CONWAY, S.C -- After being a Pro Bowl selection for this season, former Coastal Carolina All-American and current Carolina Panther Mike Tolbert added a second major honor to his resume as he was voted to the Associated Press All-Pro first team as a fullback.
Tolbert, in his second-year with the Panthers and a 2007 Chanticleer All-American, becomes the first player from a Big South member institution to be voted to the AP All-Pro team. In December, Tolbert led all fullbacks in fan votes with 419,966 to earn his first appearance in the NFL's Pro Bowl - joining former Presbyterian standout Justin Bethel this year as the Big South Conference's first two Pro Bowl selections.
Tolbert has scored a team-high seven touchdowns (five rushing and two receiving) for the Panthers, helping his squad to the NFC South Division Championship and second seed in this year's playoffs. Tolbert has rushed for 361 yards on 101 attempts while adding 27 receptions for 184 yards.
Tolbert played at Coastal from 2004-07, earning first team All-Big South honors in his final season along with his second team All-American honors. He averaged an impressive 6.03 yards per carry over his career (277 attempts for 1,670 yards) and he scored 21 rushing touchdowns, now third on the CCU all-time list.
Tolbert signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2008 and he played four seasons there. In 2012, he signed with Panthers.
Tolbert is one of six Chanticleers to play in the NFL since Coastal began the program 11 seasons ago (2003), joining linebacker Maurice Simpkins, safety Quinton Teal, quarterback Tyler Thigpen, wide receiver Jerome Simpson and cornerback Josh Norman.
