Good match up of contrasting styles.
Both defenses need to bring their 'A' games.

Not a prediction for the overall game but I REALLY don't see how EWU defense is going to deal with the size and speed of TU's running attack.

I don't think they will on defense. They will just try to run and gun on offense and pray that they end up with more points in the end.

EIUs is better than EWUs. EIUs offense is better than EWUs. Will be interesting to see what happens but Towson should be the favorite.

I would put it as a 3 Point EWU favorite due to homefield advantage being part of this. EWU has a very good quarterback and is also a Payton award nominee.

Don't have anything to sort out. Just we had some unfortunate injuries or we would be headed to Baltimore. But it just the way it works
Not a bad year for us, finish 3rd in the OVC and give a national 3rd seat a good battle with backups. 10 starters coming back on offense things are looking up for us.

No offense intended ... I just didn't understand your sentence and thought there were a few words missing. If you go back and reread it and don't understand my confusion, then my apologies. I thought and have posted on our forum that JSU was a great team that will be even tougher next year!

I was hoping for an Eastern vs. Eastern semifinal. I guess that I'll root for EWU as that would be an epic matchup of the last 3 FCS champions in Frisco.

I'm somewhat optimistic about this matchup, mainly due to the fact that this will be our third straight opponent whose main mode of attack is the pass. We have been improving on that area of defense gradually (especially after 1Q yesterday) and it will help not having to switch up the defensive scheme dramatically. Also we strangely seem to play better games on the road this season so that advantage of EWU will be somewhat negated, although the possible effects on the trip out to WA is uncertain since I think this may be the longest travel distance the program has ever had.

You may want to check our stats. Over the season, we are almost exactly 50/50 on rush vs pass attempts. And check out the ground production through the first two games of the playoffs. We certainly aren't a predominantly running team, like Towsen. Not that Towsen doesn't throw the ball. They seem to be 65/35 to me. We are more balanced, but our passing yards per attempt are a lot greater than per rush, so people often think of EWU as a pass only type of team. And the fact, we were practically pass only in 2011. But have been getting more balanced since then.

That's fine...as long as we have more points on the board when the game ends. Offenses often have pretty solid production against us. Unfortunately, defenses don't do good enough at stopping ours. That will really be the key for them.
EWU usually puts up solid numbers on offense, and does just enough on defense to win the game. Who's defenses get more stops and/or turnovers will likely dictate who wins this game. If EWU shoots themselves in the foot again like tonight, Towson will likely come out on top. If they can be more disciplined and VA is focused and in his element, I believe they will score more points.

Ummm, ok. Where did I disrespect Towson? West is a beast! And nothing but respect for all four of the teams that are left.
And it won't surprise me to see Towson as the favorite in this game in the odds and on AGS. This is the semi's. Any of these teams can win.
That being said, I'm fine with people discounting EWU. Seems they are their best when that happens. And honestly, this last game was one of the worst I've seen them play...and they still won. If they play well, they will be dang hard for Towson to overcome. Once again, I predict they will be a lot more polished in their next game, and win at home.

Probably shouldn't go off one game. His season performance has been on par with Jimmy Garoppolo's. Fewer pass yards, same number of TDs, couple more picks, higher efficiency but has 500 rush yards. In general pretty close all around. They certainly look completely different in play, but both have played consistently to Peyton award levels. He would only need 3 TDs on saturday to tie the all time FCS season record.

I won't ever be thankful for injuries (unless Nickels injured his vajayjay), because I'd much rather watch my team beat opponents at full strength. Regardless, those injuries were counter balanced by very uncharacteristic turnovers, two of which took 14 points off the board for EWU. So it's you who should be thankful that JSU didn't get boat-raced.

That's the biggest farce of an argument possible. JSU had a great team and I'm not saying they wouldn't have won without injuries, but to say you would have won without those injuries is just plain ignorant. It was 21-21 when the QB went down. EWU had already left 14 points on the field with turnovers, and has a history of making crucial adjustments at the half. May I remind you they were tied with SDSU the week before at half and then proceeded to outscore them 27-3? I personally wanted Jenkins to come back because of this very reason. I didn't want people like you blaming EWU's win on injuries. It's just a weak argument.

I remember a team sustaining a season ending injury to a key player in a quarterfinal game. Tough to lose a 1700yd rusher who is your homerun hitter, but you get it done and win a NC regardless. If you don't, then its back to the drawing board.
Of course the Bison will tell you it was all a conspiracy, but as they say, the ruling on the field stands.

