Stumbled across an article about the NCAA's realignment into Divisions I, II, and III. What I found interesting was that in December of 1973 there were 126 schools that elected to play Division I hoops and Division I football. 111 schools had elected to play Division I hoops and Division II football, competing for the Division II playoffs. 52 schools would play Division I hoops and not sponsor football.
Funny to me because today the numbers breakdown is very similar between the number of bowl subdivision schools and championship subdivision. Nearly doubled the number of non-football Division I schools.
