The Flames forced four turnovers and scored on seven of their first 10 drives, rolling to a convincing, conference-clinching 56-14 victory over No. 18/16 Charleston Southern, Saturday afternoon, at Buccaneer Field. The victory, Liberty's fifth in a row, pushes the Flames record to 8-4 on the season and to 4-1 in the Big South. Liberty shares the conference title with No. 11/7 Coastal Carolina, who finished up conference play last week with a 46-13 victory over Presbyterian College.
The win also marks Liberty's second victory over a Top 25 program under head coach Turner Gill and the second-highest ranked team Liberty has beaten on the road in program history. Liberty claims its sixth Big South title in the last seven years, tying Coastal Carolina for the most titles in conference history. During the last seven years, Liberty has posted a 34-5 Big South record.
Charleston Southern drops its second game in a row and finishes its regular season with 10-3 record and 3-2 mark in Big South play. The Buccaneers, who saw their eight-game home winning streak come to an end, committed 14 penalties for 87 penalty yards and had four turnovers during the game.
