Skip to the 20 second mark for some good footage. He certainly brings the intensity our program needs. He was nationally known for a while but fell out of the spotlight- don't know why.
Really though, I'm rooting for Keeler. Tjeersdma would be great, but his age concerns me.

if KC actually went to Texas for the interview, it might have been his second ever visit to the state, He is very well spoken and will represent Sammy well, He was labeled a CEO type and not really and X's and O's guy, more of a get me some good transfer Jimmy and Joe type. But he sure is a likeable and personable guy and probably wont look that bad in a Cowboy hat and sunglasses either.. the problem I had with him was he was stubborn, every CAA team had his spread offense wired down but he refused to change, and he really got conservative towards the end of his tenure at Delaware.

Interesting field of candidates to say the least...
I was telling the SHSU faithful I talked to last week that Canales may be in the mix. Do not think he initially wanted a FCS head coaching job, but he seems to be a finalist for every low major FBS job and can't break through - probably needs tangible HC experience of some sort - and knew he'd have an interest in SHSU. Whether or not he gets the job is beyond me...
Two previous hires in football had prior made by current AD had head coaching experience (albeit both at D2 level). Not sure what to make of the situation. The AD does have familiarity with Wyatt, who was an assistant at Sam. That may give him some sort of leg up, but won't be making bets on this search process!

Terror, who do you think will be selected? Just from some of the things I have heard, it sounds like it might be Mel T.

I think Tjeerdsma is a step backwards for Sam. Sure he has done great things, but if you're still coaching at near 70, you better have a great record
i think Sam should take Wyatt...
i think the rest of the SLC hopes for Tjeerdsma or Keeler

So here is a question for you Bearkat fans in the know. How is the Fritz leaving and current coach search effecting the 2014 recruiting class? Have any recruits that have verbaled backed out? Maybe I missed it but when does SHSU expect to make the coaching decision?
Losing a good coach and the waiting game for a new coach stinks.

I believe that some of the coaches remained on staff and are actively recruiting. If they are being retained then they have a stake in the recruiting process.

1. Keeler - Most FCS experience. Stability - 2 programs in 28 years, impressive. Both of those programs had their best eras under Keeler. 8 National Championship appearances in 20 years. No-Brainer.
2. Wyatt - Impressive list of schools. Texas ties for recruiting could be helpful but he has never been a head coach. Question would be, how long would he even stay? Distant second.
3. Mel Tjeerdsma - Good candidate perhaps 8-10 years ago. Age shouldnt be an issue, but unfortunately it is. That is reality. 18-21 year olds, relating to a 67 year old coach. Seriously? The grind at this level is substantial. Just dont see it.
4. Scott Wachenheim - We can do better then this.
5. Mike Canales - Ditto.

That is accurate - SHSU has actually landed a few verbals since Willie Fritz left.

That's highly debatable. But regardless, best wishes to the candidates and SHSU.

No debate at all. Keeler made it to three national championships in eight years, but only won one of them, Tubby won three in nine years. 3 > 1.

Highly respected, but Tubby never won a title at the D-I football level for Delaware like Keeler did.

Not bad considering we don't have a coaching staff but it obviously has been affected.

Agree as well. It's more like 1 for 3 versus 1 for 2.
During his peak, Tubby was one of the most innovative coaches in the history of the game, who fielded some of the best Small College and D-II teams in the country. That said, he NEVER won a D-I championship on the field and only made it to one final. Raymond also only managed a single D-II championship on the field. The '71 & '72 Small College teams were absolutely dominant and their NC's shouldn't be discounted. That said, they weren't earned through the meatgrinder of a championship tournament but instead came as the result of polls.

It wasn't only about the championships though, he claimed the best era. There's no way you can make that argument.
Tubby: 1970-1979 = 94-23 (.803) with 3 national championships
Keeler: 2002-2011 = 80-46 (.635) with 1 national championship

Mel's a Hall of Famer. You can't argue the guy's success and there shouldn't be any drop-off from Fritz. Other than wondering about the longevity of his tenure (he'll be 73 when the next recruiting class graduates) and knowing that Southland schools will be recruiting against his age, MT seems like a reasonable choice for SHSU.

How do you not hire KC Keeler, the best FCS HFC candidate on the list? Wow, that would be a big miss by SHSU.
