CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty quarterback Josh Woodrum (Roanoke, Va.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Gardner-Webb linebacker Chad Geter (Irmo, S.C.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the final week of the regular-season. Runnin’ Bulldogs’ placekicker/punter Jordan Day (Marvin, N.C.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Presbyterian College linebacker Ugonna Akoh (Athens, Ga.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Woodrum was responsible for 279 yards of offense and four touchdowns in leading the Flames to a 56-14 win at No. 16/18 Charleston Southern and claim a share of the Big South championship. He was 23-of-28 passing ( =82.1 percent) for 239 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 40 yards and a score. Woodrum opened the game with a 13-yard touchdown run, then connected on TD passes of 18 yards and three yards to give Liberty a 21-0 advantage at halftime. He tossed a six-yard touchdown pass to opening the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Geter registered a career-high 12 total tackles -- including 11 solo stops, and broke up a pass in Gardner-Webb’s 20-13 win at Presbyterian College. He had six solo hits in a dominant first half that saw GWU limit the Blue Hose to just 49 total yards in opening a 13-0 lead at the break. Geter’s performance helped Gardner-Webb to its seventh win of the season -- the program’s highest win total since 2003.
Day connected on both field goal and PAT attempts to finish with eight points at Presbyterian, and averaged 42.1 yards on 11 punts in helping the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a seven-point win over the Blue Hose. His second quarter field goals from 26 and 23 yards gave GWU a 13-0 lead at halftime. He also pinned PC inside the 20-yard line four times and had long punts of 56 and 59 yards. Day’s hang time on a 44-yard punt late in the third quarter led to a muffed catch, which GWU converted into a touchdown and 20-7 advantage.
Akoh tied the Big South single-game record with 5.0 tackles-for-loss against Gardner-Webb, and finished the game as the Blue Hose’s top tackler with eight total stops (six solo), a career-high 1.5 sacks and forced a fumble that was recovered by PC.
