Yes, he QB the Dawgs to their win over Indiana State in the last game of the season, only four days after having the pin in his formerly broken hand remove--the hand was heavily wrapped, but his presence was the winning factor--

Washington To Play in NFLPA Collegiate Bowl
Courtesy: Appalachian State Sports Information
Release: Monday 01/13/2014 (ET)

BOONE, N.C. — Former Appalachian State University wide receiver Tony Washington (http://www.appstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&ATCLID=204766572&DB_OEM_ID=21500) has accepted an invitation to play in this week’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. The prestigious all-star game is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN2.

Washington will suit up for the American team, coached by former Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green, and be the second Mountaineer in the three-year history of the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl to participate in the game. Defensive back Demetrius McCray tallied an interception, a forced fumble, a pass break-up and a game-high-tying five solo tackles to help lead his National team to a 34-0 win over the American squad in last year’s contest. McCray went on to be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Washington’s invite comes after an impressive senior season in which he led the Southern Conference with 939 receiving yards, en route to first-team all-conference recognition. He finished his career ranked eighth in school history with 139 receptions and ninth with 1,837 receiving yards. He is also Appalachian’s all-time leader in kickoff-return yardage (1,289) and average (23.4 yards per return).

Despite being in only its third year of existence, the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl has already become one of college football’s premier postseason all-star games. Last season, peak television ratings for the ESPN2 broadcast of the second-annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl surpassed the East-West Shrine game and bested the Senior Bowl in overall impressions. More importantly, the game and the week of practice leading up to the contest are attended by nearly 100 professional football scouts.

Washington is the second Mountaineer to participate in an all-star game this postseason. On Dec. 21, quarterbackJamal Londry-Jackson (http://www.appstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&ATCLID=204766567&DB_OEM_ID=21500) played in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he helped lead his South squad to a 16-13 win over the North.

Washington and Londry-Jackson are the ninth and 10th Mountaineers to participate in postseason all-star games in the last four years. Daniel Kilgore (currently a member of the San Francisco 49ers), Mark LeGree and D.J. Smith (Carolina Panthers) all played in the 2011 Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Classic, Brian Quick (St. Louis Rams) participated in the 2012 Senior Bowl, Travaris Cadet (New Orleans Saints) and DeAndre Presley (Carolina Panthers) played in the 2012 Battle of Florida and Jeremy Kimbrough (Washington Redskins) joined McCray in postseason action last year as a participant in the Raycom College Football All-Star Classic.

Spencer scores all-star TD
By The Associated Press
CARSON, Calif. — In four years at LSU, J.C. Copeland earned a reputation for being a bruising fullback that often led running backs into the end zone. On Saturday afternoon, Copeland showed he can get the ball in the end zone on his own just fine, too. Copeland ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns to earn MVP honors, Stanford running back Anthony Wilkerson ran for 67 yards and a touchdown and Team National used a second half surge to beat Team American 31-17 in the third annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. “You picture it in your mind before you play the game and it just happened,” Copeland said. “It’s an amazing thing that I was put in a position to do it and I took advantage of it.” Copeland, a 6-foot-1, 270-pound former defensive tackle, never had a multitouchdown game in 42 career games at LSU. “We originally didn’t have him in a running back position, he was always leading as a blocker,” said National coach Dick Vermeil, formerly the head coach of the Chiefs, Eagles and Rams. “When we saw him on the field, we said when we get down the field and it’s inches to go, we might as well give it to the 270-pounder.” Vermeil has now guided the National to victory in all three installments of the game. Former Vikings and Cardinal coach Dennis Green guided the American side. Led by Copeland and Wilkerson, the National ran for 163 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Copeland provided all of the National’s scoring in the first half, running for both of his short touchdowns in the second quarter. The bruising scoring runs were his only two carries of the game. “I really have to credit my O-line,” Copeland said. “I told them I needed one yard and I’ll put it behind y’all and they did their thing.” Hawaii quarterback Sean Schroeder completed 13 of 17 passes for 138 yards and a 15-yard swing pass to McNeese State’s Dionte Spencer for a score late in the second quarter to force a tie at halftime.
