And appropriately enough, we're on top! (;-)

'ngineer - I believe that I have located almost enough cross-street signs across the county (thanks google earth street view!) to cover a full set of individual AGS game week avatars for the upcoming season. Assuming, of course, that the AGS daemon lets me continue to clog its server capacity with constantly changing avatars . . . xrolleyesx

I know that our new Prez is very much pro-football and pro-athletics in general.

And you know that exactly how? I don't, and I've been following it pretty closely. Here's the way it works - we'll actually "know" something about her positions in around 5 years. All I know about her so far is that she is personable, a good speaker, and shows every sign of having a good mind. Beyond that - pro-athletics, pro-Greek, expansionist, trend setter, tool of the faculty, or serial killer - I have no idea. And neither do you.

Oh yeah, congrats on creating the 1,500th post of this thread. Seinfeld's show about absolutely nothing cannot top this.

It's comforting to imagine that somebody else in West Fargo might value this level of insight.

We're slowing down so you're probably looking at late June or July.

Bogie, by he way, has posts 500 and 1,500 to his credit. The lad has been busy.

It has become a survival tool. As much as any other, we will all be stopping by during the doldrums.

I know that our new Prez is very much pro-football and pro-athletics in general. I'm not certain (yet) about her fraternity stance. I do know that Middlebury College (her previous haunt) outlawed fraternities in the early 1990s.

Not a good sign. However, I do know one of the alumni officers of Chi Phi met with her recently, and he came away with the distinct feeling Byerson had an appreciation for the history of the Greeks at LC and that, if done properly, fraternities and sororities can provide significant educational and leadership opportunities that do not exist in the classroom. I think the BOT meeting of May could be significant.

Colgate certainly watered down its own fraternity system, essentially by forcing the fraternities to sell their houses to Colgate.

You have too much time on your hands . . .

I just checked. It appears to be more of a combination of day-old laser toner and hand-rail smudge (of questionable origin) from downtown Trenton, rather than time. It's just that the former tends to make for a somewhat disappointing AGS graphic.

Yup 1964, I was there Class of 65.
Bogie, I tried to post pic but when I clicked on Insert Image icon, the screen got very light and froze. ??

Pretty standard stuff for the PL Engineering/Liberal Arts colleges. Creative industrial design has been a hallmark for ages. I like it.

Any truth to the rumors that the PL is inviting schools as Associate Members for this Division I sport? Scholarships to be given, of course. Gotta take care of those gender equity issues.

Probably could be today, except HC has shown zero inclination to do so.

The PL lineup will be different in 2020, but I don't see where or why Villanova would be interested.

I see some of the 'Pard faithful are predicting 9-2/11-0 this year. Do they not realize they were 5-6 last year? They've had one, ONE, 9 win season in the last 74 years, 1981. Temple has more....xlolx

Conversely, Lehigh has averaged 7.6, yup lets round that to 8, wins a year for the last 25 seasons. That feat has been accomplished with 4 different head coaches and countless assistants....

I check out the 'Nova board like you do. Some, not the trolls, are starting to warm-up to the idea it appears. Talley leaving, which is much sooner than later now, will be the difference imo.

I sure hope so, of all the potential new FB members, Nova is the one I would most like to see join.

citdog,
Not sure playoffs in PL will ever be an option. As last year showed the difference in the level of OOC scheduling can lead to seemingly anomolous results in conference. Last yr LC had a challenging OOC while LU a weak pne. True enuf that LU had to play game with a frosh 3rd string QB. but the plain truth was that Pards not as bad as their recordnor LU as good as theirs. The real solution ,at least as far as LU is concerned,is to get better.

Lehigh got their money's worth in their defeats last year. Bucknell, after 15 years, and Lafayette after 5, got their licks in for sure. Still, an 8-3 season with wins over Princeton and UNH is nothing to apologize for.

A rumor is circulating amongst certain veteran Lafayette players who were told that they have been placed beneath some new scholarship players in the spring prospectus two-deep. And I quote - "Coach Tavani stunned the surgeons who were preparing him for his recent cardiothoracic procedure. Upon the initial incision the surgical team discovered that Coach T., in fact, has no heart."

Just a poorly conceptualized, morbid joke, of course. Stay well, Coach T.! xthumbsupx

When the Pards traveled to Durham for the playoffs last season, UNH was "unable to accommodate" us with a practice time at their facility. Hmm . . . .

Instead the entire Lafayette football program stopped in Worcester on the way up to New Hampshire and they practiced at Holy Cross. Needless to say our true friend and PL brother Crusaders are welcome in Easton at any time should even a remotely similar circumstance arise. The doors are open, they key is under the mat if you get here late, and we'll leave the light on and keep the beer cold for you.

Little things like that help define the cohesiveness of a conference and its members. I daresay that even Lehigh would do us that favor, if the need arose, and we would do the same.

