I still like Kay Hanley and Letters to Cleo. So I'm old.

And Kay likes preps.

Just reminds me that one's perception of "old" varies quite a bit. Yours to me qualifies as whippersnapper.I'm from the Marliyn,Kim,Sophia,Brigitte era. But they are all worth the memories,

Those guys are very 60s Pard-looking. Citdog's Lix Phair pic is hotter, though.

My confession - I was a moderator on a Liz Phair discussion board for more than ten years. The board has kind of faded away, though, just like Liz.

Interesting tidbit about The Cyrkle, the guys who recorded Red Rubber Ball. I knew that they started out as a frat band at Lafayette (just as Guster started out as a frat band at Tufts), and that Paul Simon wrote Red Rubber Ball and gave it to the Cyrkle when The Cyrkle was opening for Simon and Garfunkel. What I didn't know (until now) was this - apparently John Lennon provided the unique spelling of the band's name, which is a reference to the circular roundabout located in downtown Easton. I guess those guys got around.

a reference to the circular roundabout located in downtown Easton.

Curiously, however, Easton refers to it not as a "circle" but as a "square."

Actually, it is a square surrounded by a circle. The original court house stood where the fountain is, now, and you will see the outline of the 'square'. Red Bubber Ball was on one of my 'track' songs I sang to my self during our quarter mile sets during track practice. I picked out songs that had a beat to help with the pace. On another, "Lafayette" connection, my wife, for Father's Day, gives me the biography, "Scalia: A Court of One", writtne by a Lafayetter prof named Allen. She said she hesitated when she read the back jacket about the author, but thought I could handle it, since Scalia is not one of my favorites, though he makes for an interesting story. Been away a bit with some pots boiling. Glad I could help with the thread.

Just for citdog - The monument in the center of the square/circle/circle/square commemorates the Civil War soldiers of Northampton County.

A tall shaft topped with a figure of a soldier blowing a bugle, with four soldiers, representing the four branches of military service, installed on pedestals around the stepped lower base. The soldier on top wears a cap and long coat and lifts the bugle with his proper right hand. The soldier on the north side of the base wears a cap and short cape and holds his rifle vertically with his proper left hand. The soldier on the west side has a sheathed sword at his side on proper left and a sword in his proper right arm resting by his foot. The sailor on the south side holds binoculars to his eyes with his proper right hand, with his proper left arm bent at the waist. The soldier on the east side has his proper right leg resting on a cannon. Cannon balls ring the base behind the figures. On the shaft are relief carvings of crossed flagstaffs, crossed rifles and a wreath, a marine anchor with rope and a wreath, and crossed swords and a wreath. The monument is surrounded by a brick and concrete fountain basin.

Reads as the Palmetto and Pine Network will be getting some iron ore added.

Impact online: probably nil. Sinclair is a broadcast syndicator. It has stations in none of the PL markets, but does have reach out of Harrisburg and Syracuse.

"Sinclair's broadcast stations will either be carrying the games and original content as part of the primary program line-up (generally on the Company's CW and MyNet affiliates) or as part of second channels (sub-channels of the primary station's signal), complimented by access and distribution on digital platforms."

It's those "sub-channels" that will become critical - you have to know how to get them. For those who have not used television antennas for a while (or perhaps ever) you should know that most over-the-air digital broadcast channels now are "multiplexed" into several sub-channels. In Philadelphia. for example, the ABC network affiliate is "Channel 6." In the over-the-air digital broadcast scheme, "Channel 6" actually consists of three sub-channels: Channel 6-1 (the "prime" channel consisting of all the ABC network programming), Channel 6-2 (non-ABC syndicated programming in HD) and Channel 6-3 (the same as Channel 6-2 but in 4:3 standard definition). Some stations broadcast as many as five different sub-channels. Most stations have reserved at least four sub-channels even if they currently use only one or two.1

Cable and Satellite systems typically carry an over-the-air broadcast network affiliate's "prime" channel but not necessarily its sub-channels. That's where having an antenna comes in - most of these Sinclair games will be broadcast only on over-the-air digital sub-channels. They'll be broadcast in perfectly good high definition, but they won't be on cable or satellite. I'm sure that Sinclair eventually will start bickering with Comcast and the like to carry the sub-channels (claiming that Sinclair is providing a "critical public service" locally by broadcasting the games, so the cable system "must" include the sub-channels in its basic packages under FCC rules). But for now it looks like most of the broadcasts will be antenna-only.

A lot of people have been tethered to cable for so long they don't know that these free, high-definition, antenna-only sub-channel broadcasts even exist. But if these Sinclair games are going to be broadcast (at least initially) on digital sub-channels, you'd better spend the nineteen bucks and get your Monoprice antenna (http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=109&cp_id=10901&cs_id=1090102&p_id=4730&seq=1&format=2) now.

