Marcus Cox picked up his record 6th SoCon Freshman of the Week award today.

Marcus Cox set or tied five Appalachian State records in the Mountaineers’ 48-27 win over Western Carolina on Saturday. Cox rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns in the win and added two receptions for 19 yards and a score. His 215 yards on the ground were a new school record, as were his four total touchdowns. The Dacula, Ga., native also set single-season freshman records as he closed the year with 1,250 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns. Cox closed the season with 1,809 yards from scrimmage, tops among freshmen at Appalachian State.

One of the very, very bright spots on this year's App team. He's going to continue being a fun one to watch the next three seasons.

In all seriousness, I'm feeling pretty good about getting at least one of the above. Most likely Kupp for the Rice Award, although I think the other two have very strong cases. All things considered, Garoppolo and Adams are pretty even, IMO. Both have the same number of TD's, although Garoppolo has two more through the air, and Adams two more on the ground. Garoppolo has roughly 400 yards more passing, but Adams has roughly 450 more yards rushing. Adams has also led the FCS in efficiency all season, and has a better completion percentage.

There may be some who deserve it equally (haven't seen 'em all play, so how would I know), but I am certain that none deserve the Rice Award more than Mercer's QB, John Russ. I won't requote his stats except to add that he also caught a long TD pass last Sat...throwback to QB, but not the 'standing alone in the end zone' type. It was the 'great catch/lots of YAC for 6 type.' Besides that and his abundant stats - just look at TD responsibility - in Mercer's offense, he called most of the plays at the line based on the defensive alignment and then made the right decisions almost every play in a wide variety of zone read, power read, and 'old-school' options that made them the #2 rushing offense in the FCS. Something that 'informs' about his decision-making is that when Mercer's other Rice Candidate, Peyton Usher, RB, went out for (essentially) the season, the next guy stepped in and gained MORE YPC. Both fantastic players, but the fact that Russ was letting them 'have the ball' at the right times had a whole lot to do with their success. Think BeastMode / "Putting the team on my back doe" - He did it every week! Without Russ, Mercer is probably 6-6...at best...instead of 10-2. Not just about running and decision-making either - check his yards/completion, TD's/Attempt, and passing efficiency stats. Completion % isn't the best, but his TE is a converted HS Center and his #2 WR is a converted QB...they are and will be great players, but, frankly, Russ had a few more than his share of completions dropped this year while those guys learned their positions.

"Tagged' him when he was a HS Junior as a player I would love to have on 'my team' while watching a film swap from the team we (HS Team I help Coach) were playing the week after he wrecked them. Did the same thing to them his Sr year and I was elated when I saw Mercer had picked him up. Now I get to watch him every week! BTW - I coached against Taylor Heinicke (2012 Payton Award Winner) 3x when he was in HS. Amazing player....and a better passer than Russ, no doubt. That said, and no disrespect to Heinicke, but I'd take Russ over him all day because I want a QB with QB skills, but who plays the position with the mentality and toughness of an OLman. John Russ does that every play, every week!
