CONWAY - After winning its sixth Big South Championship and earning its fourth NCAA playoff berth in 11 years of having a football program, Coastal Carolina learned Sunday afternoon through ESPNU’s selection show that the ninth-seeded Chanticleers will host #12-ranked Bethune-Cookman (10-2) to play in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Championship. Game time at Brooks Stadium is set for 1 pm on Nov. 30.
Coastal defeated defending MEAC co-champion Bethune-Cookman last season in Daytona Beach, Fla., 24-14, in the first round for the Chanticleers’ first NCAA playoff win.
Coastal Carolina (10-2) has been ranked among the top 10 in the nation over the past eight weeks and had wins over three conference co-champions, including MEAC co-champion South Carolina State, SoCon co-champion and league automatic bid recipient Furman and Big South co-champion Liberty.
Bethune-Cookman, co-champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, is making its fifth appearance to the FCS playoffs in school history.
Coastal Carolina earned the Big South’s first playoff berth, an at-large selection, in 2006, falling to top seed Appalachian State in the first round. In 2010, Coastal received the Big South’s first automatic bid and fell to Western Illinois in the first round. Last season after defeating Bethune-Cookman in the NCAa first round, the Chanticleers fell 63-25 in the second round to third-ranked Old Dominion.
