It’s just another day at the office for this year’s edition of the Eagle-Griz football showdown in Missoula.
For the 12th time in the last 18 years, No. 3 Eastern Washington and No. 10 Montana will both enter their key Big Sky Conference matchup ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. Kickoff Saturday (Oct. 26) at Washington-Grizzly Stadium is 12:40 p.m. Pacific time in a game regionally televised by ROOT Sports.
Collectively, the two teams have won a trio of NCAA Division I football titles, and have made 30 total appearances in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs. Eastern won the national title in 2010, and have been to the playoffs in 1985, 1992, 1997, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. The Grizzlies have been to the playoffs a FCS record 21 times, with national titles in 1995 and 2001. Montana did not qualify for the playoffs a year ago and had a streak of 17-straight berths snapped in 2010.
Needless to say, this week’s game has plenty of championship and postseason implications. Both teams have been nationally-ranked in the last five meetings, but only once – 2009 – have both teams advanced to the playoffs. And in none of those years did the EWU-UM loser win a share of the Big Sky title.
“We definitely will be gearing up to play an incredibly talented Montana football team in Missoula,” said Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin, who was an EWU assistant the last time EWU won in Missoula in 2005 (34-20). “Obviously, it is a tough place to play, but we love going to Missoula.”
In last year’s 32-26 Eastern home win, the No. 7 Eagles scored two touchdowns in the final 2:19 to pull out the win over 21st-ranked Montana. The two scores, aided by a successful onside kick, came within 1:26 of each other.
Following last week’s 34-10 home win over Southern Utah, Eastern is currently tied atop the Big Sky standings at 3-0 with Montana State, and EWU is 5-2 overall. The Grizzlies are 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference after edging Cal Poly at home in overtime, 21-14.
The Grizzlies have won 88 percent of their games at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, which was opened in 1986. Montana is 175-24 there (not including four vacated wins in 2011). Eastern has won four of the 12 meetings there, with victories in 2005, 1997, 1992 and 1990.
“It’s very difficult to play in Missoula – their crowd does a great job and their players feed off of it,” said Baldwin. “Their team has a lot of pride to play at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. You have to be able to handle certain things on the road in terms of your snap count and the emotion of what the place feels like. We’ve had some tough losses in Missoula, but we love going in there and competing.”

Did I stutter? If Vernon Adams goes down or has a bad day, what does that leave you? Adams has as many yards rushing as your leading RB and accounts for 72% of your total offensive output.

the key to this game will be Montana's pass rush. If they can get pressure on Adams without losing contain they will win. EWU's run blocking is alot better than their pass blocking and their running back is the real deal. The run game is just overshadowed by Adams.

Seems like most of these predictions are fueled by animosity toward EWU. Based on the season so far, and particularly the UM/NAU and UM/CP games, it's hard for me to see why EWU wouldn't be the favorite in this game. Very happy to be wrong, of course.

This isn't meant as a knock on SHSU, but if their D was able to stop EWWW last month, then the Griz, Bobcats, and a number of other FCS schools will be able to shut them down too.

Agreed. Our D is pretty mediocre this year too. Though MSU's D has been far from impressive when I've seen them play.

Biggest question mark in this game is how our secondary will handle their passing attack. They do look to be much improved from last year, so if we can prevent them from completing as many big pass plays as they did in the second half last year, then I like our chances of putting up a lot of points on their D at home.

With how spotty UM's usually solid OL has been, in addition to JJ's accuracy issues, count on Graham to have TJ Lee and Ronald Baines to lock up UM's average WRs in man coverage and send the house at JJ. Both TJ and Baines were spectacular in one on one with Tevin McDonald roaming over the top last week (yes, I know UM's offense is better than SUU's).
EWU wins, 34-20.

They've only been spotty against two very fast, very aggressive defenses. To my knowledge Eastern's D doesn't really fit either of those criteria.
Oh, and average WRs? Henderson leads the conference in TD receptions. Our corps as a whole just don't put up gaudy numbers because we have a much more balanced attack than EWU.

