On their biggest stage, the Charleston Southern Buccaneers turned in their best performance. CSU rolled up 323 yards rushing and shutdown the nation's No. 1 offense for a half to defeat No. 3 Coastal Carolina, 31-26, before a record crowd on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
The victory sets a number of records, including wins in a season as the Bucs move to 10-1. CSU moves to 3-0 in Big South play and remains the lone unbeaten in Conference play. Coastal Carolina falls from the ranks of the unbeaten to 9-1 and 3-1 in League action. The VMI Keydets took full advantage of five turnovers and 13 penalties by the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, and led wire to wire in a 27-9 Keydet win in Big South football action Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The victory came in VMI's final Big South football game, prior to next year's jump to the Southern Conference.
The Keydets (2-8, 1-4 Big South) jumped ahead on the first Gardner-Webb (5-5, 0-3) drive of the game, when the visitors had the ball at their own nine-yard line. A botched snap went into the endzone, and Weston Reber fell on the loose ball for a VMI touchdown and a 7-0 Keydet lead. The Flames scored four of their five touchdowns on the ground and rushed for 231 yards en route to a 35-14 victory over Presbyterian College, Saturday afternoon, at Williams Stadium. The victory, Liberty's third in a row, ups the Flames' overall record to 6-4 and 3-1 in Big South play. The loss, PC's second-consecutive setback, drops the Blue Hose to 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in League play.
The win also keeps the Flames in the hunt for their sixth Big South title in the last seven years. For PC, Heys McMath completed 20-of-28 pass for 153 yards with one interception and one touchdown.