UNH in no way said that the lovable leopards couldn't practice at beautiful Cowell stadium, they just couldn't practice when Frank wanted to. Its a long bus trip, but even Frank can't expect a coach to change his team's home practice schedule for a playoff game because the opposition requests to use the same time. But alas we would never hear those words come out of the corner office. Instead it is much more, "I can't believe they would do that to us" and "How disrespectful". And in true Tavani form rather than agree to the suggested practice time made available by the UNH staff he decided to call on his good friend Gilmore to practice elsewhere, where and when he dictated.

This surprises me... not one iota. :)

It's worked wonders before on other Lafayette NCAA playoff road trips, like Delaware (Leopards were one 4th quarter drive away from pulling the trigger) and App State (which STILL should have been a Lafayette victory - successful onsides kick with the lead flagged for a mythical offsides played a huge part in App's comeback).

UNH had better watch out for similar tactics from Tavani this time around.... :)

Exactly! The UNH Stadium doesn't have lights and there is only one practice field with field turf that has lights. And IIRC Lafayette drove up on Friday morning which would have required a very late afternoon or evening practice time. Maybe Travani really wanted an afternoon practice but didn't want to start the trek on Thursday and stay in route? Then they could have been in Durham in time for an early afternoon practice. FWIW, I know when UNH went to Lehigh this past season, they left Durham on Thursday night, stayed overnight in route, because that allowed a normal Friday routine.

The Charleston and Savannah Railroad was essential to the defense of both places. Less than 7500 Confederate Soldiers and Sailors defended both cities and the only advantage we had over the invader, besides GUTS and HEAVY guns in the correct places at the sea approaches to both cities, were the interior lines. When Savannah was threatened troops from Charleston rushed to their poorer sister cities defense via the railroad and vice versa.

Though I'd LOVE to lay claim to The Rivalry as being the first-ever game in the standardized rule era (defined arbitrarily here as 1884), the truth is too many other major colleges had already played that year to claim that:

Parke Davis was ten feet tall and stronger than two oxen. Or even twenty mules maybe. He invented the game all by himself and he decreed Lafayette vs. Lehigh to be the Alpha and Omega of all college football. He could play eleven-on-eleven, both ways, all by his lonesome. Parke Davis never allowed mere trivialities, such as "not being born yet," stand in his way of greatness. That's true dedication.

I daresay that Parke Davis carved Lehigh from Lafayette's rib so the Pards could have a companion; a team to keep them honest and to best on the field of glory when it mattered most. Lafayette - Lehigh is the first, the oldest and the original game and rivalry. It is written.

The trouble with defining "the first" college football game is that the rules were pretty much defined by the schools themselves. For example, Rutgers/Princeton is called by many as "the first" because it's the first time the rules deviated from the British "Association Rules" for football/rugby in some sort of American flavor, even though the game was very much a proto-college football that resembled soccer more than football as we know it today. Others call McGill/Harvard the first, since they played two games, one under "association" rules, and another under Canadian-style "rugby rules". It's that "rugby rules" version that more resembles today's game, with 11 men to a side, etc. Tufts, too, gets in on the game, claiming Harvard/Tufts was the first true game between two American schools.

You could make a very good argument that the games that were played weren't really standard until 1883, when the proto-Ivy League got together and finally agreed to a common set of rules as to what college football really is. Again, Yale/Wesleyan would then take the helm as the "first unified CFB rules" game on Sept. 26th, 1883. IMVHO that game has just as valid a basis as the "first-ever college football game" as the other two.

1883 is when Walter Camp determined scoring for touchdowns and kicks, while other of his innovations, like the line of scrimmage, the positions of halfback, quarterback and fullback, were adopted in prior years.

I may just write a blog post about it.

I'm importing this from the Lafayette Board because its just too damn funny and ironic, IMHO. I know that football and politics usually don't mix, but . . .

First Condoleezza Rice, the former Provost of Stanford University, was blocked from addressing graduates at Rutgers. And now it seems that Robert Birgeneau (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/14/education/in-season-of-protest-haverford-speaker-is-latest-to-bow-out.html?_r=0), the former Chancellor of Cal-Berkeley, has been blocked from addressing graduates at Haverford College.

When was the last time a Provost from Rutgers was invited to address anybody at Stanford about anything? And what do you think the odds are that (current Haverford and former Lafayette President) Dan "Waldo" Weiss ever would be asked . . . well, you get the picture. I mean, forget the politics of it all. It's just too friggin funny not to laugh about.

EDIT - I am reminded that (current Swarthmore and former Colgate President) Rebecca Chopp presided over the withdrawal of World Bank President Robert Zoellick (http://articles.philly.com/2013-04-09/news/38376527_1_robert-zoellick-rebecca-chopp-honorary-degree) from the Swatties' commencement last year. Dr. Chopp and Dr. Weiss are "peers," are they not? Both are awaiting that invitation to address the WB, though . . . xrolleyesx

One more thing before I shut up . . .