Very hard to guess how this game will end up. Playing in front of an amped up sell out home crowd will help Montana but it won't win the game for them. Eastern Washington's offense can be a scoring machine and the QB Adams is a threat on every play. Yet Montana's defense is capable of limiting the overall EWU production and Adam's big plays. I suspect the Griz defense holds Eastern well under their average score. That is if the UM defense isn't spending all day on the field. So I think the real key is on the other side of the ball.
Montana's offense has been up & down this year and now the injury to half of starting RB rotation won't help. We'll certainly need another RB to step up and add to Canada's production to keep a balanced attack. When they're in sync this Griz offense is also a machine but it hasn't shown up every week. So if the Griz offense is sputtering it will be a crap shoot how this game comes out. Regardless, I'm confident the game won't be as high scoring as some believe, nor will it be a 9-10 outcome either. Bottom line, IF the Griz offense is "on" this week, Montana will win by two scores. As a long time fan who knows virtually everything (just feel free to ask), and a certified Homer, I command that to be the outcome! Should be a classic game. Go Griz.

Your knowledge needs some updating. Our D is very fast. We haven't been aggressive on the whole this year, more read and react, but the last few weeks DC Graham has opened the throttle a bit and starting playing more man and blitzing the QB, producing some very positive results.
Also, the Griz are more balanced? The HELL you say?
Griz have 183 pass attempts, to 288 rush attempts.
EWU has 228 pass attempts, to 260 rush attempts.
We're not struggling with the run either, averaging a healthy 4.7 ypc... we just get a lot more out of our passing game in yards per completion than the Griz do.
Lastly, Henderson does not lead the conference in rec TDs... that would be EWU's Cooper Kupp with 9. xcoffeex

3rd down and redzone should be huge in this game, like always with two great teams.
EWU converts on 50.6% of them, best in the BSC by a good margin. Griz convert on 45.6, which is second in the BSC.
On defense, EWU allows only 36.7% conversion, UM allows 41%. Considering EWU's played a much tougher schedule, specifically in terms of offenses faced (Oregon State, Toledo, SHSU) than the Griz (NAU? CP?), I'd say that disparity is fairly significant.
As for RZ %...
On offense, EWU is #2 (88%) and UM is #8 (77.4%). On defense, the Griz are #1 (57.9%), EWU is #7 (80%).

I'm still not convinced UM is to where it was a couple years ago. WaGriz gives them a 14 point head start so I say its a pickem game. The noise will hurt EWU more than it would a running team and it will really hurt their ability to audible out of bad plays but I'm still leaning slightly towards EWU if only that this core team has been in some really big games the last 2 years. Yes UM as a school has been in as many big games as anybody in the country but these players haven't been in as many and more importantly haven't come out of them with many wins. I've got alot more respect for UM than EWU but this year I feel like the eagles will take it.

Well, that reading and acting on D has resulted in you being ranked 8th in the conf. in scoring D, 7th in total defense, 8th in rushing D, 7th in passing D and 8th in passing efficiency D. So you're basically middle of the pack as far as the conference is concerned.
I find it funny you use attempts to gauge balance, considering Montana avergaes 214 on the ground and 236 passing, wheras EWU gets 173 on the ground and 324 through the air. xeyebrowx
You're also incorrect on the TD receptions thing, as DeAndre Carter of Sac has 11.

You were wrong first. Bitch.
Griz are balanced output, but that's because they are clearly a run heavy team. EWU is very balanced offensively, but obviously will have a higher passing output since yards per catch are significantly greater than yards per carry, for 99.9999% of teams.

Also, I'd argue that our defense is average to subpar in the stats because of our significantly more difficult schedule. We've gone up against the #9 ranked scoring offense in FBS (#1 in passing), along with the 18th ranked rushing offense in FBS (Toledo). Add in SHSU, and there you go. In conference play, EWU has given up only 2 TDs and 43 points total, or 14.3 per game.

True but those games have also been against Weber State, UND, and Southern Utah. Not exactly an offensive juggernaut in those three. (Although Weber did just put up almost 500 yards against MSU)
I'd still say our defense is average to subpar...but with the potential to improve as the season goes forward.