We had two turnovers which took 14 off our board too plus EWU convert one into 7. EWU was advantaged in the TOs. You should be thankful we didn't start the game with our halftime adjustment.
I can make as many excuses for my team as you can your not performing to your or my expectations. No idea who would have won (without the injuries) but these team could play 100x and neither is going to boat race the other. EWU isn't head and heal or any above JSU in talent.

xcoffeex We've strayed so far from a relevant topic. I sure am excited for the semifinalists from Towson University. They got a great 10pt win this weekend, so I canimagine the excitement they have moving forward. Got to watch the first half of their effort against EIU. I was concerned at first, but they made the adjustments necessary to play at a final four level for sure. They seem to understand that in the playoffs you have to step up and get it done even if you face some adversity. Someteams are just built to withstand a deep playoff run, and others aren't.

I think Towson has a chance here. EW d is weak, Towson should be able to bully that dline and get some great runs. Towson d isn't great but if containment of EW is possible, Towson might have a chance to keep it close. My heart wants Towson to win this one, but EW is strong. I see a lot of folks dis-counting EWU in this one, and I'm fine with that since we didn't play very well yesterday. One thing that has not been mentioned that should give EWU a little bit of an edge: Playoff experience. EWU has made the semi's 3 of the past 4 years and has played in the Championship game as well. That post-season experience is valuable. I also think playing at home gives us a slight edge, as Towson will be playing back to back road games.
Ultimately I think this game will come down to who turns the ball over less. It's very unlikely Adams has another performance like he did yesterday, or that we turn the ball over as much.

Yeah, guess you're not very good at math either. Eagles are giving up 176 total rushing per game. Don't know how that equates to "continually allowing 300+ yard rushers". But OK, you gotta throw crap our way because your wins against the Big Sky teams are all you have to hang your hat on. Here's another atta boy for you. Good job, Nickels, for your part in beating the Eastern Eagles!xthumbsupx
That being said, the other thing that people fail to consider, including the ESPN analysts, is that somehow TOP matters to us. We are not trying to win the TOP battle. Instead, we are quick strike, which generally puts the opposing offense on the field more often, allowing them to generate more stats against our defense. The stats make our defense look worse than they are because of our style of play.

Why would anybody discount Eastern Washington? Towson has to fly across the country for this one. If it snows, we should have a bit of an advantage but EWU should be favored. Then again, everybody is good at this point and it really becomes about not beating yourself. Towson did not play a great game against Eastern Illinois, getting down 14-0. I don't think we've come close to hitting our peak yet.

I've watched about a half dozen of their games this year and last Saturday wasn't indicative of Vernon 'Lil Shooter' Adams ability. In this game, and the Portland State game, he was a bit more tentative that usual. Unlike the performance vs JSU, typically he throws up those jump balls and does not get picked. In part that is largely due to a slew of very talented receivers (Kupp gets all the press but there are at least two more just as good). Yet after watching Adams successfully do it (throw up what appears to be might be a jump ball) all season I'd have to say the kid has the knack to consistently make the improbable work. So I don't attribute all of it to the receiving corp. Adams is also a danger when he scrambles. Though as the season progressed it appears the coaching staff has tried to rein him in on that. As a result he's spending more time in the pocket these days (sometimes too much time). On occasion he makes other bone head sophomore mistakes such as his picks. Yet all in all, Adams is a VERY gifted and dangerous QB. Considering what he has done he certainly deserves to be in the running for the Payton award.

Frankly, I don't care how bad Adams was last week against a pretty good Jackson State. What counts is how he will do this week against a very good Towson. And the same goes for the EWU defense. Each game is different. Adams has proved he is a winner. We know that EWU is a winner, and we know that Towson is a winner. Who will win? I don't know. But I'll be watching. I think it will be a great game.
Cocky ... your guys lost the game. Injuries are a big part of the game, and a great team will get through them and still win. And I guarantee that the whoever the winner is in Fisco, TX, they will have suffered several injuries during the season and they will probably have several star players that started the season not playing at the end. It is time for you to wait for next year, just as I am with my Mustangs.

It wasn't a fluke you that you guys won a couple of playoff games. Good athletes on both sides of the ball and your strengths were a tough matchup for us. But let's not get too carried away with the self pity over one game here. After all, PSU the 9th best team in the BSC, was a missed PAT from taking us to overtime.