In a refreshing change of pace, Cal-Berkeley chose to honor a remarkably uncontroversial and non-political dignitary as its commencement speaker (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/206417-pelosi-tells-grads-be-disruptors) this afternoon. While I'm sure there might have been the odd student here or there who expressed displeasure with Berkeley's choice, it wasn't anything the administration couldn't handle.

As Dan Weiss awaits his turn to address the Berkeley grads, I think there's a lesson in here for all of us.

My favorite concept from that era is that the referees of the games were often from the schools participating in the contest. Lafayette-Penn games got pretty violent due to no-calls and questionable calls. No surprise... Penn was arrogant even 120 years ago...

One has to reason that the Penn-Pard rivalry has gone on so long, and has been played so many, many times, is because we've been pi$$ing them off like there's no tomorrow for a hundred and twenty years. It's Authentic Rivalry 101.

In the Penn-Pard series, it truly is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. xtroublex

I'm not convinced. The Quackers are a tough bunch to figure. They have, for instance, knocked traditional rival Lafayette (90 games) off the schedule. Chest thumping Pards will claim it's because Lafayette won 5 of the last 7. To me that's just so much homer nonsense. The only evidence of Penn's intentions we have is the 2014 schedule, which only adds to the confusion. OOC games:

@ Jacksonville - Should be a non-competitive walk over for the Quacks. I'm guessing it has been scheduled to enhance Florida recruiting.
Villanova - Should be a city rivalry fixture on the schedule if it isn't already. A probable loss.
Fordham - I guess they're not saying goodbye to the Patriot League after all. Also, a probable loss.

So, what do we "know?" Not much. They haven't scheduled pushovers and they haven't gone anti-Patriot. You will also note that two of the opponents are full scholarship so they are not objecting to that. I'm guessing, with only 3 OOCs allowed and 'nova apparently sucking up one of those spots on a permanent basis, they needed to dump a semi-permanent opponent to create scheduling flexibility. If Jacksonville and Fordham are more than a home and home I'd be surprised.

Jacksonville and San Diego are all about getting a free team trip to a warm-weather climate. "You could go to Lafayette to compete for the NCAAs, but we have a 3 day/2 night trip to San Diego in the fall! Do you like girls in bikinis? Are you likely to get that travelling to Fargo or Pittsburgh in September?"

We disagree yet again. A trip to Southern California or Florida may momentarily catch the attention of a recruit from Illinois or Missouri, but the coaching staff is all about getting some of that prime Florida football beef to a game in their back yard.

I somewhat believe that Penn stopped scheduling us because they can't beat us regularly. They still schedule Villanova but that is an attendance bonanza, relatively speaking. The Lafayette game usually brings in a healthy amount though, more than Jacksonville ever would.

It's complete BS they are not scheduling us because of scholarships. Fordham is any easier? Bagnoli is gone after 2014 and there is a new AD in the house, so maybe Bruce's overtures will be listened to by Penn. I would like to see them on the schedule.

And it's not like Penn has not disappeared before... we didn't play them for about 12 years in the 60s-70s, when we were really bad.

carney2

I somewhat believe that Penn stopped scheduling us because they can't beat us regularly.

Perhaps not a completely off base comment. Word is that Bagnoli has a wins clause written into his contract - and the Pards were ceasing to be an automatic "W." (Imagine that, an athletic department that actually cares about winning. Are you listening, Bruce McCutcheon?) Penn's problem was that they had the talent advantage to win this game almost every year, but it was always their opener. Lafayette, on the other hand, was playing its second or even third game. That's a huge advantage for the Pards and they were taking advantage of it. While I still believe that my "scheduling flexibility" argument trumps everything in this analysis, getting an automatic win on day one (Jacksonville) while dumping a team that is getting evermore problematical due to the advent of scholarships, may have entered into the thinking.

What would a "wins clause" read like? Winning season overall in 3 of 4 years? Winning IL schedule in 3 of 4? Win IL minimum once every 4 years? Something like that? Given Bagnoli's tenure what would be the penalty for not meeting the wins clause?

Also I'm not certain that Bagnoli (or any IL coach) had complete control over OOC scheduling. Isn't that an AD function?

YOU ALL owe your freedom to BAD OLD SOUTH CAROLINA.

http://www.live5news.com/story/25598482/state-museum-exhibit-explains-scs-importance-in-revolutionary-war

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -The South Carolina State Museum recognizes the state's crucial role in the American Revolutionary War with an exhibit running through August.
"South Carolina was the most prosperous colony, one of the crown jewels of Great Britain's colonial empire," said Museum Curator of History JoAnn Zeise. She says the state was pivotal to the American Revolution politically, economically and socially.
"Proportion-wise, the amount of South Carolinians who died in battle during the Revolution were the same as during the Civil War," she said. "The number was smaller, but the proportion was the same, so it affected everyone in South Carolina. Without South Carolina's political support, America would not have been successful in the war."
More battles were fought in South Carolina than any other state.

