With the help of one of the best players in the history of the division, a team creates a dynasty winning multiple national championships in as many years. Five years removed from their last national championship, they get rid of their coach on a year where that coach had just made the playoffs and lost in the first round. Some of the teams fans and outsiders think the firing is outrageous and call for the AD's head. Some think it was a good thing and tell critics of the firing that they just don't understand all of the discipline problems on the team. Some cite the poor handling of a situation regarding the son of an accomplished coach who was pretty much dead weight on the staff. Following the firing of this coach, the team that was 8-4 the previous year has a disastrous losing season that frustrates all of the fans.
With every one of these details, it isn't clear what program you are talking about. The similarities are uncanny, aren't they?

Except one team hired a coach that was a real douche canoe and the other team didn't, so it's obvious which team is which.

Sewak was fired too soon. Jerry Moore really needed to make a graceful retirement.
Sewak's replacement created an offense which kept the ball out of Jayson Foster's hands. No one on the App State staff is that stupid.

My take is that GSU pulled a quick trigger on Sewak. It almost had the taste of an impulse move. What exacerbated the problem is that GSU's administration had no foggy idea who to replace him with. That was probably the greater sin.
App's problem was not so much the coaching staff, but missing out on key targets along both lines several years ago. All of that three star talent at the specialists positions are quite useless when the defense is playing in the backfield.

I watched a good bit of App versus Montana and I think I can say there's no way their OL is any worse than what we had in 2009. That year I believe we gave up more sacks than any other FCS team. It was so bad that by mid season our only passing plays we could really run were the bubble screen and the swing pass. And this was with a receiver corps of true freshmen that were not as good as the receivers App has this year. That team managed 5 wins even though our scoring offense was under 20 points.
