Listening to the Radio it appears that the attendance in Terre Haute for the UNI-InSU game is around 500 WITH THE BAND!!

Embarassing, InSU either needs to commit to football or go non-scholarship. They are single handedly bringing the Gateway down.

Wow, nice attendance for UNH. Is that a new record?

No. According to information in the Media Guide, the record is 20K in 1977 for the season ending game with UMass with the autobid to the D-II Playoffs on the line (UMass won to end UNH's two year hold on that bid). Capacity was much larger in those days. I've also seen newspaper clippings that listed attendance as 14,500 in the 1975 UNH-UMass game in Durham.

Interestingly, the 20K in 1977 probably had a similar number of SRO folks as yesterday based on the different capacities. With the new capacity of 7.5K, there were 5,542 SRO folks yesterday. And they announced at the 5th Quarter event that there were 5K students in attendance which was awesome -- almost 50% of the undergrad population!!!!

JMHO, but I sure hope that yesterday's crowd puts the new stadium effort over the top! That should be a very strong argument for anyone still having any doubts. I thought we might hear an announcement this weekend.

I pulled this off the clarion ledger's blog.

My question to David though is one that was posed on Sports Journal last night: The reported gate was 40K to 50K last night. Everyone knows that there were at least 57K present at last night's event. How are all of these people getting in free?! If they are not, who has control over the ticket count (gate) and where is the money going? Someone needs to look into this. We are shorted on the count every weekend. How is it that 10,000 people sneak into two gates every weekend. I'm not saying that anyone is stealing, but it doesn't take a Ph.D. to figure out that the numbers don't add up. Something is going on! It has been for years! All we are asking for are the correct numbers. http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blo...89134446189892

And what's even better is that our stadium only holds 15,000! Let's hope that two weeks from now (no offense Appy and Montana fans) the #1 ranked Redbirds will be hosting YSU to the tune of 20,000 fans in Hancock!

[disclaimer]This is just info and not meant as bragging although anytime something is posted about the Montana stadium it does seem like bragging.:smiley_wi

We're averaging 23,561 after 3 games. The stadium has 23,117 seats. It was announced on the 10 pm news last night that the University is looking at adding 4000 new seats to the east side. The diagram below has the last expansion marked. That was 4000 seats. So add that to the east side, possibly a second deck so that the boxes don't need to be relocated.

Sorry, but we'll have to agree to disagree. Put Murietta on ANY of those three teams, and they go a LOT farther, and are a LOT more dangerous. Murietta has had ***** to work with as far as talent around him going on 3 years. He's running for his life about 80% of the time, and still does incredible things. The one year they had a semblance of talent was his freshman year, and they won 8-9 games (don't remember). If NAU had been able to recruit any talent to go with his, they'd have been in the running every year.

I never feared Lulay or Meyers as much as I feared the general talent levels on those two teams. I FEARED Murietta, and I've seen him play in person a lot.

Perhaps - No way. While he is good he's not as good as Lulay, Ochs, or Meyers. And thats just in the last 2.

PDX: I've got to agree...not to mention that someone should be looking a little bit closer to home. In the last 15 years the most dangerous QB came not out of MSU, EWU, or NAU, but out of Missoula. I think we know of whom I write--Dave Dickenson was unstoppable for three straight years, leading the nation in total offense twice, once by over a thousand yards, and he had 5676 passing yards in his senior season, a total none of the above (all great QBs in their own right) even approached.

Now that is truly scary.

CrunchGriz---DD is exactly why in my original post I said ABOUT 15 years....I think Murietta is the best since DD. Just no talent around him. Dave obviously had a lot of talent to work with.

Maybe it's your Arizona conection or maybe it's the ladies in your avitar :smiley_wi clouding your judgement. Last year both Lulay and Meyer were ranked at least top 25 in all the draft rankings. I just checked, Murietta is ranked 68th in his class right now by NFL Draftscout and isn't in the top 50 on ESPN's Scout, although I realize he could move up. Like I think, as well as most draft experts (not that the're always right by any stretch), Murietta's good, but not as good as either Lulay or Meyer.

Newsflash: Being a good college quarterback does not always translate to the pro game.....think Ryan Leaf. And being an average college QB doesn't mean you won't make a splash in the NFL....think Tom Brady. Also, reread my posts....their (Meyers, Lulay) production is more about the talent AROUND them than their individual talent (que the EWU and MSU posters defending Lulay and Meyers---I think they're great QB's in their own right, guys). And it has NOTHING to do with my Arizona connection----I have an extreme dislike for NAU....just mad respect for their QB.

They finally estimated SUNDAY that it was over 50,000.
Still waiting on the official count.

