Enough talk about the YSU game. Over and done. Now on to USD.

Last regular season home game and the senior's last regular season home game.

USD has been a surprise this year IMO. After last year's train wreck, Joe Glenn has improved the Coyote team with their first 3 conference wins coming this year. USD has had some close losses this year that has taken them out of playoff contention. YSU and Montana were games that they could have won but didn't make the plays when they needed to.

USD has a stud LB in Tyler Starr. He is the real deal and NDSU will need to account for him on every play. USD's defense has been playing better this year and will need to bring their A-game to have a chance against the Bison. On offense they replaced their QB with 2nd stringer Kevin Earl and he has done some good things for the Coyotes. Sounds like their two RBs are banged up so it will be interesting to see if they play on Saturday.

I'm guessing the Yotes fans may be a bit quiet this week. I'm expecting a comfortable win by NDSU as I think the team will approach this as any other game even though it doesn't have a whole lot of bearing on the playoff picture or conference race. It'll be bittersweet to see all those great seniors playing in their last regular season home game but at least we get to see them for another game or three in the Fargodome in the playoffs.

USD is not at the same level as NDSU right now. Both lines for the Bison should dominate this team.

If the Bison do not make silly mistakes, like they have been doing the last few games, this game will never be in doubt.

A couple points:

1. The title of this thread is #1 NDSU vs. University of South Dakota! You don't have to read and comment on it! Let me repeat- you don't have to read it!

2. The game has yet to be played. USD is a much improved team. Playoff seating as well as a historic undefeated regular season record for NDSU are to be determined by the outcome of this game.

I think it' s not your place to determine what is worthy of discussion for the fans of two other schools. There are lots of other threads on this board you can participate in. Why don't you go find one?

I never posted a thread about any of our games unless they were important to our conference... like UCA's game vs. McNeese (I'm not sure I even posted one for that) . You can count those TV threads as "news" threads... heck even the mods learned that right URSUS??! I was actually hoping they would move them to the "news" category of this site so they wouldn't be on this page.
I only comment on threads when a) they are ridiculous like the chattamawoccs (sp?) are we laughing thread or b) threads about teams that give them a classless impression. Hey, I'm proud of the Bison. To win your FBS game, be nationally ranked in the FBS, win 2 championships and most likely a 3rd... that's impressive! But please don't create threads like, "we're playing a 4 win team and we're undefeated". Give us fans that aren't aware of a possible rivalry a reason to care about that game. Is there a rivalry? Have the S.D. fans been so bad to NDSU fans over the years? Is there a trophy involved that makes this game noteworthy? Did the S.D. coach talk about the NDSU coach's mother? What? Apart from the possibility of an upset that even that really has ZERO ramifications of NDSU winning a national championship, why should fans of other schools WANT to know about a serious mismatch??

Do you really think any regular UCA fans that post on here had anything to do with those single threads? Those were Broadcasting college students who posted and made videos from their TV production dept. I never posted a thread about any of our games unless they were important to our conference... like UCA's game vs. McNeese (I'm not sure I even posted one for that) . You can count those TV threads as "news" threads... heck even the mods learned that right URSUS??! I was actually hoping they would move them to the "news" category of this site so they wouldn't be on this page.
I only comment on threads when a) they are ridiculous like the chattamawoccs (sp?) are we laughing thread or b) threads about teams that give them a classless impression. Hey, I'm proud of the Bison. To win your FBS game, be nationally ranked in the FBS, win 2 championships and most likely a 3rd... that's impressive! But please don't create threads like, "we're playing a 4 win team and we're undefeated". Give us fans that aren't aware of a possible rivalry a reason to care about that game. Is there a rivalry? Have the S.D. fans been so bad to NDSU fans over the years? Is there a trophy involved that makes this game noteworthy? Did the S.D. coach talk about the NDSU coach's mother? What? Apart from the possibility of an upset that even that really has ZERO ramifications of NDSU winning a national championship, why should fans of other schools WANT to know about a serious mismatch??

I was pessimistic heading into the UNI game and that was a pleasant surprise. I realize UNI is not NDSU, but winning in Cedar Falls has proven difficult for most Valley teams over the years. At this stage of USD's development, it was a good win.
Just like against SDSU last Saturday, not having a viable RB available will hurt USD and force USD to throw more times than what Glenn would want. Not saying I would expect USD to run wild against the Bison, but at least forcing your defense to play the run as an option would be helpful.

