Coastal Carolina erased a 19-point, third-quarter deficit, thanks to four touchdowns by Lorenzo Taliaferro, to force overtime. Then, in the second extra period, CCU senior LaDarius Hawthorne blocked a field goal to give the #4/6 Chanticleers a 55-52 double-overtime victory over the Flames at Williams Stadium. Coastal improves to 7-0, 2-0 in the Big South and Liberty falls to 3-4, 0-1. The win was just Coastal's second in Lynchburg and first since a 27-21 triple-overtime win in 2005. Also, Coastal snapped Liberty's 18-game home Conference winning streak, dating back to 2006.
Down eight with 4:23 to go in regulation, Coastal drove 75 yards in nine plays, ending with a 15-yard Alex Ross to Thomas Pauciello touchdown with 46 seconds left. Still down two, Ross connected with Bruce Mapp to tie game. During the drive, CCU was facing fourth-and-four before Ross kept the drive alive with a first down completion to Niccolo Mastromatteo. PRESBYTERIAN 49, VMI 35 | BOX SCORE (http://www.gobluehose.com/pdf9/2555845.pdf?ATCLID=209287531&SPSID=89737&SPID=10734&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=18100)
The Presbyterian College football team started off Big South Conference play with a bang on Saturday afternoon, defeating the visiting VMI Keydets, 49-35 at Bailey Memorial Stadium. PC improves to 2-4 overall and opens League action at 1-0. VMI falls to 1-6 on the year and 0-2 in the Big South. With the result, PC set a new program record for points in a Big South Conference game. The team’s 49 points eclipsed 45 points scored against Charleston Southern on November 19, 2011.
PC erased a 7-0 VMI lead early in the game with 14 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third en route to the victory. The game served as a coming out party for true freshman quarterback Heys McMath. In his collegiate debut on Saturday, McMath threw for 322 yards on a 21-for-33 effort with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The freshman’s yardage total ranks seventh in PC’s Division I history and falls nine yards shy of Brandon Miley’s 331-yard performance against Gardner-Webb in 2008 for most PC passing yards in a Big South game.
After being down by 21 points in the fourth quarter, VMI climbed with seven with just over a minute remaining but could not complete the comeback.