We'll find out Saturday.
IMO, they do.
In those games you just mentioned, EWU gave up 46, 33, 49 points....not worthy of being classified as a good defense.
Ya, we'll see Saturday.

EWU has the worst D of any D1 team the Kats have faced this year. That's for sure.
SHSU could have easily scored two more times in 4th but took the foot off the pedal.

Grizz have a better defense. I'll take the better defensive team.
Grizz: 35-21
Typically these games are very close. This year shouldn't be any different. Considering Eastern's dynamic offense, it is likely they will jump out to the early lead. Then I suspect Montana's defense will clamp down and limit them throughout the second half. The Montana offense has the talent to put plenty of points on anyone. The question is if the Griz hot & cold offense is "on" this week. Even with some key injuries I am confident they'll have no problem getting up for this one. Expect the Grizzlies to notch the upset win over E. Washington. If you use this information to win big in Vegas be sure to send me 10%. If you use this information to lose big in Vegas you don't need to send anything.

I don't post here often, but this is a game that I am excited about. Obviously, EWU has a very high powered offense and if allowed to play their game, are capable of scoring a great deal of points on anybody. The Griz have a good running game and have the ability to sustain long and time consuming drives. It will be key for the Griz O to control the clock and keep Adam's on the sideline as much as possible. The Griz D needs to get to Adams, keep him contained, and not allow big plays. EWU has to stop the run and try to force UM to get their yards through the air, where they haven't been as successful. If Montana get's their run game going, I don't think EWU will be able to score enough points to win.
I actually think this game could go either way. The home field advantage is big and UM should have beat EWU last year with a weaker and JJ void team. I'll take the Griz by 10.

Adams is good, but not great. He got bailed out all day by his receivers. Not to say if we would have had a new D coordinator, we would have won, but I sure would have felt better. Guy is a doofus. If he didn't have the athleticism of the players to bail out his ineptitude, we would have been totally smoked in half our games.
So tired of the coaching carousel known as Montana. NDSU would be in the same boat if they were on their 3rd coach in 5 years.

I don't know what you are referring to exactly but I think you may be surprised which way I would bet on that one. I have little faith in our OC & DC. Horrendous playcalling although it seemed to improve tremendously in the 2nd quarter today.
Is EWU really the best the BSC has to offer right now? Our mediocre D didn't have many problems ending most of EWU's drives, especially in the second half. Their D was the worst I've seen this year except Houston Baptist in their first game ever. Right on par with Texas Southern, maybe even worse.

SHSU is a matchup problem for us and I'd rather play the Bizon. That being said, and despite being "stopped on every drive", we did manage to score 5 TD's that game.
Defenses CAN get better and I think ours is. We've played some very good offenses including Montana yesterday. We were able to hold them 46 yards in the decisive 3rd quarter before going into prevent (offensively AND defensively.
If we continue to improve on D, I think we have a chance against anyone.

Thats embarrassing to admit as the head coach but at the time I didnt think it was a bad decision. Down 11 you need a FG at some point why not get the what should have been the for sure 3 when you can? It was a kick that from (39 yards?) should be made, it just didnt happen. Yes, not that I disagree with the decision to kick but to not know the down and distance at that point of the game is just bad. Worst has been the best kicker and had the distance, just pushed the kick. He is a freshman and will get better.
The irony. xlolx

Adams is a gifted athlete, though Eastern WA's new receiving corp is what surprised me.
They were VERY impressive in that game making some great catches and getting fabulous yards after the catch (though some whiffed tackles in the secondary helped that).

Thats embarrassing to admit as the head coach but at the time I didnt think it was a bad decision. Down 11 you need a FG at some point why not get the what should have been the for sure 3 when you can? It was a kick that from (39 yards?) should be made, it just didnt happen. I thought it was the right call to kick.
That's what I was telling everyone. You're down by a TD + 2 PT + FG, it's 4th down, and you're in field goal range. No brainer.

