Charleston Southern head coach Jamey Chadwell and Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia were named among the finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award for National Coach of the Year, The Sports Network announced today. In addition, Gardner-Webb defensive lineman Shaquille Riddick was added the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List.
In directing CSU to a program-record 10-win season, Chadwell has orchestrated a dramatic turn-around in his first year at the helm. Wins over The Citadel, Appalachian State and then No. 3 Coastal Carolina have highlighted a campaign that has seen the Bucs achieve the highest national ranking (No. 12 in the FCS Coaches Poll; No. 13 in The Sports Network Poll) in school history while also setting a Big South record with six road victories. Chadwell has helped established an identity for a CSU team among the national leaders in time of possession (1st), third-down defense (5th), rushing offense (12th) turnover margin (15th) and scoring defense (16th). He took over a program that struggled to a winless season in 2011, and went 5-6 a year ago.
For the second time in two years, Moglia has been named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award. Voting for the Eddie Robinson Award will reflect only regular-season results and will be conducted by a national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries. The winner will be announced at The Sports Network FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation to be held Dec. 16 in Philadelphia.
Moglia (18-6 overall and 9-2 in Big South games in two seasons) has led Coastal to a pair of Big South titles and the Chanticleers have been ranked among the nation's top 25 all season, climbing to a pro-gram and Big South best ranking of third for three weeks. Coastal is one of six teams in the FCS with 10 wins this season, posting a 10-1 mark overall.
Meanwhile, Riddick has been added to the prestigious Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, which is presented annually by the Sports Network to the top defensive player among the 122 FCS schools nationally. Former Gardner-Webb All-America defensive end Brian Johnston was a finalist for the award in 2007 as a senior, finishing ninth in the final voting.
Riddick, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound All-America candidate, has enjoyed a stellar season through 11 games. He has registered 67 total tackles and set a new Big South single-season record with 8.5 sacks. He ranks second in the nation with 19.0 tackles for loss, and leads the nation in negative yardage recorded with 109. Riddick also has established a new career-high with 17 quarterback pressures.
The Akron, Ohio, junior has helped Gardner-Webb to 3-1 record against ranked teams in 2013, including a win this past Saturday against #12/13 Charleston Southern by a 27-10 score. In the three wins, Gardner-Webb has allowed only 20 combined points (6.7 per game) and has limited two of those three opponents to less than 20 yards rushing. In the four games against ranked opponents in 2013, Riddick has totaled 28 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss (minus-52 yards) and 3.5 sacks (minus-27 yards). He also has nine pressures in those four games.
In his second full season as a starter, Riddick has recorded new career-high totals in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss. He leads the Big South Conference in sacks and has helped Gardner-Webb perform a tremendous turnaround defensively in 2013. The Runnin’ Bulldogs rank No. 6 nationally in team total defense (296.4 ypg), 21st in rushing defense (121.1 ypg) and 14th in passing defense (175.3 ypg). GWU also ranks No. 8 in third down conversion defense and No. 9 nationally in first downs allowed.