1Some of you *might* be interested in knowing that the numerical "brand identity" of a local television station - i.e., "Channel 6" or "Fox 5" or "CBS 2" no longer bears any relationship whatsoever to its former VHF/UHF analog broadcast frequency. They're now called "virtual frequencies." Then again, some of you *might* not care less so I won't get into a dissertation over it - but I could. xrolleyesx

Holy crap!! Thanks Bogie. Never heard of sub channels. This deal not yet relevant to me in NYC,may however apply to us in Fla.

WFMZ-69 in Allentown actually has the best sub-channel programming of all the stations that I get. One Channel 69 sub-channel is nothing but 24/7 live traffic cams and weather for the Lehigh Valley. Sub-channels afford the station the luxury of being able to do that. There's nothing to prevent one of the Lehigh Valley stations from dedicating an available sub-channel solely to Lehigh Valley's High School, DIII and DI sports teams.

"Arbitration driven." Indeed.

Not only will this not end well, I don't think it will begin well either. I'm thinking this guy is going to flip his "exclusive broadcast rights" into a right to not broadcast at all, and to prevent others from doing so. He'll then leverage that position against anyone he deems susceptible of such leverage, for whatever fruits that leverage might bear.

This will make the FiOS debacle look like a friendly game of cards. I hope Carolyn Femovich is all lawyered up for the long haul here because this won't be pretty, IMHO. Again just my opinion, but I'd rather the league not be associated with these folks. It could cause some damage.

“Cowards die many times before their deaths;

Seeing that death, a necessary end,
Will come when it will come.”

RICHMOND JOINS PL in women's golf.

They coulda been in the Big South. xnodx

EDIT - wait a second. The CAA has women's golf, does it not? One would think . . .

EDIT REDUX - It looks like the CAA kicked them out. "[A]fter conference realignment the CAA determined it no longer needed associate members in women’s golf."

http://www.richmondspiders.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=26800&ATCLID=209577650

So I guess we were their safety conference. This is kinda like when we unceremoniously dumped Villanova from women's lacrosse. But I will say this - it's the first FCS sports press release I've seen in a while where no one is "extremely excited" about something. "We're kinda bummed that the CAA threw us out - in women's golf for chrissake - and that the Big South wouldn't have us. It sucks to have to go slumming like this but we have a golf team and it needs opponents. The Patriot League exists, and it seems to pay its bills on time, so it'll do."

What may seem like a small change in the jerseys to many of the readers of this fine thread is actually a pretty huge deal. First, just the cost of one set of new jerseys, not to mention a home/away combo is steep. Then, when you think about the fact that the Leopards had been wearing the same exact jerseys for at least 8 years and the technology has changed drastically over that same time period. The old jerseys were stretched out, loose fitting, and worn out. These new jerseys are top of the line Nike products that are tight fitting (hopefully reducing some of those blatant holding misses we saw last season), classic, and cool (don't underestimate how far new jerseys go with a room full of 18 y.o. potential players).

It's been done in the past but it wouldn't be my choice for #150. I suspect there will be a lot of people watching the teams for the first time. I'd rather them see traditional maroon jerseys with white pants for the Leopards and white jerseys with gold pants for the Engineers. No fancy color combos and definitely not Lafayette's horrible "none more black" scheme.

I'd speculate that everyone will have a #150 patch on their jersey or on their helmet.

Bagnoli: "[W]e are looking toward the Pioneer (Football) League, but in doing that there’s an expensive trip involved and you have to kind of weigh chartering a plane for $100,000 (against whether) you are better off playing Lafayette and Lehigh in our area . . . ." (Reminder - this is Bagnoli's final season).

Hey Bogie, whose the new tight end in your avatar??

I made it from an Enoch Bolles painting called, "The Goal Rush Is On!" Bolles did the painting for the cover of the November 1934 edition of Film Fun magazine.

http://i60.tinypic.com/2qmkvaa.jpg

BTW the original oil-on-canvas sold at auction in 2012 for $56,250. You might enjoy some of Bolles' other magazine cover art from the era. You can just google "Enoch Bolles." xcoolx

Micro-trivia: Nineteen Thirty-Four also was the last time Lafayette played at Yankee Stadium.

It felt like fall!! Damn most of the day high of 55 with completely overcast sky and a period of rain between 11-11:30 AM as I was doing the final miles into Hamilton. There were actually TREES (not just some leaves on trees) that were changing color up there. Saxby's at the Barge coming along well. Doing some reframing and the new service counter will be framed out this week. New furniture and lighting already ordered. Judy is excited (she will be the manager). Stopped at Woodstock festivities on my way back in Bethel, NY. Hadn't been there in 20 years and a lot has changed.

