This story has taken an amazing twist. It was sad to begin with, but this has hit the sports world. Life is just ironic and sad sometimes.

They are talking about it on CNN right now. The loss of altitude in the small time frame is amazing.

RIP Corey, Yankee or not, you were a great ballplayer

He had just purchased a new Cirrus--$200k airplane and was with a flight instructor. Sounds like he may have been in over his head with eerily similarity of Thurman Munson's crash in 1979...Despite the tragic loss of life, I would not consider him a 'great' ballplayer. He was a journeyman with 7 teams in 9 years. Usually could be counted on the keep the team within striking distance and get to the 6th inning.

There is no way he had enough hours logged since the offseason to be flying that plane that close to Manhatten. The Instructor should have known better. : smh :

Very true, you never know when your time is up. It kind of reminds of a guy in Wilmington about 15 years ago. He was sitting in his car (Rockford Park area) reading a newspaper and a large oak tree fell right on top of him. Needless to say, he was killed instantly.

Or this past spring or early summer when a determined to be rotting oak crashed down at a picnic table at a girl scout camp in NJ and killed a girl or two...

I don't mean to be insensitive, but isn't ESPN going waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overboard on the coverage of this thing?
I turned on the TV after work and they were talking about it on Sportscenter. 30 minutes later, they were still talking about it, and had covered nothing else. I turned the TV off for about 30 minutes, then turned on ESPN about 15 minutes before the games came on, and they were still talking about Lidle. And all the Yankee interviews? He was a Yankee for what, two months?
It really makes me wonder how ESPN would have covered Clemente's crash...

Its all about ratings! And they knew this would generate viewers! Basically, WTF would care about all the prelims on that nights MLB games except for zombie fans of those four teams??

And we all know how ESPN goes overboard with Yankees coverage anyway.

??? What because he was only a Yankee for 2 months he's unimportant? Would more coverage be justified if it was say...Jorge Posada whos been a Yankee for numerous years?

I doubt if he was with any other team. ESPECIALLY a west coast team they would have covered it as much. ESPN or CNN!
Overblown coverage of a small, tragic accident

From things I read and heard, and this latest article that was just posted here, seems Lidle was one of the nicer guys in baseball, a true shame.

When his wifes plane landed in California family, police, MLB officials and a priest were all waiting for her. Can u imagine seeing that coming off the plane, She prolly knew before she even got to them.

No, because he was a Yankee for only two months, I don't understand why they feel that have to interview the entire Yankee clubhouse and front office for their comments. Talk to his former teammates on Oakland or Philly, where he played for two full years each. They know him a lot better than Brian Cashman and Alex Rodriguez do.

When ur around people all the time, u can get close pretty quick, surely he and his yankee teammates became close even if in a short period of time, Plus he and Jason Giambi played together in High School.
Members of Oakland and the Mets also spoke of him. As for Philly, with there season ending much sooner the players were all gone, where as NY just ended and players were still getting things together and were still around to be interviewed.
Also for Philly, there was no love lost between them and Lidle when he was traded and both he and his former teammates took shots at each other.

A-Rod has been there two years and no one has gotten close to him yet!

"Arthur Rhodes, what are your thoughts about Lidle's death?"
Now *THAT* would have been interesting.
Hell, watching a Holiday Inn commercial would have been much more interesting than hearing Brian Cashman talk about a guy who he sounded like he had talked to twice in his life.

ESPN needs to stop with the continuous coverage of the situation. Cory's own father found out on ESPN because those d!cks decided to cover it all freakin' day. Even Cory's wife and child found out on a TV when they got off a plane on the west coast. ESPN needs to have some respect and lay off it.