Even the newscast around here was taking the Stadium Commission to the woodshed over that estimate.xlolx

We have gotten to the point of laughing at the stadium commission's count's a long time ago.xlolx

Well I guess it is official.

A Ticketmaster audit revealed that about 38,000 tickets were sold for last Saturday’s Southern University vs. Jackson State football game, JSU athletic director Bob Braddy said today.

Braddy said he was surprised by the low number, considering the 60,492-seat Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium appeared close to capacity for much of the game.

The state runs Memorial Stadium and JSU leases the facility on game days for a flat $15,000 fee or 7 percent of the ticket sales, whichever is higher.

“This is the reason I’d like to have our own stadium or have full control of Memorial Stadium,” Braddy said. “It’s hard to get a handle on some of these issues when there’s another party involved. I don’t think Memorial Stadium is out to get us, but we’re not happy with this arrangement.”

"We're giving as accurate of a count as we know how," Whatley said. "All the numbers have checked out between ticket sales and turnstile figures. I'm not saying a few people could go without being counted, but there are not errors in the thousands. All of our ticket salespeople have to log in and out of Ticketmaster, and their cash drawers have to match the tickets sold or they are docked the money they're missing. No one is lining their pockets."

Whatley said general admission seating on the Memorial Stadium bench seats can make perceived attendance look larger than actual attendance.

To have a capacity crowd, said Whatley, fans must sit shoulder-to-shoulder on the bleachers.

Without assigned seats, Whatley said fans spread out for comfort.

"Basically, every person is taking up about one and a half seats because they want space," Whatley said. "Do the math, and a 60,000-person stadium can look pretty full, but there's only 40,000 people in it. Plus, the bands have about 300 people and they're taking up sections for about 1,100 people."

J-State disputes crowd figures

Memorial Stadium's audited ticket numbers appear to be low
By David Brandt
[email protected]

A winning football team doesn't mean all is good for Jackson State fans.

With little to complain about on the field during their team's 5-1 start, Tigers fans have shifted their ire to the stands, saying attendance figures announced by Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium officials aren't accurate.

Memorial Stadium appeared near capacity during last Saturday's JSU-Southern University game, won by the Tigers 31-28 in double overtime. By halftime, fans filled the stadium except at the highest points of the 60,492-seat facility.

So when the Ticketmaster audit revealed about 38,000 tickets were sold, JSU athletic director Bob Braddy said he was stunned. Adding in the marching bands, complimentary tickets and football recruits, the final attendance figure of 40,000 to 41,000 closely matched the turnstile count given by stadium officials during the game. JSU officials released an estimated count of 50,000 to reporters covering the game.

"This is the reason I'd like to have our own stadium or have full control of Memorial Stadium," Braddy said. "It's hard to get a handle on some of these issues when there's another party involved. I don't think Memorial Stadium is out to get us, but we're not happy with this arrangement."

After three home games, JSU leads Division I-AA in average attendance, at 26,756 per game.

Memorial Stadium director Watt Whatley said the counts are accurate.

JSU rents the stadium, paying $15,000 or 7 percent of ticket sales, whichever is higher. General admission tickets are $22, $25 if purchased at the stadium on game day.

If 40,000 tickets were sold at $22 each, the stadium would make $61,600 and JSU $818,400.

Whatley said he has no incentive to announce a lower turnstile count than actual tickets sold. He also said accusations that stadium employees are under-reporting sales and then pocketing the money are false.

Braddy said he is exploring the possibility of going to reserved seating next season. He would not say if ticket prices for premium seats would increase under that plan.

"I would think tickets on the 50-yard line would be a little more valuable, but we haven't gone into all the details," Braddy said. "I do think reserved seating will give us a better idea of how many people are in the stadium."

Furor over perceived crowd undercount at JSU-Southern game unfounded

By Eric Stringfellow
[email protected]

COMMISSION OVERSIGHT

There also are other factors that suggest an undercount is unlikely, including the makeup of the five-member Stadium Commission.

Three of its members, James Covington, Clarence Johnson and Walter Reed, are JSU graduates. Lonnie Moore attended Alcorn State, and its fifth member, Dr. D.E. Magee Jr., is a graduate of historically black Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio.

Covington, the Stadium Commission's vice chair, said JSU and not the Stadium Commission is the entity that controls the tickets. "The tickets are sold on JSU's account with Ticketmaster," Covington said.

Sales are reconciled by stubs and the turnstiles, which are monitored by JSU, after factoring in those who enter the stadium through the pass gate.

The Stadium Commission's rent schedule is based on attendance. Covington said that makes a deliberate undercount counter to the Stadium Commission's financial interest and would be something that's nearly impossible for someone to execute.

And that includes Whatley.