Here's another Enoch Bolles "pin-up" cover. Just for fun I'm in the process of redoing the background on this to make it "All-Patriot League." This one is from the November 1930 cover of Film Fun.

Alberto Vargas is the more famous pin-up artist, but Bolles was the first.

You may have a lot of work to do. Other than Army and Navy, I don't see any PL teams there.

It's a excuse to test my amateur skills by digitally rendering a whole set of "classic" PL pennants and layering them in. I might throw in Princeton, Rutgers and Penn . . . and even sneak a Swarthmore in the back there somewhere.

The idea came about because I happened to see a cartoon of that noted Rutgers alumnus (Class of '28), Mr. Magoo. During Quincy Magoo's (presumably) four years at Rutgers, Lafayette outscored the Scarlet Knights 144-0.

Fair 'nough Mr. Leotard. I'm sure the Spotted Pussies will appreciate your efforts and you will be recognized by The Moron Club with their special Tampon Award at halftime so there will be "Laughteryette" in Yankee Stadium, while the Marching '97 plays "Let it Bleed"...(;-)

I used a textured background layer, then a layer with the school color with the alpha channel backed off to ~180 for some transparency. Next I feathered the edges of the pennant to remove the sharpness. Then I added some "noise" (i.e. random pixels within the color range). Next I used a "vignette" tool set to a very broad radius; that gives it the shadowing. Finally, I used an oil paint tool to loosen the sharp edges around the letters and around the "noise" pixels. Everything was done using the PaintDotNet program.

Boston U.

"Metropolitan College" is too long to fit on a pennant.

Also American U. used to play Loyola in football, but I wasn't thinking of adding them, either. xrolleyesx

I'm not sure. I actually had that image earlier and I tried to crop out the "Colgate" script without success. For my "project" I'm going to try to locate a font that mimics it for use on the Colgate pennant.

I found a pretty good Lehigh font, though - I made a quick "beta" version to use as a base. Needs a lot of work and adjustment and scaling but I think it will be OK.

Trust me, I'm a complete and total hack. I found a free raster editing program called "PaintDotNet (http://www.getpaint.net/)" and started fooling around with it a couple of seasons ago - in order to try to make a "Frankosaurus" for the Lafayette board. Now I just fiddle with it just for fun.

Anyone who wants to try their hand at it should download the program. It's free and really easy to use. There's also a Mac OS X version of the program called "Pinta (http://pinta-project.com/)" for those of you who do their computing on the dark side.

If you want a more serious program, download "Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/)." It's also free (and open source) but it's much more complicated and it's rather resource-intensive . . . make sure you have a fast processor and tons of RAM on your computer. Gimp will do just about anything that Photoshop will do.

Lots to love in terms of potentially local, bus-trip FBS matchups, and if Georgetown were to ever get on board, add Maryland, Navy, Rutgers, and maybe Wake Forest in there as well.

Sprinkle in some CAA and Ivy, Monmouth, and some NEC teams. Not too shabby.

It was my first time. To walk down to the bridge and look up was eery. To see the positions of the various forces first hand was priceless. I also found it amazing that the park still allows local farmers to rent the cornfield space, and that the cornfields are roughly where they were during the time of the battle.

Was a great teaching moment for my kids too - explaining why so many Americans had to fight and kill each other is never easy to do.

A loyalist woman wrote of the Confederates as they marched through Maryland: "I asked myself in amazement, were these dirty, lank, ugly specimens of humanity the men that had driven back again and again our splendid legions with their fine discipline, their martial show and colour? I felt humiliated at the thought that this horde of ragamuffins could set our grand army of the Union at defiance. Oh! They are so dirty!I don't think the Potomac River could wash them clean!" A Maryland boy said much the same: "They were the dirtiest men I ever saw, a most ragged, lean and hungry set of wolves." But he could not help adding: "Yet there was dash about them that the northern men lacked. They rode like circus riders. Many of them were from the far South and spoke a dialect I could scarcely understand. They were profane beyond belief and talked incessantly."They were dirty, but their rifles were clean and their cartridge boxes full. They were shoeless, ragged, half-starved, ill, but still tough, smart fighters. Alfred Waud, a war artist from HARPER'S WEEKLY, was in the custody of Jeb Stuart's cavalry troopers for a short time, and described them as homely in dress but well-equipped, carrying carbines "mostly captured from our own cavalry, for whom they expressed utter contempt."

Not with UNH game next week.