I had posted several years ago that Lembo had told me that Bagnoli had a clause in his contract that gave him an increasing bonus with a winning season, with increments as the wins went up from 6-7-8, etc. That was 10 years ago, so don't know if it still exists.

In defense of Dan Weiss, I saw him at every home game - with his family. But it would be unthinkable of a Lafayette president not to attend football. Even Rothkopf went to the games.

I had to post that pic just to remind everyone that it's really all in good fun. And with #150 fast approaching, that L&L know how to do "rivalry" like nobody's business. In fact I'm pretty sure we invented it. I suspect we're all going to be especially cruel towards one another this season . . . but it's only because we love to hate you guys, and vice-versa.

The First Lady was kind enough to allow me a fifth of fine Single Malt for the (early) weekend. So, in a rare confession - we need you guys. There. I said it. Now let there be war.

As a high peaks Adirondacker weaned on Utica Club, we called them "Uncle Charlies." Still do, in fact. Couple o' Charlies with a nice beef n' weck is a standard fishing lunch, ya know.

An example from my youth, in the precise vernacular: "G'win ta camp, ya sah? Brin' som Chucks, o'f ya would, eh? Dollars' mine. Pikes' er biti'n n' da cove fer sure, 'round da hens n' chickens, double deep, at da mornin' calm. None da' small mouth. Quiet now . . . scull low an' don't tip da guide boot. You'll catch a drink."

After all these years I can't give you dates and times, but I do recall seeing Artie in Fisher during games. He was doing more schmoozing than spectating, but he was there. In defense of your comment, P4L, I don't believe he was a frequent flyer. It was pretty much Lehigh games and homecomings. I'm guessing that if the BoT was on campus and likely to be in attendance he would join them.

The Beef n' Weck tradition traveled eastward from Buffalo, above the Canal, roughly to the Eastern Divide. You'll find one, for example, in Old Forge but not necessarily in Warrensburg. The city's eponymous wings have traveled much farther.

Is that Sub, Grinder, or Hoagie territory?

A Sub or a Bomber. Hero is almost never heard and a Hoagie sounds (to them) like a derogatory term for some sort of foreigner. Grinder is New England which also is considered a foreign nation.

For an authentic North Woods culinary experience, try the Raquette Lake Hotel and Tap Room:

http://bobsafetypage.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/.pond/p5280025.jpg.w560h420.jpg

The official slogan of the Tap Room is, "Have You Had Your Utica Club Today?" Seriously.

Bogus Megapardus
June 10th, 2014, 11:54 AM
The beer at the Tap Room and the perishables in the adjacent General Store (including the bait) are kept cold all year exclusively by use of ice harvested from the lake during the winter and stored in the basement. The huge ice store is the foundation for a unique refrigeration system. It also provides some air conditioning.

I'm not joking. That's why the Utica Club tastes better there, you see.

Roast beef on weck. Weck is a rye roll w caraway seeds,IIR. May be from Buffalo but popular anywhere upstate NY and Glendale.Queens, my local German neighborhood.

Yep. The "weck" or kummelweck roll is covered in caraway seeds and with very coarse salt (like on a big pretzel). Many Wegman's markets (in N.J. and in the Lafayette Valley) bake fresh kummelweck rolls, BTW.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uc54PcuN10U/US0S1d99YxI/AAAAAAAAE8Y/6gn54ODebZc/s320/kimmelweck+rolls.jpg

The roast beef has to be hot and freshly sliced, and you dip the top of the sliced Weck roll in the juice from the sliced beef (never in gravy or canned bouillon broth). It should be topped with horseradish or the horseradish can be served on the side. It should also include a German/Polish authentic dill pickle (can be sliced but need not be) and the sandwich must be consumed with local beer, particularly Labatt's, Genesee, Carling Black Label or Utica Club (this includes all children age 8 and above, or who are trusted to drive the boat when others are too drunk, whichever is younger).

This sandwich never has cheese of any kind on it and it never includes "french fries." If, perchance, it does, then obviously you're a leaf peeper from outside the blue line. It may, however include a side of Hinerwadel's salt potatoes - but only if boiled properly by knowledgeable purveyors.

Trivia - The "Buffalo Wild Wings" franchise chain started life in Buffalo as "Wild Wings and Weck." In Buffalo, the restaurant still is known as "BW3" or "B-dubs."

Your unseemly suggestion to the contrary defies both history and uniformly recognized sociological data. So please, don't even go there. xsmhx