Kevin Earl will be a good QB and has been making progress. He had an off day against SDSU with some frustrating overthrows to wide open receivers behind their deepest defender. The pressure up the middle by SDSU was a big part of that. The pick six he threw came from him throwing short from getting hit, the receiver was six yards past the DB that made the int on a stop and go route - looked like a likely TD if Earl had not been pressured.

I think the NDSU defensive front will get even more pressure on Earl than SDSU did - unless the USD OL plays better than I have seen. USD does have some guys that can get open and catch the ball in traffic.

The strength and balance of the Bison offense I think will cause problems for USD. I will be disappointed if you roll over USD like last year, but I have a feeling 35-48 points is not out of the question.

If I had to guess, I would say Bison win 41-17.

I am hoping for a game like your game against Indiana St last year. Get a few turnovers USD's way with a score on defense. USDs defense and OL will determine how close this one is, IMO.

Seems like they should and the confusion would let another guy get thru the line. IMO, they should line him up away from our AA- OT Billy Turner cus he will be a non-factor if they do.

They try and line up Starr in multiple spots but still within the normal framework of the 3-4 base defense.
I have enjoyed watching Billy Turner since he was a Freshman. That kid came in as a freshman ready to play at a high level (rare for a MVFC level team). What an incredible recruiting miss by the BCS schools.
I have actually been thinking about this match up a lot. Will your staff have enough confidence in Turner to plan on single blocking Starr? Two seasons ago Starr spent a lot of time practicing against Tom Comprton (LT - drafted late by the Redskins and currently top backup at both LT and RT.). Compton struggled consistently blocking Starr one-on-one. That same year (Starr's sophomore year) USD had a game against Wisconsin. They started the first series single blocking Starr and he promptly sacked Russell Wilson from the blind side and a tackle on Monte Ball. Three and out for Wisconsin the first series. They came out the rest of the game and doubled him and I don't think he got a sniff of a ball-carrier the rest of the game.

At least this year Starr is complimented on defense with some teammates that can play. Iddings and Davis at DE have been much improved. Jacobs/Greer/Praska rotate at DT and have played way better this year with a year in the weight room.
Auston Johnson at middle backer has been very good. He is a JC transfer. A little short, but very quick and strong. He has seven sacks in MVFC play so far this year. You can tell he is a football player. His dad is in the CFL hall of fame as a LB.

Our DBs are inconsistent. They can make plays on the ball with their athleticism, but really have benefited from a strong pass rush. They have not been able to find an answer stopping the skinny-post route the past three games. Has really torched USD on third down.

Starr has continued to physically develop and is about 15 lbs heavier than his sophomore year and noticibly stronger. Should be a good match up between Turner and him.

I just hope Glenn can rally the guys one more time and play hard. They have been playing as hard as I have seen a Coyote team play the last four games. Just too many mistakes to get over the hump.

IMO, the Bison coaching staff will let BT go at him by himself but if he starts getting beat they will give him some help. It will be a fun match-up to watch on Saturday.

USD has made improvements and if they keep making them they will be a top tier team in the future.

Another player I should have mentioned is #33 - true sophomore - OLB - Keyen Lage. He has been fantastic this year. Has an INT in each of the past two games. He also hit Zenner hard enough to force a fumble late in the game last week. As you know - Zenner is not the type of guy to fumble easily.

Lage is a really good player.


It will be fun to watch him when NDSU hits the edge when they run. There will be a FB or a pulling guard to block him. Bonet and Grothman are very good blocking FBs and Gimmestad/Johnson the pulling guards that just crush people.

Fortunately the officiating wasn't critical to the outcome, but it's been awhile since I've seen a team score eight touchdowns and only get credit for six. That was pretty bad "reffin" that was on display.

That being said, the USD defense had no answers for much that NDSU brought to the table in the first three quarters when the game mattered. Starr from USD is a talented LB, but doesn't have the help around him to mask other deficiencies of his teammates. Coyote offense has some potential, but they couldn't hit the big play at all today.

Interesting stat- teams coached by me and teams coached by Joe Glenn have scored the same amount of points against NDSU the last two years. Zero. Of course, Joe has gotten the best of a few other NDSU teams over the years. They've made progress for sure at USD.

#33 was one guy was watching since he was mentioned on here. He is good. Bonet crushed him on a few blocks also.

Billy Turner did a good job on Starr when he went against him. You could see Starr trying to use his speed to get around Billy but BT would just push him past Brock.

Missouri Valley refs have been horribly inconsistent all year.

USD has made improvements. The Bison are just head and shoulders above everyone in the Valley this year.