And, yes, VA would sometimes rather fling it up than take a sack or throw it OB, but he has a nearly supernatural ability to get off an accurate throw milliseconds before getting clobbered. It's possible that EWU may not be able to handle Towson's running game, but most of EWU's harshest critics appear to me to simply be BSC haters or sore losers, even if they didn't lose to EWU. (I mean you, SHSU). It's kind of pathetic hanging around rooting for the team to lose that advanced further in the playoffs than you. Regardless of the outcome, EWU has represented the Big Sky magnificently, and so have their fans on this board, for the most part. Good luck Eagles!xthumbsupx

But you didn't play good or it would have been a blowout. Or maybe EWU isn't as dominate as EWU fans would like to believe. That where the pity comes from.
I will give you credit you haven't been one to make excuses for not winning big. Just not use to a winning team making excuses for playing close game and still trying to imply their opponent sucked.
Dominant.

EWU was in about the same position but they didn't get their blowout of a 3rd place OVC team.
But in eyes of some EWU fan and you their turnovers were their fault ours were caused by EWU? I would argue with you they were all good defensive plays but Big Sky knows little about D.

Who wants to fly me out for the game? I'm fairly cheap. All I ask for is airfare, a ride from the airport, a clear spot on the floor to sleep and a pancake breakfast before the game. I'll be a designated driver for you if you want to get all liquored up. I can find a way back to the airport post game.
Kalm, I'm looking at you.
Considering you use to protect a certain quarterback during your playing days, maybe you might want to ask Rob Ambrose if there are any extra seats on the charter to Washington. You could always room with Mr. C on the trip. There were a few extra seats on last week's charter.

I understand we loss but if were pretty good so is EWU who will go against a "real" good Towson. If a team can't roll a 3rd place OVC team you are pretty good at best. Of course the only reason EWU didn't roll us was their TOs, I guess that not part of the game like injuries? If so I wish we could have our back too.
Semantics. You can talk margin of victory and what-ifs all you want, at the end of the day, only thing that matters is the W. The 2010 EWU team wasn't dominant, but they found ways to win... a lot of them close games in which EWU was either tied or behind in the 4th quarter.

Towson is a very good team. EWU is predicted to win by 3, but being at home, that is really just saying they are even.
Towson is very solid on both offense and defense, and they have accomplished that playing very solid competition. Regardless of what Vegas says, I really see Towson as the favorite in this game, and EWU will have to play near perfect football to pull out the win in this one. Not that that shouldn't be expected at this round in the playoffs.
Watching EWU in the playoffs, I think they have some really good things going for them. I think the defense really has been doing a great job of making second half adjustments and just shutting opponents down in the third quarter. The running game has really been rolling as well. The biggest concern for me is that Vernon Adams looks a little too tight. In the Oregon State game, he played very loose. There wasn't an expectation to win. And so, he seemed to play very relaxed. I felt the same way throughout a lot of the season. He was just out there having fun. But especially the last game, he looks like he is trying too hard not to lose, and he doesn't seem to have the same confidence and relaxed demeanor I've seen him display in prior games. Maybe it's just me, and I'm reading too much into it. I haven't seen similar comments from anyone else. But that's just the sense I've gotten. If VA plays like he did most of the season, it should be a great game for all to watch, win or lose.

It's been odd the last 2 games (even the last 3 of the regular season), the running game has been HUGE and there seems less pressure on VA's shoulders. I think he does better under pressure.

It could also be a rhythm thing. We have several speeds and it seems like at Oregon State we were playing at our fastest temp for much if that game.

The problems defenses have faces against EWU is coverage, are you stacking the box to stop the run our putting more players back to defend the pass. The last 2 games teams have chosen the latter and Forte has had huge games.

Agreed. And your DB's were really solid with open field tackles against the run and bubble screens last week. That being said, your 87th in FCS in passing yards allowed so it looks like some plays can be made there.
And the crazy (and very, very frustrating) thing is, our secondary may be the most individually-talented unit on the entire defense. Both CBs (one homegrown, and one a transfer from Georgia) are next-level prospects, and the young pups (Donnell Lewis and especially Christian Carpenter, a great athlete who will be an All-American before it's all said and done IMO) are very fast and talented and getting better every week.
Our issues against the pass have been twofold: schematically and lack of a consistent pass rush outside of Delaire. If you saw the EIU game, you would have noticed how we played a soft zone or off-man the first two defensive possessions - and Garoppolo led them right down the field to two TDs. Then - finally!! - we made an in-game adjustment and went to more press man-to-man on the edges, and dared the EIU receivers to beat our CBs deep in the snow. And lo and behold, after TDs on their first 2 possessions and a 14-0 lead, EIU went punt, downs, punt, punt, fumble on the next 5 - as we roared back to take a 21-0 lead - before they were able to score again (and then only after we fumbled the 2nd half KO and gave them the ball on our 36 yard line).
If they're put in position to make plays, and if they're not hung out to dry covering for 4, 5+ seconds, our secondary can be very good. Two big ifs, however.

