Heads were likely to roll after the Yankees were eliminated from the postseason by the Tigers, but the opening odds were on Alex Rodriguez going first, not Joe Torre.

According to the New York Daily News, however, the popular Yankees manager will be fired unless he decides to resign first to save face. Sources told the newspaper that former Yankees player and manager Lou Piniella will be owner George Steinbrenner's choice to replace Torre.

If the Boss fires Torre then he truly is a moron. The Yankees problems are not Joe Torre. The problem, much like the Raiders, is a schmuck owner who thinks he still knows what it takes to win. Overpaying over-the-hill players will not produce championships. They've tried it now for 5 years and it hasn't worked and it blew up in the Lakers faces when they tried it. The Yanks need to get rid of everyone but Jeter, Posada, Mussina, Rivera, and Giambi. A-Rod might be worth keeping if he would be willing to take a salary cut. I know he's the sacrificial lamb but things would be a little better if he was making, say $12M a year. I hate the Yankees because of Stienbrenners greed. They were actually a likeable team when they had O'Neil, Brocious, Tino and that crew. They were scrappy players who just wanted to win. Now they suffer from the curse of the dollar and i find it humerous.

We've known for awhile that Steinbrenner is a jerk and idiot. He is like a spoiled child. Funny how the success that the Yankees have currently had started in 1996, the year that Torre was hired. Most experts feel like Torre did his BEST managing job this year with this Yankee team that had tons of injuries, poor starting pitching, poor middle relief etc. Would you rather play for a guy like Torre, or a powderkeg like Piniella. Remember how Piniella turned things around with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays? Guess George forgot about that.

And can we stop the ridiculous hammering on A Rod? Just because someone was stupid enough to throw all of that money at him is no reason to slam a very good player. I know 29 other teams that would take A Rod in a heartbeat. Hey, send him to Los Angeles. My Dodgers could use a third baseman. By the way, there will be a whole bunch of Yankee players making more money than A Rod next year. The problem with the Yankees is pitching. They have a bunch of aging, over-paid starters (Mussina, Johnson et. al) and haven't signed decent middle relievers. They have done nothing to build their farm system. Outside of Wang and maybe Rivera, their pitching is truly a mess. Detroit had a bunch of young arms to throw at the Yankees and that's why they won. I thought going in that New York was the worst of the four teams in the AL playoffs. That's what $200 Million bought. I also think it's funny that the New York Mets are probably going to the World Series, while Georgie gets to sit home and watch. Maybe they can invite Steinbrenner to come and throw out the first ball for game three at Shea Stadium? The Yankees are not going to win anything in October anytime soon, until they step up and rebuild their creaky farm system. They need to find some youngsters like they did with Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Williams and Cano. Do that and you don't have to spend all of that money on over-the-hill veterans. The teams poised to win in the next few years are the teams that are focusing on home-grown talent, like the Dodgers, the Tigers, the Twins and the Diamondbacks. Add the Marlins to that mix, if they ever get rid of Jeffrey Loria as a meddling owner (Steinbrenner without the same cash).

If Steinbernner fires Joe Torre, he will officially have lost his mind. The Cubs were decimated by injuries all season, and they fell apart. The Yankees had injuries and were in the playoffs. Granted, the Cubs didn't have the talent that the Yankees had this season, but this is the time that a manager pulls the team together and keeps them playing well. The Yankees did that, and they got beat by pitching. Keep the manager and find some young pitchers.

Whatever Georgie does I hope it is to the detriment of the Yankees - just despise them!

If Steinbrenner fires Torre, it will be his biggest mistake since letting Reggie Jackson go in 1982. It took the Yankees 14 years to get back to the play-offs.

If there's one thing yankee haters can despise, it's that their own teams will never ever ever be successful enough to perceive first-round elimination after a string of 9 straight division titles as a "collapse."

I'd give anything to see the O's or the Nats "collapse" like that. Maybe Torre gets fired, moves to DC, and we can get a taste of what it's like to "collapse" like the Yankees.

If Torre winds up someplace else, I'll pull for that team like nobody's business come the playoffs.

I seem to remember ESPN reporting that Joe Torre had been fired after last season, also. If Steinbrenner fires him, then he's pretty much an idiot, but I really can't believe it's going to happen until it does.

Yeah, but our own teams don't have a license to print money like King George does. And all that money spent has bought him 17 more playoff victories than the Diamondbacks have since 2001. Money well spent, wouldn't you say? Works out to what, about $100 million/playoff victory?

Yeah, Torre stays, but can he pitch? All this talk about who's going to coach them when that is probably about the most insignificant reason why the Yanks are $1.2B in the hole without a ring - they have no pitching outside of Wang and Rivera. Thankfully for the rest of the baseball world, that doesn't appear to have any signs of being addressed (and it's pretty big to solve in just one off-season) anytime soon. xsmileyclapx

There'll be plenty of suitors for his services, and suitors with money. The Yanks will need to spend quite a bit (which they will) to get him, which means they'll be less likely to get the other help they need - he's one starting pitcher and right now that would give them two (Wang) - everyone else is a liability. And they still have bullpen issues outside of Rivera, again assuming he's still Rivera next year - one year soon you won't be able to say that.

Zito is either Bronx or Boston bound.