I have to admit you were much tougher on D than I expected, especially up front. Griz could just not get anything going up the middle for most of the day. Of course it didn't help that our coaches refused to adjust when you stuffed us time after time.
I think the last two games are pretty telling. Something has gone horribly wrong with our run game

Agreed. The coaches don't seem as comfortable as they were with either the gameplan or some of the personnel with what our plan of attack should be. I'm not sure what it is really but it's definitely off.

This sounds about right coming from a kicker.
Got to go for it no matter what:)

Well I hate to side with kickers but even at the time when everyone was saying go for it I thought it was the right call to kick even though it should have been very possible to pick up the yard. Kick it, leave every second on the clock possible and then know, absolutely know that it's four down territory the rest of the way.
We didn't win though so I certainly ain't saying it was right but at the time seemed most logical and safest way to extend the game.

That guy extends, like those pills you bought off of tv, plays when he should be sacked and then makes you pay. Cooper Kupp should be the Rice award winner. EWU is a good football team.

Easily. The guy is already better than Kaufman, Edwards, or Herd xeekx
How the hell did he slip through the cracks and fall to EWU?
Henderson is a beast too. They need to both get a shout out from TSN

Ursus, I believe you are most definitely correct, just giving bohcat a tough time.
Always easy to look back and say something was a bad choice, not easy to make the decision in real time

His favorite color is red. Seriously, he is fairly local, so that may have had something to do with it. He was the scout team play of the year for EWU. It's great to see him translate that to the team in the live games.

Haven't seen the stats between the two, but Kupp has video game numbers. And that's with Adams spreading the ball around to 4 or 5 different receivers on a consistent basis.

Adams is good, but not great. He got bailed out all day by his receivers.
Sounds pretty familiar.
"The only reason you guys won was "Kaufman"....er, Jones, I mean Kupp...or Meyer, or Kimble.
Adams makes some mistakes at times, but he is a Sophomore and is still learning. He has a nice touch on the ball and can manipulate the pocket and scramble when he needs to. And yes, he has some very good receivers.
What was more telling to me was how the EWU front 7 really limited Montana's running game. Outside of the big plays from EWU's offense, that was the biggest difference IMO. By the time Montana adjusted its game plan to start throwing, it was too late.

That is becoming a trend. Montana, supposedly, has an NFL offensive line, yet can't run block to save their lives....

Don't know enough about Xs and Os to say for sure, but I think it must have something to do with a poor blocking scheme or the guys just not being adjusted to the new offensive scheme. They seemed to do a great job run blocking last season. xconfusedx

I think Red & Black hit on the key point I've been seeing since the NAU game. We just don't seem to be recognizing that when another team is committing more personnel to stopping one aspect we need to commit to the area they are subtracting from to do so. EWU was very quick to the area when we did exploit and so forth but we did find some cracks but let some opportunities slip away and they just capitalized on our mismatches all day long. They just flat out did a good job all around and we paid for it. In some games we seem real comfortable in what we're doing but in the losses we've looked like we were lost and couldn't find our way out at all or until too late to fix things.
Vernon is good but he got away with some serious jump balls that could have went either way is I think what SeaGriz was fgetting at. Cooper definitely bailed him out a couple of times but that is what teammates do to make a great play.

Definite jump balls and a lot of them. After watching the game again on DVR and the video I shot we should have had 3 more INTs if our safeties didnt suck so bad. They missed them all by a half step and the WRs bailed out at least 5 bad passes that were into double or triple coverage. They made the plays but it isnt quality or good football its luck, it will run out and they will get housed when MSU comes to town and in the playoffs.

Hope you're right Alpha. I think the Cat's DB's are much better and we are getting healthier as the year goes on. If Preston Gale is close to 100% by next week we can get pressure on VA with our front four and drop 7 into coverage. Our linebackers can all cover and run as well, especially Cole Moore. We'll make it tougher on VA than the Griz did, I think.
The Cats will also throw it around alot more on 1st and 2nd down early in the game, while still controlling the clock. DMac has been getting better and more confident with each outing since the injury, and will bring the added running threat on called QB keepers.
I'm looking ahead, but this should be a h-ll of a game and will come down to TO's like it has almost every time these teams have met in the past 5 years.