I was thinking Towson, and still dunno. I think the weather had much more to do with the win last week, and with the extra day to prepare I can't think it hurt, however if there is a clean track and light wind I think Adams does what he wants. I think this is going to be the game to watch.
I think it could come down to who has the ball last. And games like tend to lean towards experience and I think honestly that Towson has that edge. Being a fan of FCS football I just want to see a great game. Being a Bison fan I'm torn as to who I want to see. Back to Back CAA wins would be cool, but a win over EWU would be a nice end of career game for the seniors. Good luck to both teams.

But your 0-2 against SHSU in Cheney but somehow your 9-1 since 2010? For the record I like EWU in this one but I also liked EIU and SELA last week. There was just a smattering of snow on the field when Eastern Washington worked out at 11 a.m. If it was a Friday game, like last week's Eastern Illinois-Towson game, it would have been maybe worse conditions than the quarterfinal game. The challenge will be the clear the field for Saturday's 11 a.m. local start time.

I mis-counted. We are 8-1 in the playoffs, thus far, since 2010, with the only loss being to SHSU. What are your questions?
My bad....I was thinking EWU was in the group of big sky teams we beat in 2011.

Mr. C and Towson pulled into town last night. It was like 17 degrees, but a refreshing 17 degrees after several hours on a stuffy plane. It is suppose to snow on Friday, beginning at about 11 a.m. local time and should be snowing for the Towson walk-through. Weather is suppose to be better for Saturday's game. I can't wait to see the Tabasco Turf at Roos Field this afternoon.
Enjoy your time in quaint little Cheney. You'll be treated to a very exciting offense from EWU. xnodx

Ever since December of 2010, I have really disliked EWU, Cheney and everything about that program. I have never been more bitter about a loss than that one. That said, I am really going to be rooting for the Eagles tomorrow. Not because I dislike Towson. In fact, I really like their type of football and what they bring to the field.
It is just that I want revenge. I want these seniors to be in a position to embarrass those stupid eagles on a neutral field. (Well, I don't think it'll be so neutral, actually.) I want, more than anything I've wanted in awhile, to see my team completely tear apart another team. Tonight, I was actually feeling bad for UNH and was kinda glad the third string didn't stop them on that last drive. In Frisco, against EWU, I want them to not let up on the gas, to not burn the clock. I want them to run up the score. I want absolute and complete humiliation. I want to set their program back 10 years.
Go Eagles!!!

BTW - To the Towson fans going to Cheney for the game...
If you have never been to the Pacific Northwest before and Cheney is your first real experience, let me personally apologize to you in advance for the ****ty atmosphere and the lack of a welcome that you will receive at Poos Stadium and the City of Cheney. Most of us in the Northwest are good people, easy going, and have a way of making visitors feel really welcome. Generally, people want to come back or move here. Unfortunately, you're in Cheney and people hate themselves there. They hate that you're spending your money there, that you're tailgating there, that you even made the effort. It is hands down the worst experience that I have ever had going to a game, and it is not just because we lost but rather how we were treated the whole time we were in that ****hole.
Towson fans, do yourself a favor and stay in Spokane, eat/drink in Spokane and get out as soon as you can. Don't bother investing a nickel in Cheney or that university. They don't want you or your money, sorry to say.

The field has been mostly cleared, though the remanent of snow on the surface is cutting the glare of the Tabasco Turf. It was sunny about an hour ago, but now fog is creeping in and the lights have been turned on. EWU had sold 6,000 tickets as of yesterday and should get a decent walk-up crowd. It was in the teens when we left the hotel in Spokane this morning and is currently 19 degrees in Cheney, with a high of 29 predicted. Towson coach Rob Ambrose, a former Tiger QB, is throwing pass routes to some team personnel on the field right now, while a fw players from both teams are out loosening up.
