Charleston Southern running back Christian Reyes became the program's first 1,000-yard rusher and the Buccaneer defense shutout Presbyterian in the fourth quarter of a tight game as CSU beat PC, 27-16, on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Memorial Stadium. The Buccaneers pick up their ninth win of the season to match the school record and move to 2-0 in Big South play. CSU is now 9-1 on the year and equals the 2006 squad, which went 9-2, for wins in a season. PC falls to 3-5 and 1-1 in the Big South on the year. Liberty's defense made its presence known again and nearly posted its second-consecutive shutout, guiding the Flames to a 17-7 victory over visiting VMI, Saturday afternoon, at Williams Stadium. After blanking out Gardner-Webb last week, 24-0, Liberty came within seconds of posting back-to-back shutouts for the first time in program history. However, the visitors got on the scoreboard with an acrobatic touchdown catch from Samuel Patterson with 97 seconds left to prevent the shutout. With the victory, Liberty ups its record to 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in Big South play. Walter Payton Award candidate Lorenzo Taliaferro, who reached another milestone Saturday, and redshirt freshman De'Angelo Henderson each ran for more than 100 yards to lead #3/6 Coastal Carolina to a 50-25 Homecoming win over Charlotte Saturday at Brooks Stadium.
Henderson actually broke the barrier first and finished with 117 yards and a score, while Taliaferro powered his way to 139 yards and three scores. With his three rushing touchdowns, Taliaferro ties the Big South single-season record, now with 21 -- matching the mark set by Stony Brook's Miguel Maysonet last season. Taliaferro, who now has a school-record seven 100-yard rushing games this season -- additionally has 22 total scores this season, one shy of Maysonet's Big South record.
Defensively, Coastal held its opponent to a touchdown or less in the second half for the sixth time this season. Gardner-Webb rushed for a season-high 301 yards and scored 37 unanswered points to rout Warner (Fla.) University Saturday afternoon in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium. The Runnin’ Bulldogs (5-4) snapped a three-game losing streak in the process, rumbling for 28 first downs and averaging a healthy 7.9 yards per play for the game.
Kenny Cook caught scoring passes of 25 and 52 yards in the first half, and finished with eight catches for a career-high 179 yards – helping Gardner-Webb to a season-high 570 yards on 72 plays. Lucas Beatty overcame two early interceptions to pass for 231 yards and two scores, topping the 5,000-yard mark for his career in the process. Juanne Blount carried 18 times for 98 yards and a score, and freshman Rod Talley came off the bench to rush for 107 yards on just nine carries – including a 60-yard burst for a touchdown in the third quarter.