Im interested to see how Lehigh does against JMU. I think UNH beats Lehigh by at least two scores this year, especially at home and looking for revenge from last years debacle. Although, I was expecting a two score win last year too...

IF Lehigh can beat JMU, the UNH game may be close. If Lehigh goes to New Hampshire 0-1, it will get ugly. Starting the season 1-1 would be a positive,as 0-2 is what many expect.

I don't know if the two are really that related. UNH is off this week so they have plenty of time to come up with a payback plan....

Guess you are saying we will get spanked at New Hampshire no matter what. A little confidence goes a long way. Just look at last season. If Lehigh loses against CCSU, they probably lose at Monmouth also. and the season gets out of hand.xdrunkyx

The good news is that we didnt put a date on this thread, so we are just waiting for the next one. Looks like the next time Lafayette plays at new Hampshire we wont even have to start a new thread!

Coen's teams, in general, have played well after losses. JMU and UNH present the toughest two week stretch of the season. Given the youth and new staff pieces, memories should be short relatively speaking. If nothing else, this could be a 2010 type year where the team takes its lumps against two good teams (neither UNH or JMU are as good as that 'Nova team) early in the season and improve each week moving forward....

Lehigh has the horses to be good this year but there's a lot more variables this season compared to the previous 3....

Expect OOC realistically to be 3-2 or 2-3. In the midst of that we have Fordham. Resilience will be an absolute necessity for us this year. Other than GU no cakewalks. Survive and improve!

Pards are kind of like that... SHU and WM two weeks later. Then the Fordham game, Harvard two weeks later. So, we have a big game every two weeks until HC right after Harvard. Either way Laf and Lehigh will be plenty tested by November.

:) If we handle it like Pards did last year then yeah. We are not in quite as good position as you were with all the changes in staff and new players. Light a few candles,I guess, and watch the roller coaster this year.xdrunkyx

Last season was supposed to be a down year. New QB,3 starters on D back,O line a work in progress. Its very easy to say that Coens teams play well after a loss, because its been since 2009 when they started 0-4 that they have back to back loses. If this team does what the 2010 did,we will all be happy with that RING.

In this context, Tavani did well by scheduling us a bye the week before #150.

Lafayette is now 0-2 since the Lehigh game. Robert Morris looked good in their loss. What about 0-3? Then 0-4 against W&M? And Lehigh will be 0-2 since the Lafayette game after next week. Just sadxpeacex

Just of note -

Dartmouth, not UNH

Bryant, not Brown

Harvard, not BC or Holy Cross

UConn, not Yale

Syracuse, not Army

And of course, Georgetown, not . . . umm . . . anyone that isn't Georgetown

EDIT: ought we expect a protest from the Lehigh camp? xrolleyesx

I imagine that Holy Cross has more fans than UMass, Sader87. Cross certainly is more relevant, IMHO.

Massachusetts is a weird state (badoom pish) in a lot of ways....college football-wise, BC has historically dominated EMass, Holy Cross CMass and UMass WMass....I'm not saying the Johnnies don't have their fans but there is no way they have more fans in the Greater Boston region than BC does.

Holy Cross and Harvard play opponents that are meaningful to people in Massachusetts. BC does as well but on a different level. In the MAC, UMass plays teams that no one in Massachusetts or New England has any reason to know or care about.

As a Jersey guy, I strongly question their methodology...the most popular team for each state, by default, had to come from that particular state. There's no way in hell that Rutgers is more popular than Notre Dame or Penn State in NJ...

EDIT: - Bill, you can soften the impact by editing your AGS preferences so that you show 20 posts per page, instead of 10 posts per page. By doing that I get only 100 pages of Lafayette at New Hampshire useless drivel instead of 200 pages of Lafayette at New Hampshire useless drivel. Works for me. xcoolx

Massachusetts and Rhode Island are very weird in this study.....New Hampshire too....BC has always been the de facto Massachusetts school college football-wise, post WW2 anyway....I really don't get Bryant at all....both Brown and URI have a much bigger Providence-media presence than does Bryant......Dartmouth in New Hampshire would make sense until the late 1970s/early 1980s or so,,,,but their following dropped off dramatically when the Ivy League went 1-AA.

Princeton actually has a solid fan base in NJ going back to the Palmer Stadium days. It was always an attractive day trip, though only now for games such as Harvard, Yale and Pennsylvania.

Well, Middlebury averaged 2,229 per game last season, which is better than *some* FCS schools . . .

. . . ahem . . . Sacred Heart, St. Francis, Robert Morris, Delaware State, Georgetown, Jacksonville, Marist, Valparaiso, Wagner . . .
