although, it is tough to replace 4 offensive lineman up front, as someone has to make holes for our Third Team AA running back.

Albany is supposed to have about 30 scholarship players on their roster by next year which places them slightly above West Chester. For good D-3 teams I certainly agree regarding Widener (Billy white shoes) and Rowan. But don't forget Wesley College and Salisbury U.

Trying not to hijack this thread, but it's hard to get too excited about Drake's near-win to a below .500 team in the Gateway in the first week of the season when two weeks after that Drake lost by double digits, at home, to an average at best DIII UW-Platteville team. And they weren't the only DIII team on the schedule in 2004. I have nothing against these schools, but unless they play to the same standards as the other teams classified as IAA (give out at least a minimum level of scholarships) to me, in my opinion, they are just DIII schools masquerading as DIAA schools, and in the process diminishing the value of IAA. If they want to fund schollies and play as real IAA's, they're more than welcome and I think it would be great. Otherwise, they're dragging us down - IMO of course.
