Sacred Heart and Duquesne clinched shares of the Northeast Conference crown in Week 12 with the former nabbing the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs. NEC Defensive Player of the Week Gordon Hill was impressive against both the run and the pass in Sacred Heart’s title-clinching win at Robert Morris. Meanwhile, NEC Offensive Player of the Week Gianni Carter’s 66-yard touchdown reception put Duquesne ahead for good as the Dukes closed out the league slate with a win over Central Connecticut. Sacred Heart quarterback RJ Noel picked up yet another NEC Rookie of the Week honor. The redshirt freshman signal caller, who owns a 10-2 record as a starter, was responsible for 260 yards and four touchdowns in the 42-25 triumph over RMU. The NEC Special Teams Player of the Week award belongs to Wagner punter AJ Firestone. Accounting for the best single-game punting average (44.6) in the NEC this season, Firestone played a key role in Wagner’s 10-7 win over Saint Francis. The result of the Wagner-Saint Francis game allowed Sacred Heart to secure the FCS playoff bid.
