Coastal Carolina's run to the FCS National Championship came to an end Saturday at North Dakota State.
#1/1 NORTH DAKOTA STATE 48, #11/11 COASTAL CAROLINA 14 | BOX SCORE (http://www.goccusports.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2013-2014/game15.html)
Coastal Carolina (12-3) had another record-setting year under second year head coach Joe Moglia, but the two-time defending NCAA Division I Football Champion North Dakota State Bison (13-0) raced out to a 31-0 lead and cruised to a 48-14 victory Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the FCS playoffs. The game was played before 18,219 at the Fargodome and before a national television audience on ESPN.
The Chanticleers have won Big South Championships in both years of Coach Moglia's time on the CCU sideline and, after winning the program's first playoff game last season, Coastal reached the quarterfinals for the first time.
Alex Ross paced the CCU offense, completing 13-of-26 passes for 185 yards and a score. Matt Hazel was his top target, catching eight passes for 91 yards and a 20-yard TD. All-American candidate Lorenzo Taliaferro only gained 58 yards, but averaged 4.8 per attempt, while catching two passes for 39 yards. Defensively, senior Mike McClure closed his career by tallying a career-high 15 tackles, while Imir Sanders had 11 stops and Quinn Backus added eight.
Coastal's defense started strong, as senior Dominique Whiteside recorded a sack on the second play of North Dakota State's opening drive. However, quarterback Brock Jensen broke off a 39-run to the CCU 14. The Chanticleer defense buckled down to force a 26 field goal, made by Bison kicker Adam Keller for an early 3-0 lead.
