CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Charleston Southern running back Christian Reyes (Rouge River, Ore.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Liberty’s Defensive Line has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the ninth week of the regular-season. Coastal Carolina kickoff returner Devin Brown (Charleston, S.C.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Charleston Southern running back Mike Holloway (Atlanta, Ga.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Reyes rushed for a career-high 181 yards on 26 carries to lead the Buccaneers past Charlotte, 36-14. He averaged 7.0 yards per rush and had eight carries go for at least 10 yards. Reyes collected nine of CSU’s 19 rushing first downs and his rushing total was the most in a game for the Buccaneers since 2005. His rushing effort was responsible for sustaining three of CSU’s four touchdown drives, and he became the Bucs’ single-season rushing leader in the process.
Liberty’s defensive front combined for 17 tackles (8 solo, 11 assisted), five of the team’s six sacks and 12.5 of the squad’s 14.0 tackles-for-loss in the Flames’ 24-0 shutout of Gardner-Webb. Five different defensive linemen factored into the group’s five sacks, while six accounted for the unit’s 12.5 TFL. Jibrille Fewell led the defensive line with five tackles and 2.0 TFL, while Toby Onyechi had a team-high 1.5 sacks against the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The defensive line limited GWU to 30 net rushing yards and 230 yards of offense.
Brown, making his second start at kickoff returner, returned four kickoffs for 140 yards (35.0 average) against VMI, including a 95-yarder for a touchdown. Following a VMI field goal that made the score 38-27 midway through the third quarter, Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a score -- the longest scoring play in Coastal history.
Holloway rushed 10 times for 81 yards and his first career touchdown in the Bucs’ win over Charlotte. He had a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Holloway had four carries go for at least 10 yards and rushed for three first downs.
